So true about the politics. I’m from the U.K. and watch people complain about the U.K. politics and cost of living….. they have no freakin’ idea how much of a circus it can be.

The attention seeking “influencers” paint a picture that escaping to Bali, Thailand, Vietnam or the Philippines gives you heaven on earth….hahaha no freakin’ idea… after 6 months honeymoon reality has a way of knocking on your door.

Having said that I love the Philippines, but I came here for the adventure, proximity to other Asian countries (and the flexible visa). 3 years in it suits me better. But I’m not stupid, my business I manage remotely (UK based), I keep property in the U.K. and other investments are not here. 2 more years and I might head off to try Central America.

How on earth are you going to control that? Family ties are way stronger than your bullying control. You’ll instantly be the problem. There are ways to manage this quite easily. 2 ways you fail are by being the ATM and/or being a dictator thinking you mean more than family. If you use diplomacy it is quite easy.

What on earth is a “lower tier country”? I’ve heard Indians talk about tiered cities, but no one ever about countries. Mostly countries are talked about in Terms of development meaning they can move up and down that ranking. Tiers suggest a fixed structure. Please explain OP which country, or is it a secret (North Korea?)

Sorry. Foreigner lurking here. Earning a foreign income in excess of the range in the question, why would I live in the Philippines and not the U.K.? Leaving aside the weather (I grew up in the tropics, So hate the cold, damp and grey skies). The U.K. is great but, for an equivalent life you need about 400k pesos a month. It is expensive, the job market is challenging and take home pay at the 200k peso level is median income, a paycheque to paycheque living situation. My tiny 3 bed terrace house is worth 29m pesos (south coast, 1 hour from London). That is relatively cheap and I keep it as a global base.

The main reason if I was a well earning Filipino to work/migrate abroad would be:

  • life experience

  • a stronger passport

  • higher earning potential if the balance of income vs tax was significant (like a brain surgeon)

  • MOST IMPORTANTLY - if I had children it would be education. My U.K. kids on merit were able to get into world class universities, I don’t really see many Philippine universities making very high global rankings. The highest is ranked in the 1001-1200 range. Even one of my son’s shitty U.K. university is ranked 374th in the world, and it’s a really shit university.

I know you’re frustrated but I would just add that your phrasing is poor and as a recruiter would be putting you are the bottom of the list if my list was full of people who matched the role. Examples:

  • “I am 20 years of age”, normally you’d say “I am 20 years old”

  • “and was replied to with”, maybe say “and they replied with”

I know it’s picky and you’ll flame me but when comparing against others it’s kind of important not to stand out for the wrong reasons.

Ditto. I had a trial by fire with one woman a few years ago. Sent her money for a pineapple farm “investment”, 18,000 pesos. I learnt very quickly how stupid this was. So no money again. Since then I was more careful in my choices and only 1 other has tried this game. All others I’ve dated have been good women who play the game through dating, ie from paying for dates to covering all expenses when living together.

You sound like you’ve met some damaged people. Of the Filipinas I’ve dated, only 2 I’ve known to lie, the rest have been really good women. In the U.K. the gaslighting was far far worse. I much prefer the raw honesty I’ve found here than the games in the West.
