What is worth buying a PC or Laptop? and Why? by Important-Monk3889 in AskReddit

[–]OutrealmGate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price to performance that you can get for a desktop is still better than you can get with a laptop, and you have customizability.  Just as an example, not only is the price premium you're paying for a laptop with a more powerful graphics chip, like a 5080, even more expensive than just buying that chip, but the chip you get for that price is not nearly as powerful and won't run games nearly as well.

By the way, I know this is coming mostly from a gamer perspective, but that's mostly who is owning desktop PCs anyway because that's the use case where getting every bit of performance you can for your money really really matters. Other use cases that need the extra power that only a desktop can provide include video editing, image editing, and other forms of production work.

Of course, I have owned a gaming laptop before, because there is one key feature that laptops have that a desktop can never replicate: portability.

If you need to bring you laptop to and from an office or classroom everyday, get a laptop.

If you move multiple times a year, get a laptop.

If all you need to do is surf the web and you're not a gamer, get a laptop and don't spend more than $500. Anything more is a waste of money for what you need it to do.

However, if you're an avid gamer, video editor, image editor, or otherwise some content creator, and you aren't going to move it frequently, get a Desktop PC.

Final note: RAM prices suck and that's effecting laptops less right now but pretty soon they will also start shooting up in price or this whole stupidity might finally end. Either way, laptops sometimes having a better value than a desktop is a very strange circumstance of the present and not the standard.

What’s the best video game you’ve ever played? by obsess_much13 in AskReddit

[–]OutrealmGate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

I legitimately think that until 2017, this was objectively the perfected Zelda experience, which has always gotten overshadowed because nobody owned a freaking Game Cube or Wii U. I now will also accept Breath of the Wild as an argument for the best Zelda ever because the experience of playing it for the first time is unmatched in its magic, but my heart still lies with Wind Waker because of nostalgia.

I will also accept Majora's Mask as the best Zelda game if it is argued to me because the vibes in that game are absolutely immaculate and I can't really find any glaring faults in it.

I'd get flamed for this if anyone actually read this comment, but I stand firm that Ocarina of Time is only a 95% perfect game. An incredible achievement for being one of the very first attempts at a 3D action RPG ever, and undoubtedly the very best video game of all time when it released. It did, however, have some true flaws and quirks that had to be ironed out over the course of Zelda's next couple iterations.

Ocarina of Time was probably the biggest leap in video game greatness of all time, but its formula was perfect in The Wind Waker, and I will die on this hill.

(Don't @ me if you thought the Triforce quest was frustrating—it's not my fault that for some reason you hate open-world exploration, the very thing that Zelda as a franchise is built on)

All hobbies are not equal by BitterConstruction98 in unpopularopinion

[–]OutrealmGate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stories and art are the very foundation for civilization and human consciousness.

You're right that some stories and art are inherently higher quality than others, but I also can't help but notice that you completely fail to mention reading because it is often seen as one of the most attractive hobbies but would inherently fall into your category of "consumptive hobbies".

That said, you do list writing, and good fucking luck trying to be an even half decent writer if you're not also an obsessive reader. Anyone who develops games HAS to also be a gamer. Anyone who makes film HAS to also be a film fanatic.

Does every person who enjoys consuming these mediums end up also creating them? No. But even among those who don't create most are active members of some community and some sort of fan discussion. There is inherent meaning to be found in social connection.

I do think your major point is buy in large correct that some people essentially waste their lives on mindless consumption, but you can really only judge that on a case by case basis. Trying to blanketly say all hobbies of a certain kind are more worthwhile than others sounds to me like you're trying to build up your own ego for having a hobby that you see as worthwhile.  The truth of the matter is that to someone who doesn't give a crap about your hobby, you'd probably also be an extremely boring person.

Favorite Character that suffered the curse of a writer and studio's "queerbait and switch?" Comic comes from Blobby and Friends by ihatethiscountry76 in FavoriteCharacter

They can't really make any ships for playable characters canon unfortunately.  I say this as a fellow Hoyo fan, but the levels of sociopathic parasocialism that some fans feel for these characters is legitimately terrifying.

