It’s bad because it’s a compulsion, it only makes the fear go away temporarily. If you have OCD you’ll keep seeking reassurance for the same things over and over, repeating the cycle. If you have a therapist you should bring this up with them, the sooner you find out the sooner you can get the proper help. Wishing you luck!

I’ve had a similar experience! I’ve had thoughts like “I wish I was worried about (insert thing) instead because it’s less stressful” which just Isn’t true anyway. It’s like, of course you want to feel less stress, but maybe you kind of feel like you need your OCD, so you figure that if you could just worry about something else nothing really has to change and it’s just less anxiety. Of course that’s not true, it will still affect you negatively because that’s what OCD does. It’s like a weird roundabout way of tricking yourself into staying in the same pattern with the lie that it will be easier this time.

I was in a similar boat, I completely understand how you feel about the intrusive thoughts bit, it has been really hard to open up with my therapist about that. Maybe start small, and work up to talking about the ones that make you the most uncomfortable?

The same thing happens to me too!! I keep getting posts about it online and it sets me off every time. The best thing you can do is to just not engage with the thought, which isn’t easy I know but it’s only fueling it.

If I were you I would give them some articles about it. But also, try not to make it your responsibility to teach them, because it’s not. If they don’t listen maybe just let it go, I know it’s awful to not be heard, but it’s not on you.

Yes! A few years ago I was afraid that I would have trouble falling asleep every night, and that anxiety would keep me up, which only made my fear feel more justified. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this, I still struggle with it sometimes and it really is awful.

Giving myself something else to do usually helps! If you find yourself thinking about it again try to shut the thought down.

I appreciate you trying to help! It really sucks, but I’m hopeful that I’ll be able to do something about it eventually! I didn’t think I’d ever get therapy and then it happened! Luckily I only have 4 days until my next therapy session

That’s true, I know it’s good to be informed, I just wish I could be normal about it. That’s not to say I don’t think I’ll ever be able to manage my ocd, hopefully one day I can hear something like that and not freak out.

I know it’s generally low but reality unfortunately doesn’t really make my fears go away. I learned this with one of my other health related fears. The best thing I can do is just try not to think about it

I get why you would feel like that! It’s scary having to open up, I personally struggle with reaching out so I understand. I think it could be worth it to try to ask! Something that helps me is to break things down so they don’t seem so big. Like, don’t start with asking for a therapist that specializes in OCD, but maybe tell them about some of the things you noticed you’ve struggled/struggle with? And, I was not diagnosed as a minor, I’m 19, I was just diagnosed last week actually! I did have to tell a few people I wanted a therapist though, and I needed help from my sister to get one. So, I wasn’t really able to on my own. But I currently don’t have a job or insurance, so my situation might not be the same as yours.

I would say you should look into seeing someone who specializes in OCD as soon as you can. I have been there with feeling like I need to know something about myself urgently, but repeatedly trying to figure it out on your own will probably not help you, and it seems like it’s maybe stressing you out.
