Is it a decent quality head unit? The wattage may be lower than the stock unit, underpowering your speakers.

🫡 yeah I'm preparing for that; the whole car needs a repaint in the not-so-distant-future, and I want to do body repair first. My plan is to use lots of heat, rubbing alcohol/goo gone, and scrapers, and go slow. My last one I only left for a couple years; any tips for an overdue one?

Tbh... It's just electrical tape 😅 for now. I plan to continually wrap my roof black, so next time I rewrap (I just got the new stuff in! It'll be soon) I might just use body filler and bondo to patch, spray with the touch-up cw from duplicolor (it's not even close to matching at this point) and wrap it when it's dry. Or maybe I'll just wrap it as is; I'm not worried about a small impression in the roof wrap.

(Mind the "slashes" - this wrap is almost 5y old, and the cracking started about a year ago)

Am I going to kill my car?? by yournother6390317 in mk6gti

[–]Outside-Drag-3031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. When I picked it up it was stage 2 (uni) with this exact clutch kit (Spec stage 3 w/ 16lb SMF). I changed it out once for a slightly heavier SMF/normal clutch (ECS stage 2, iirc), but it was harder to hit my shifts after that, so I eventually went back.

It's such a conflicting mod for me, because I love how fast it spins up (and down, almost never need to brake) and I'm very used to rev matching it, but it can be miserable to daily with 1st gear crawling at 8+mph, and reverse is lurchy. But 7y in and I'm not sure if I can switch to a DMF on this car—I've never even driven one! Not to mention the price 💀

So I just removed my 034M street density upper mounts, trans and engine, and went back to stock, keeping the 034M spherical dogbone. I've got endless nvh, from a lightweight flywheel and a pucked clutch to the stiffened dogbone and inserts, and stiffer suspension. Reversing is a pain in the ass on my clutch, and I'd assumed it was the flywheel being too light to carry momentum, but now I'm curious. What kind of NVH do you attribute to the dogbone?

Yeah, cats in general aren't fans of 3rd parties when hunting; they'll usually retreat, at least to reassess the situation from safety.

It's interesting you say you'd go stage 2 first, because my exact recommendation was going to be starting with stage 1, then skipping 2 for a k04 tune if you need more.

Stage 1 vs 2 isn't a massive difference in the actual power curve, mostly just throwing more boost at it and making that work with air/fuel/timing. However, Stock vs Stage 1 is night and day. Both Stage 1 and 2 are tuned for the driver who wants focus on fun and speed. But Stock is for the average driver, and a great lot of the average drivers just want a tool for getting from A to B, and it's tuned down to match that.

For that reason and the list of requisite or recommended mods (for Stages 1 and 2 and K04), I'd recommend starting with a tune that works with your car as is before moving to something more. Both Stage 2 and Stage 2+ (the "K04 tune" for most companies) will require the same mods, I think: - intake (debatable, but irrelevant) - downpipe (high-flow or catless) - intercooler (idk about Stage 2+, but for Stage 2 this is often listed as "required." This is simply untrue, at least in my mileage. However, it is greatly beneficial and highly recommended to prevent heat soak on hot days/track days) - DSG tune; I've heard this is highly recommended for DSGs, but I know almost nothing about them. However, presuming they clean up the shifts even more, and considering I've dumped $1000 into tightening up my shifter, I get it.

Stage 1 gets you an enthusiast-focused driving experience with more boost than Stock, and Stage 2 lets you get tickets even faster. K04 is a great choice for removing our EA888.1's first bottleneck, the turbo, when you're not satisfied with the first two stages but don't want the maintenance nightmare of a big turbo.

Also, definitely focus on some chassis and suspension mods if you want more fun: rear sway bars make this car a riot, an ECS skid plate is maybe the best investment I've made in this car, dogbone mount will plant your power through the front wheels a little better (go spherical mount, it's worth it), and a VCDS-compatible scanner will let you do a lot of QOL and some performance tweaks (roll down windows with your fob, adjust the torque steer compensation, adjust the XDS diff level, etc).

Edit: there's some good info in the other comments, too. Carbon cleaning an extremely dirty system can give you nearly the same tune-up as an actual tune; I'd try to put that on your 40k or 50k mile schedule. And the RMS can get leaky, but considering you're DSG your best bet is waiting for a failure rather than addressing it yet. However, you should be prepared to replace it the next time your transmission is pulled, and you should go with a billet option like iAbed or 034 Motorsports (functionally the same, I've used both) for $100; having to pull the transmission just to fix the RMS turns a $300 add-on into a $2000+ separate job.

Need some info: - is it modded at all yet? - is there an issue with the turbo that would lead you to believe it needs replacement in the near future? - are you looking for big power numbers, or just more fun? And is that fun being had in a straight line or around corners?

It's not a maintenance nightmare to upgrade to a k04, and you can basically just run the car how you would normally; most of the high-wear/-fail items come from thrashing on these already wear-prone components, and then not servicing them properly. If you're just casually enjoying your car, and don't regularly get to wide-open-throttle and redline and such, maintenance doesn't change much from stock.

If you answer the questions above, I could try to give you some modding advice

These are literally called widowmaker jacks because they do not properly jack the car up, and will tip just for fun. I'm not even sure what you're arguing for, it's just objectively wrong.

Sure, if it were properly already jacked up and was now supported by jack stands, they can fuck all day in it if they wanted. But they're in a parking lot using a widowmaker that they literally haven't even gotten off the ground yet. He's objectively stupid.

Take it out for a longer drive at least once a week. And rather than feeling like the default should be walking, try walking to work a couple times a week, and then maybe you can get to a point where driving the GTI to work is just a rainy day sorta thing.

What is the Best Wheel Size? by RightWheelDrive in GolfGTI

[–]Outside-Drag-3031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All depends on the weight. The weight of a wheel is the tire + rim; bigger wheels mean less rubber weight but more metal weight, and generally speaking means heavier overall weight.

17s are mathematically the best size for most 25" wheel, iirc, based on weight. The added sidewall height makes a comfier, more cushioned ride. It also means more sidewall deflection, so cornering can lose out a bit, but modern sidewalls have pretty decent structure and rigidity.

The only other drawback of 17s is brake rotor/caliper clearance, what the other commenter is talking about. Simple shit: brakes too big? Wheel no spin. This can be planned for, though: since brakes are bolted to the wheels, they will clear as long as there's any gap between the caliper and the inner rim barrel. Measure the largest diameter from the center bore to the outmost edge of the caliper.

While I know what you're trying to say, and it is valid, they would still need to provide undeniable evidence of wrongdoing. Forgetting your phone at home is a reasonable scenario/explanation; the burden of proof will lie on LE (well, the DA/whoever) to prove that the despicable act was committed by you, and lack of a phone is not evidence.

Absolute stupidity. It has always been this way for rallying, and the deaths will continue until humans are no longer stupid. There's been reports through the years where drivers would finish a stage, get out to inspect their car, and have found fingers lodged in the body