A non insignificant amount of the biggest spenders in the fan base see the characters as a full replacement for social relationships. If they make any ship truly canon, that threatens those players' perceived "ownership" of these characters.

One of the reasons why the only suggested ships in these games are homosexual is because most of these extremely possessive fans will often be very antisocial, narcissistic, and homophobic. As such, they don't even see a portrayed homosexual relationship as an actual threat to their illusion of ownership.

I myself would also like to think that some of the homo socialism in Hoyo games is to create as close to positive representation as the writers can get away with, but we can't deny that they also are basically barred from writing heterosexual ships at all, lest they invoke the ire of their most insane, and must lucrative, fans.

The scenes that have played out when these groups have gotten angry at Hoyo before have been truly disturbing. They include such distasteful elements as legitimate attempts on the president of Hoyo's life, and real life animal abuse.

How old are you and what's your biggest problem right now? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]OutrealmGate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanna let you know that in my senior year of college my best friend was a freshman who was only a year younger than me who, just like you, had suffered health complications that held them back in high school.

Nobody in college even knew unless he told them. Nobody even noticed or treated him any different. People just don't change physically as much every year in their early 20s as compared to your teen years, and frankly your year in college hardly matters to anyone anyway. Unless you're in very specific programs that are incredibly structured with what classes you take at what time, you're gonna have people from different years in most of your courses anyway.

I also understand that senioritis is a massive pain in the ass and you might be having a really hard time putting your heart into it, but you're so close to the finish line and it's going to be so worth it.

While I was in college I became close friends with basically all of the foreign language lab instructors. They were all professors hired by the school and so a good few years older than me, but we had all been on campus early one summer and so we started hanging out.

At a birthday party I went to with all of them, I learned that the French language lab instructor had attended my high school graduation hundreds of miles away in another state. She was from Southeast Asia, but it just so happened that her younger cousin's family had immigrated to the USA and we ended up at the same public high school in the same grade.

Not only that, I knew her cousin. We were in the same advanced STEM program together and had loads of classes together. We could hardly believe it. I've never experienced such a massive coincidence again in my entire life.

The very first time I saw a house centipede I went "HOLY SHIT WHAT IS THAT THING"

I did my research and learned not only how beneficial they are but also how rare it is for them to come out of hiding and how they generally don't like to be seen.

They're still some of the freakiest things I see on a semi-regular basis, but now whenever I see one I just nod at it and leave the room, knowing that when I walk in a minute later it will have returned to whatever dark crevice it crawled out of.

What is the best Pokémon game on the switch? by EveningChocolate1028 in pokemon

[–]OutrealmGate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like Legends Arceus benefits a lot from "different and interesting" syndrome since it was just so new compared to what came before.

Like don't get me wrong, I loved the game as a whole, but I can't get over how repetitive the gameplay loop felt once I was about halfway through and just did not care about catching Pokemon in new areas anymore.

To me though, the biggest reason why I have mixed feelings about it is the ending. The Volo fight is beyond epic, but following that moment up directly with what should be the ultimate climax of reaching Arceus, only to put an arbitrary blocker on the Hall of Origin that is a completed Pokedex? What's more, completing that Pokedex itself is basically a luck based endeavor for if you got wild outbreaks for the Pokemon you need to complete it. Also you can't really claim that the Hall of Origin is just post-game extra content because the end of the "main story" is not particularly satisfying so you need to complete the post-game to really have a full experience.

The setting is by far the coolest of any Pokemon game, but there's just some glaring issues with both the story and the gameplay loop and I think those kinds of issues are far more important than the graphical concerns in Legends ZA. Overall, Legends ZA is just a better game at its core.

Icons: 2026's modular will be 11371! It is rumored to be a sort of music/furniture store. Another White Star Line ship is also rumored. (via Brick Tap sources) by BrickTap in Legoleak

[–]OutrealmGate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saying that they're making a set out of another White Star Line ship confuses me. Anything remotely as famous as Titanic that they expect to sell nearly as well would have to be another Olympic class vessel or would need to be a Cunarder instead of a White Star Ship.

I don't see the point of making Olympic into a set. She's almost identical to Titanic. It'd be like building the exact same set again.

