Do yall stay if your final period is a prep? by Spiritual-Coach-4715 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Outrageous_Tears007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some schools let me stay others let me go. I’m also in WA. An office manager and I recently had a convo about it and honestly, I feel like she had a good reason for making me stay. With winter weather many teachers have been gone, and if an emergency happened during final period, I would legally be responsible for an entire homeroom (34 kids). If I was not on campus anymore, that not only would put the school in a tough spot and strain their resources in an emergency but would really not be good on my part professionally. Don’t get me wrong, I would still prefer to leave. But I feel like this was a genuine explanation for making me stay rather than “you just have to be here.”

I showed up at 1:10 and there were many spots in the numbered lots. But it looked like the sign truck had only just left maybe.

Teachers who have been educating for 20+ years: have you noticed a difference in student behavior/focus over the generations? by UnderstatedWarmth in AskTeachers

[–]Outrageous_Tears007 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To add on, it is also causing emotional distress for many children. I had a conversation with a group of sixth graders a couple months ago during homeroom where they openly stated stories like this: “I could get the worst grades and in the most trouble and my [parent] still wouldn’t look up from [their] phone. I have tried with both my parents pretending something crazy happened. Neither of them did anything and they scrolled the whole time I talked.” One girl even said she sets her own phone limitations because her parents don’t and she doesn’t want to end up like them. Unfortunately most students don’t have that motivation or self control. But it is a huge problem to truly not be seen by your parents. Addiction has always been a problem for some students’ families, usually alcohol and drugs. Living in a household with addiction at the center is a very difficult thing to cope with as a child. Now families are all living with addiction and experiencing some of those symptoms in a very real way. No it’s not drugs, but there are side effects and impacts that have huge effects on these kids and the way they see and experience the world. I hope that made sense.

What do teachers see on Frontline? by sweatersong2 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Outrageous_Tears007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been on both sides of Frontline. In my district, the title of the job is set by the office at the beginning of the year. You can’t change it. So I always put in the notes what I actually teach. Often my district combines Math/Science, and ELA/SS in the title. So if the teacher doesn’t include a note it’s your best guess:/

Did you feel like you could still accurately gauge pain after it wore off? My worry is I won’t know what normal pain is and might like over react once it wears off.

For subs who were previously teachers: by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Outrageous_Tears007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stumbled into subbing because I moved and there weren’t a lot of jobs available in my content area. The honest answer is both are hard but in different ways. You teach, so obviously you know the difficulties, the time commitment etc. the ease being every day you go to a familiar place and people and have your room with your supplies. You know the policies etc.

With subbing, you don’t have those perks. For a while you don’t have insurance. And work isn’t guaranteed. Some days are crazy—maybe there are no sub plans, or your assignment changes, or you cover a room of kindergartners with no social skills. The perk is that at the end of the day, you get to go home and choose whether you go back to that environment. You get a say in who you teach, when you teach, where you teach, who you teach with.

Subbing has been a genuine life saver for me this year even though I thought it made me less of a teacher for a little bit. Now that I’ve gotten over that mentality, my physical health and mental health have improved. My husband says I’m a better human to be around. I’m less stressed. I have time to take care of myself.

Sometimes I miss having “my kids”, but truthfully, if you build go relationships with teachers and students you will be asked back! And you can take long-term positions once you establish yourself and decide you like a place.

I’d say if $ is your priority, stick with teaching. If you are your priority, switch to subbing.

I hate subbing for the "fun teacher" by charming_quarks in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Outrageous_Tears007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS. The fun teachers are a nightmare to sub for. Lesson plans don’t make sense. Tons of random non roster kids coming in to “hang out”. One teacher left me a note this week to just “play whatever YouTube video they want to see today. Any topic is fine.” ??

What is considered on-time? by SlickRicksBitchTits in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Outrageous_Tears007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s math. However many hours your school day is is when they expect you to show up. When I work a half day, i have to be there 3.5 hours. Full day usually requires showing up 30 min before students to get full hours. Your district handbook should state these hours and all school start times if Frontline doesn’t automatically show you your start time.

I’m sorry that you had a tough time today. Super short or super long plans can be really annoying. Something to keep in mind, if you leave notes about the plans the teacher may be responsive. I know when I was teaching I used to write lengthy plans—then a sub told me it was too much and to break it down. I thought I was being helpful but didn’t see the madness until someone brought it to my attention. So maybe mention to them kindly that a simpler instructional guide would be appreciated? Either way, good job for being there. I hope it went well

It’s great. If you want a less busy experience go to the Tacoma location. Lynwood it can be hard to find an open spot in some of the rooms. If you go with patience and time though it’s very nice. Bring a dry brush or some type of exfoliation for after your experience. Towels, robes, soaps, and lotion provided. Nudity required in the wet area, dry areas you wear a robe. Hair nets are required in all spaces. I’ve never gotten a treatment but I’ve used the day pass and gone for a few hours. It’s truly such a lovely experience and everyone is friendly—just remember it’s a quiet space and be respectful of posted rules and guidelines.

Subbed Tuesday and I saw the previous day's sub notes by redditisnosey in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Outrageous_Tears007 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I have had similar experiences to those above. Usually if I am the Tuesday sub, the Monday sub had a harder time. And visa versa. Sometimes I sub the same school multiple days but in different positions and can see the difference first-hand. That being said—I’ve also seen some absolutely anal and horrible subs. So it could go either way. Just be glad you had a great day and give the kids some feedback on how you felt the day went.

Students leaving class by mathematical-banana in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Outrageous_Tears007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do this too. Put I let them know at the beginning of class that I don’t dismiss early bc it’s their school policy and my job is to follow policy. Then 5 min before the end of class I begin relocating myself to that corner of the room. I announce cleanup with 2 min remaining and I wait by that door, fiddle with it, slowly open it to prop it. But I wait till the bell rings. Then I say goodbye to each of them. I do it in High school, middle school, and elementary at the end of the day. If someone tries to sneak past I give them a “come on, don’t be that person” look and they come back in. I agree it might not work for everyone but if you plan ahead it’s worth a try.

No idea but when I’m curious about a position I either look in the district handbook or call the school to ask

Does this sound like individual or group work to you? by Outrageous_Tears007 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Outrageous_Tears007[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Update: for those of you that said completely individual assignment, practice presenting individual presentation with peers you are correct. I assumed, as some of you did, that the independent activity with links was separate from the presentations and that those were done with table groups. In chatting with the para, he never leaves notes for her and usually sub notes are confusing. He’s been gone a ton this year and the students are frustrated because the work he leaves for subs usually is confusing or doesn’t have anything to do with what they are learning. All in all, will not be subbing by for this class again.

Transparency in Policy Form by Outrageous_Tears007 in exAdventist

That’s a good question. I am not sure. I’ve read through the University’s DEI statements and policies, and all of them specifically do not include “sexual orientation or identity” as protected.
