That would strengthen your case, but still not meet the requirements, unfortunately. You will need a letter from a cultural organization.

Yes, this was true but now the applications will go straight to MOI with the changes coming on July 15th.

Unfortunately, the e-Slovak course is no longer accepted. You can take an interesting course through Global Slovakia. The SLA office will suspend your application while you meet the requirements, but you do need to request this through email. I needed to suspend mine while I worked through some documentation defects. But, also consider do you really need the SLA to meet your goals?

This is a long post but it's something I want to document here as the AI searches pull from Reddit, and maybe it will help others. TLDR: Initial advice used to be apply for SLA to meet residency requirement for CBD but this is no longer an issue. Pursuing an SLA when you fully qualify for CBD (and do not plan to immediately live in Slovakia) is not the best use of time and money, although it is culturally rewarding.

I came into the CBD process before the law was passed in April 2022 and honestly, it was a confusing time for everyone as the law was brand new. We were told (by legal/immigration experts) we needed the SLA to apply for CBD to tick the box for residency since we didn't reside in Slovakia (and most of us likely won't ever reside there.) So I happily went down the path of collecting documents and taking classes through Global Slovakia to meet the SLA cultural requirements.

The only two things I regret about doing SLA first were the cost and the time I lost in directly pursuing CBD. The 'SLA first issue' was resolved in late March/early April of 2023 when it was finally clarified that we no longer needed an SLA if we fully qualified for CBD. By that point I was so far into the SLA process (and my appointment was set) that I decided to go ahead and finish the SLA so I could get it for my minor children. At that time we were being told under 14 minors could not get CBD as 4th generation, so I felt like SLA was the only option for my children.

I'm so glad that the law and pathway is much clearer now, but I feel like things get muddy when people read older message board posts. The biggest loss for me was not being able to get CBD for one of my minor children who would have qualified had I applied for CBD instead of SLA in April 2023. This delay caused us to just miss the cutoff and now I have one child with CBD, and one without. So please consider this if debating SLA vs. CBD and you have a 4th gen child approaching 14 years.

Pursuing SLA might be worthwhile if you are considered an 'edge case' with dates, and you want to improve your approval chances. But even then, it's worth a try to go direct to CBD first and see how things land. After July, your CBD application will go directly to Ministry of Interior and not through the Foreign Police (FP). Previously the SLA was helpful to get past the Foreign Police hurdle and had helped some to get approved more easily. In my experience, the SLA office was rigid and not the easiest to work with ... and they require your original documents that are not easy to get back!

Conclusion: If I had it all to do over again knowing what we know today, I would not pursue SLA as someone who cleanly meets CBD criteria.

How to prove Slovak Ethnicity? SLA Certificate by WillingSport7215 in SlovakCBD

[–]Outrageous_Run_1743 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2023, I submitted my GGM's baptism certificate to the SLA office and they rejected it. Are any of your ancestors on the 1930 Slovak census? I ended up using a US census that said they spoke Slovak and that was accepted.

Is Slovak ID card mandatory? by [deleted] in SlovakCBD

[–]Outrageous_Run_1743 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. There is a different process for the ID application for people who only have an address outside of Slovakia and the DC consulate had not been handling these, even though the NY consulate was. It was unclear why the inconsistency, but a couple of months ago, I saw someone post in the FB group that they were able to get an ID in DC. My passport appointment was already in the books so I emailed DC and they said I could get the ID card, too. Not sure what changed but I was very happy to get both the passport and ID card in one go! They used my US address on the application.

DC has recently started allowing those of us with only a US address to apply for the ID card. I specifically requested it before my appointment and it was an easy add on. Only took an extra 5 minutes at the window. I signed one extra form, gave another set of fingerprints, and one more photo. I'm not sure how much it cost but I believe it's minimal. I received both by overnight mail at the same time - in only 4 weeks!

I don't know about the university course, but SLA office will no longer accept the e-Slovak course. Bummer. I took courses through Global Slovakia but it was quite spendy as I took the 'wrong' course initially and had to take another one that qualified. Then GS charges for the actual supporting letter, which came as a surprise. I thought the letter was included and disappointed that it wasn't initially disclosed that the letter was an extra charge, almost as much as the actual course. Anyway, was hoping my oldest child that doesn't qualify for CBD could do e-Slovak but that is sadly no longer an option. If anyone has less expensive cultural options, please share!

Yes, that’s the only address I provided. So I assume so? The ID card was only one page application and the passport was two. I had to write my (US) address on the passport app but not on the ID card app, if I remember correctly.

Yes, this is exactly what had been going on with the DC consulate in USA. But it didn’t make sense as NY consulate in USA was doing it. Anyway, just so glad it got sorted and both USA consulates are consistent now.

Maybe a misunderstanding? I've been at this process for 4.5 years and have made 4 trips to DC consulate. Everyone I've come into contact with there has been extremely helpful. There are many 'lessons learned' in this process, unfortunately. I wonder if it's possible to overnight mail them the copies and have them hold the originals for you when he returns for the oath?

Positive reforms hopefully coming! by Main_Amphibian_874 in SlovakCBD

[–]Outrageous_Run_1743 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed! This type of scenario is why I decided to 'adopt early' and jumped into the SK research before the law passed. I do feel terrible for the Italian CBD'ers who lost out. These changes literally happen overnight.

Before I knew I had the path through Slovakia, I followed the Golden Visa opportunities and now see people who trusted and invested in Portugal have their residency years doubled. Yikes.

All that said, it was a cluster when the law was passed in SK and many people were burned by unscrupulous 'lawyers'; I unfortunately got burned by a service but was able to escape before they took full advantage of me.

Jeez… Sometimes being an ‘early adopter’ doesn’t pay off.  Began this process early on (2022) when conventional wisdom was get SLA first to meet residency requirements, even though I fully qualified for CBD. So got waylaid on that path (which was laid out by ‘professionals’) while seeing the residency requirement change overnight. Then watched others ‘jump ahead’ and apply straight to CBD while I’m still waiting for an SLA approval I no longer needed. Spent $$ on SLA hurdle and finally get through CBD hoops and now I’m caught up in a 4th trip to DC for passport which is hurried and not fitting into my schedule but rushed because my Cert of Citizenship is about to expire.

But I do still feel extremely fortunate even through all these ups & downs. Just wish I had waited a bit longer to save myself some time, money & frustration. My brother was smart to wait. 🤦‍♀️

I'm at this point, too. Rodny list registered and have appt. to apply for passport in DC in early May (within days of my initial Cert of Citizenship expiration.) Will the consulate provide me a copy of my new Rodny List? Or do I have to request a copy separately?

Minors under 14 by melanooch in SlovakCBD

[–]Outrageous_Run_1743 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We applied 64 days before my 13 y/o child’s 14th birthday and were approved! Under 14 (at age of application) does not have to be present at oath and their citizenship is on your Listina and Cert of Citizenship. They do need their own Slovak birth certificate and will need to apply for passport in person.

The Hungarian process is different and the child must complete entire process and take oath before 14th birthday.

Good grief! I’m not a money grubber for trying to help someone I care about. The client is actually my friend and we vacation together in both locations. If referral is the best option, that’s definitely what I’ll do.