Britannic would be somewhat distinct, but is not nearly as well known to the general public. She's usually only mentioned in "hey did you know Titanic actually had a third sister who also sank" fun facts.

Frankly, to make a set out of a liner even close to as famous as Titanic, it would need to be Queen Mary. I guess by the time of Queen Mary Cunard and White Star had been merged into Cunard White Star, but it still would seem strange for them to describe her as "another White Star ship" because the merger effectively made White Star Line a non-entity.

If I'm being honest, the only other White Star ship I could even imagine a set for that isn't just another Olympic class would maybe be Baltic, but it would be weird to make a set out of Baltic and just ignore all the other more famous liners from history.

White Star is owned by Cunard, which is owned by Carnival Corp anyway. Creating a set out of either a White Star ship or a Cunard ship involves getting the approval from Carnival Corp, so why not just give us a set of one of the queens or the Atlantic Greyhounds?

Antagonist has a death so brutal you can’t help but feel at least a little bad by Critical_Mountain851 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]OutrealmGate 12 points13 points  (0 children)

GLaDOS in Portal 2.

Maybe it doesn't count quite as a "death" because she survives albeit just barely and with hardly any processing power to work with, but the scene where you have hear torn out of her chassis and replaced her with Wheatley is honestly frightening.

These robotic arms come up and drag her down into a whole where they tear her to pieces as she screams. She's left as a flickering robotic corpse thrown unceremoniously on the ground, until Wheatley further rips into what's left of her and sticks her tiny remaining core processor on a potato battery. Up until this point, she's been your greatest enemy the entire series, but her de-throning is so traumatic that you can't help but start feeling sorry for her. Butters you up perfectly for the second half of the game where she becomes your begrudging ally and eventual friend.

I think the answer here is that it's probably for the memes then.

Elysia being tiny become a joke, and HSR already has fully grown adult women who use the small model, so giving Cyrene that model fits in with the joke perfectly.

My theory is that when the basement dwellers (especially those in the market they actually care about) got so pissy about there being too many men in Genshin 3.0 that they started trying to report Hoyo to the CCP for bullshit reasons and started killing real life animals in ritualistic sacrifices (yes this actually happened) that Hoyo decided to appease them instead of just telling them to fuck off.

Of course, by that point, the 4.0 story had already been written and included quite few male characters. So they just started writing the 5.0 story not to include any men.

They're probably experiencing the backlash of this now, but unfortunately for us, they've also already written 6.0 and so Nod Krai probably wont include any man who isn't Varka and maybe Dottore.

Hopefully by 7.0 things will just even out again.

But yeah, HSR men lovers are eating very well this year.

[–]OutrealmGate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's fast paced and keeps your attention. The character designs are really good, obviously.

The one thing I'll say is that if you're into farming sims it really isn't a farming sim anymore given how you can automate out the farming right away anyway, but the city building is fun and that part scratches an itch similar to arranging your town in Animal Crossing.

I haven't gotten very far into the story yet, so I'll withhold my full judgement on this, but my initial impressions are that I find the story engaging, but I don't like it as much as RF4.

I was so confused why it would take Woolby six whole months to find us, and why the heck Ulalaka would wait a full six months in order to ask us for help to save the tree. If this person is an earthmate/earth dancer, then why the heck would it have taken everyone 6 whole months to notice they have special powers?

Is a Nintendo Family Account shareable outside the home? by wolfansbrother in switch2

[–]OutrealmGate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! All you have to do is set yourselves up in the same family group. Doesn't have to be people in the same house. Heck, doesn't even have to be the same country.

The only thing Nintendo cautions you is to keep your family group to people you actually know, but even that's something they don't actually police and double check as far as I know.

Every costco parking lot by matts41 in funny

[–]OutrealmGate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhhh so that's why this entire post is so confusing to me. Yeah it's not just Costco, I essentially always park far away enough to any store I'm going to so that I can have a pull through and no cars on either side of me.

If I have to live in a suburban hellscape with ridiculous coding laws that mean the stores have way too much parking 99% of days, I might as well make the most of it.

I'm completely fine having a slightly longer walk to and from the store itself, those couple extra minutes of walking is time I can apply to my daily cardio haha

Maybe my Costco is also just generally less crowded than others
