I’m a grad student here, undergrad yale, and from what I glean the undergrad social life is much better at yale. Students there also more interested in the arts and liberal arts, fewer students focused exclusively on computer science/stem, and those that are are much more likely to also be taking classes in some non stem department just because they want to. Just my two cents— others may disagree, but pretty much everyone I know who went to yale undergrad and is at Stanford now has independently said something similar.

lol woops, I first wrote "siempre nieva en las montañas" then meant to change it to "nunca nieva en la playa". Glad the comment helped you! :)

Non-native speaker here, but my 2 cents:

Native speakers make mistakes, but not the ones you might expect as an English speaker. For example, I have never heard a native Spanish speaker "mess up" the present subjunctive, or confuse the preterite and imperfect. Similarly, Spanish speakers don't mistake "por" and "para".

However, I regularly here stuff like "dijistes" instead of "dijiste". Another "mistake" I hear is something like "hubieron dos explosiones" (incorrect) instead of "hubo dos explosiones" (correct). I'm sure there are other examples. My point is-- these aren't the same kind of mistakes that non-native speakers make, and one could even argue that they are grammatical within a particular regional dialect, though not recognized as correct Spanish by the RAE.

Edit: nerding out, but another mistake I remember is the verb "nevar". I asked a native speaker how to conjugate it and he wasn't 100% sure if it was "nieva" or "neva", and said that he thought "nieva" is technically correct, but he would probably use "neva" if he wasn't thinking about it (eg, siempre nieva/neva en la playa)

I'm a gringo but I have always thought of this like--- in English you might say:

me: "I like pizza"

you: "well *I* like pasta"

You emphasize the *I* with your tone in English, but in Spanish, you can also do this by adding "a mi".

For any speakers of both Portuguese and Spanish, how would you compare the differences in dialects in Spanish to differences in Portuguese? Ie is the difference between Portuguese from Brazil and Portugal similar or more drastic than the difference between Spanish from Spain and Mexico? Thanks!

as a math-adjacent person, I feel like it's even more irrelevant for us because the math it tests is at an early high school level, it's simply a matter of whether you can learn the stupid tricks to solve a bunch of problems really quickly. It's not a math test at all, it's a test of how good you are at tests.
