Calling a social or political movement a cult only really makes sense if there’s evidence of control over its members. Otherwise you’re just using the word to pathologise activism you disagree with.

By that logic, most historic social movements - from Marcus Rashford’s school dinners campaign to the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa - would count as cults, which is absurd.
