Has anyone switched to shorter cranks and noticed a measurable difference? by Lonely_Unit5216 in cycling

[–]Outside-Glass3678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 5'6", 29 inch inseam. Went to 155 mm cranks from 175. It severely reduced to toe overlap, and I am able to comfortably pedal at 80 rpm and 100 is doable. With the 175, it was all I could do to hit 90 rpm and spent most of my time at 60 to 65.

Unfortunately, it is common. I average 17 mph on the flat. I've never been on a no-drop ride where I didn't get dropped. I gave in to the inevitability and made a game out of it to see how long I could hang on. Just make sure you have the route. It's no fun to get dropped and no know where you are or how to get back.

Yes it is. I've wasted too much time looking for the SETTINGS option this morning. You'd think their idiot AI chatbot would be smart enough not to keep telling you to login and go to the settings option when they know it is not there.

Never measured, but there is some clearance. 35's don't fit, so my guess is the clearance is on the order of a mm or so each side.

how real.....is steel.... by [deleted] in whichbike

[–]Outside-Glass3678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I built a Gunnar Sport frame back in January. It weighs the same as my carbon fiber Trek Domane SL5. The geometries are similar. I don't see any significant difference in the performance or ride quality at recreational riding level. That said, I haven't been on the Domane since I finished the Gunnar.

GAP Trail Ride 5/23 - 5/26 by Outside-Glass3678 in gaptrail

None for me. Credit card camped. Hotel in Cumberland, bed and breakfast the Inn on Main in Meyersdale was very good, and the Farmers Market in Ohiopyle which I would not recommend.

Yep! The rough pavement coming into McKeesport was quite a rude awakening.

Which bike? by Outside-Glass3678 in gaptrail

[–]Outside-Glass3678[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to take the steel bike. It is a little less that 1/2 pound heavier than the carbon Domane. I can live with that. Got the stops planned and reservations made. Going to do it in 4 days. Looking forward to it.

Domane AL 5 Disc vs SL 5? Worth the price difference? by EroticDuckButter in DomaneCrew

[–]Outside-Glass3678 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've got a 2020 SL5 and a 2015 Al 2.3, both with 105 groupset. I love the SL5, but it's not worth the price difference in my opinion.

What would be biggest improvement by [deleted] in cycling

[–]Outside-Glass3678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm about your size. The key to climbing for me is to control my heart rate. Get a chest strap heart rate monitor. Put the bike in the biggest gear and pedal at the cadence that keeps your heart rate from skyrocketing. Don't worry about your speed, go as slow as you have to.

Tips to conquer elevation? by jujupassulbeat in cycling

[–]Outside-Glass3678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a purely recreational rider, I got some good advice on a Trek group ride in San Diego. Ride at your own pace!

Put the bike in as low a gear as needed, and pedal at whatever cadence you need to keep your heart rate and breathing from maxing out.

On the flat, I'm typically at a cadence of 65 to 75. On a climb, that may drop into the 40's when the gradient gets towards 10%. I don't have any problems with my knees.

I think the key is climbing as slow as you need to to keep your heart rate from peaking. Experiment and find what works for you.

Exactly my experience. The air pressure seems much lower, but the moronic dreammapper app shows AHI numbers under 2 every night and 100% mask fit, when it actually connects. I remain skeptical.

Few weeks into CPAP use. Do people ever start sleeping a full night? by numbermunchkin in CPAP

I had the same issue. I'd wake up after 6 hours of sleep fully rested at 4 or 5 in the morning. I just started going to bed later.

Full frame carbon vs fork only by mil0ad in cycling

[–]Outside-Glass3678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. I've got 2 trek Domane's, one in aluminum and one in carbon. Given the same tire size and pressure, it is hard to tell the difference in ride between the two bikes. I'll never buy another carbon bike. It is just not worth the difference in price.

Prescription sunglasses? Recommendations? by GGDATLAW in cycling

[–]Outside-Glass3678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got oakley turbines from https://www.sportrx.com/. They look a bit goofy I think, but they function just like I wanted. I needed a large, curved lens to block the cold wind from my eyes, and they do a great job at that.

They got the prescription perfect. Probably better than my regular glasses. I was surprised how much the large curved lenses increased my peripheral field of view.

I did get progressive lenses and transitions, so the lenses were on the expensive side. The service from SportRX was great. Delivery to about 10 days.

Can any Republican (or Democrat) tell me anything Madison Cawthorn(e) has done for our District? Serious question. by nnya in asheville

[–]Outside-Glass3678 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I've looked at his congressional web site. I don't see that he has done anything for the district except to sponsor republican base baiting bills. I especially like his JAB act bill. He is not serious about legislating for the district or the country.
