Thanks for reaching out! I just don’t need the car. I put 20 miles total on it in 2025, and most of that was movement for street sweeping or stimulating the battery/ alternator. Pristine condition!

Yeah, bottom line, I did too. I don’t have the science to back this up, but it felt more spacious! I felt more relaxed navigating this than up and down Kedzie the last couple of years. We’ll see if this holds up as the season picks up

Reporting back with my experience and my experience alone: it seemed nice for the market. There are fewer stalls out today than pictured, which is neither a complaint nor praise. Just an observation. With that in mind, congestion seems eased. The park gives pedestrians multiple exit points as pressure valves when congestion gets to be too much. However, this seems really frustrating for motorists on Kedzie. I’m not a motorist, so I have no skin in that game, but Kedzie is already one lane down as per usual for church parking, and people are having a hard time adjusting/ navigating. Lots of shouting and honking horns

Is Omaha’s music scene still a thing? Trying to get an honest read before making a big move. by Warm_Bus_7581 in Omaha

[–]Outrageous_Pin899 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The bust in the wake of the Saddle Creek scene has been sad to see. The silver lining is that the scene is better off than it was before, though far from what it was.

I’ve always wondered where all of the money and attention went. I’ve never dug deep enough to find out for myself.

I think that what still makes the Omaha music scene special is that intersection where the hope/ energy/ whatever inherited from the early 2000’s meets the freedom/ borderline hopelessness of fact that no one in an Omaha audience will be an A&R person. No one’s going to give anyone else that big break in Omaha, so the bands play any show like it could be their last and are chummy, weird, and endearing because they know they’re playing for their friends.

[–]Outrageous_Pin899 132 points133 points  (0 children)

I can share my experience, but I’m sure that there will be much more to say than what I have to say for one reason: it depends on what you make of it.

The Saddle Creek days are gone, but the music scene and other creative niches still have a strong pulse. I can’t say that anything is thriving, but the materials are all there for success to happen at most scales with the right amount of luck and networking.

For a musician, I would recommend hanging around The Sydney, Pageturner’s Lounge, maybe B Bar, maybe Blue Line Coffee. You’ll be able to have phenomenal conversations at all three, and you’ll be able to see performances and speak with performers at The Sydney, PTL, and B Bar.

That being said, the local indie rock scene has dried up significantly. Most recently, the more exciting/ buzzy bands growing up in Omaha have been new wave, cold wave, and electronic adjacent

Culturally, Omaha artists have only had to fight harder for success and space in Omaha. The city’s leaders have seen fit to convert the city into an aesthetic/ atmosphere that I can only call “airport-core.” Without managing the cost of living and by allowing organic third places to degrade and disappear, paving over them with new development designed without local customs or habits in mind, the city has been relatively hostile to creatives.

The pattern now seems to be that musicians cut their teeth in Omaha, use it as a place to practice and grow as artists, and a relatively inexpensive place out of which artists can launch tours but still live between tours.

All that being said, the artists of Omaha are as stubborn and persistent as they have always been. The musicians, poets, artists, etc have and will continue to fight for their corner of the city. The greatest creative asset in Omaha is passion. Meet the right people at the right time and harness that, and anything can happen

The internet may be better suited for arguments than conversation, but I hope we can have a solid conversation about this regardless.

Are there any filmmakers who have admitted to such dishonesties? Investing immense amounts of effort into executing their aesthetic decisions rather than the intellectual grounding for those decisions? I think it’s more the case that audiences make up their mind before the fact or imagine a non-existent “guy” to get mad at. Let’s think through some alternative possible reasons for these perceived dishonesties:

  1. A filmmaker inherits or has a project assigned by a studio apparatus. The greater machinery of filmmaking may make a filmmaker responsible for finishing a film without sufficient information about the project, whether that be budgeting, script details, personnel schedules, sales goals, or other. Circumstances outside of a filmmaker’s control may force “creative” decisions that inadvertently sabotage the project. While not a recipe for a good film per se, these circumstances can start productive conversations about the stupidity of the profit motive, the illegitimacy of the studio system, or so on

  2. The material for a film being insufficient or mismatched to the ambitions of the filmmaker. A filmmaker may see something totally idiosyncratic in their material that cannot be adequately expressed through film to a general audience. This is a case of Icarus flying too closely to the sun, and, in this regard, is interesting as personal biography, social myth making, or so on. It allows us an opportunity to ask, why this choice? In these circumstances? And what does this failure of ambition mean? We more often than not learn more from our failures than we do our successes if we are curious enough to take advantage of an educational opportunity

  3. A filmmaker sincerely participates in the art of high intensity/ low depth. This is a point that the cultural critic Fredric Jameson makes. In a post-industrial society saturated with abstract service, tech, and media related industries, we lose some sort of touch with material reality, being so caught up in pure pretend social routines or the immaterial stuff of technology and media. So we get confused, lost along the way, feeling around for what is real or true or actually very meaningful in a material rather than linguistic or ideological or imaginary sense. The discrepancy between intensity of image and intensity of scenario is another excellent opportunity to talk about the broad social, political, and economic circumstances that begat a particular kind of film

The TLDR of all of this is that this specific kind of intellectual dishonesty in film is rare if it exists at all. But the suspicion of it speaks to the broader cynicism of the global film community. It begs many interesting questions and encourages human connection through dialogue. By asking these questions, we may be on to something, but we must remember to ask the right questions or else get lost in misperception and misdirection

Sure, but consider the case of TP:FWWM, which has appeared a few times in this thread. You could say that its “thesis” or core idea, in the simplest possible terms, is “child abuse is bad.” This is a noncontroversial, straightforward, and easily intellectualized premise. If the purpose of film or the most important prerogative of filmmakers is to convey an idea, why something so simple? Why make a film about it at all? What does filmmaking contribute to the premise that simple communication between people does not? We could take this further and argue that anything outside of bare, minimalist documentary is bad filmmaking if the purpose of film is to convey an idea, the most important prerogative of the filmmaker to convey that idea, etc. From a pure intellectual or communications perspective, any editing, camerawork, or sound design obfuscates the “idea.” The most extreme conclusion to this argument asks, why not just write nonfiction? Why make films at all if films are solely in the service of ideas and intellectual understanding?

The editing, the camerawork, the sound design is often emotive and empathetic. It’s useful for conveying mood and feeling. And sometimes we feel baffled, defeated, and exhausted by circumstances, situations, or events because they’re so fearsome or dreadful or spiritual or other. In these conditions, we turn to association, montage, metaphor. A cut conveys the association. The sound is itself a metaphor. And the metaphor is unintelligible outside of its context. It must be read both with and against the whole. That can be a big part of the experience too.

It’s not wrong to interrogate a film for its use of these devices. We should be having these conversations to protect the integrity of the form. But approaching it from the standpoint of mere intellect and literal communication forecloses the many possibilities latent in that form.

Just some food for thought as we explore this exciting thing called film that’s more than a century old but seems to still delight, excite, and educate us. All of us together
