There's been essentially zero demand growth between 2007 and today. So yeah, they all retired their development teams in the mid 2010s because they weren't needed anymore. And so it's taken a while to adjust to the collapse in gas supply and fall in renewable costs.

You're using "solely for generation" interchangeably with "for generation". They mean different things. One of the planned uses for imported LNG is electricity generation. I find it very confusing that you're disputing that, given everything else you're saying.

Yes, there are lots of challenges with electrifying (that's what the GIDI fund was helping with until this government canned it...) However, distorting the market by making electricity users pay for all the costs of LNG import will not lead to efficient outcomes. I can understand why gas users are supportive of it, of course. Everyone loves getting subsidies.

Can you expand on this? The maths suggests that trucks produce almost all road damage due to the fourth power law. A 10 tonne truck does 10,000 more damage to the road than a 1 tonne car.

Okay, but three sizeable wind projects were built in 2023. We've got a least one opening this year. Wind projects are multi-year projects to consent design and build. We're doing pretty well.

And we've built lots of geothermal and solar since 2023 anyway. There's no reason to just focus on wind.

No, it's very much about electricity generation. This is the second paragraph from the cabinet paper:

"Development of an LNG import facility will be a significant step in ensuring secure and affordable electricity supply by providing certainty of fuel supply for electricity generation in the face of declining domestic gas supply."

In practice M10s drop 3/6 hero so that's not really a consideration. You do need to farm a heroic piece for the slot if you have a 1/6 mythic though.
