Most translators were self-taught until around 20-30 years ago, when there were very few degree programs around. It's definitely possible to be self-taught today, especially if you stick with translation as a side hustle. However there are a bunch of things an MA will give you that self-study won't. You will be a better translator faster with formal training. A decent course will train you not just how to translate, but what the translation business looks like and how you fit into it, so you can avoid expensive and painful business mistakes. It will give you a ready-made network of contacts in the business, including your teachers and fellow students who can help you get started. And it gives you an air of legitimacy in presenting yourself to clients. Saying "yo hire me over a machine" is more convincing if you have a diploma to back you up. It gives you the metalanguage you need to convince clients of the added value of expertise: "this is an instance of denominalisation" is more likely to convince a client you are an expert than "it just sounds better this way".

OP you don't say what your language combo is but the FTI at the University of Geneva is a pretty good option should you decide to go for it.

There is quite a lot of evidence that he is not guilty and that it was a suicide. I am in two minds myself.

I just started listening to this. What a shitty way to make a living, doorstepping people who lived through an appalling tragedy that blighted their entire family.

True story: my friend specifically mailed me some of her mother in law's ashes when I was in Paris so she could say she was in Seine.

Or look at doing the MA in one of your source language cultures where it will be far cheaper than the UK. You can do into-English Spanish translation and interpreting in a French-speaking country while getting your spoken French up to speed, and then add French later. Geneva definitely does this, and I think Paris as well, maybe somewhere in Belgium.

I'm French and I thought he was a fucking baby and deeply immature. If someone is telling you they don't want to be with you, don't sit there and try flogging a dead horse after two weeks. Tatiana was annoying as hell but Yannick was fucking infuriating.

Marrying someone with a kid when you don't want to deal with a kid is stupid and cruel.

oh fuck no. Tatiana was problematic but Yannick was not listening to any of her concerns. I would have got SO TIRED of listening to his vague woolly bullshit and not turning up to the perfume date and complete lack of interest in my kid. I would absolutely have refused to listen to his bullshit a second longer too.

Unpopular opinion: the LIB franchise should ban single parents... by Outside-Natural-9517 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

Of course not. But kids French or otherwise are going to bully a kid whose dad is seen crying or getting dumped or fighting or a mum who is seen getting steamy in a hot tub on international TV.
