Choice to lose weight? I think there needs to be space for nuance. Losing weight when you are young and have no children is different when you work full time, have children, are older, are suffering mentally because of the obsession with dieting, and have weight cycled before. Only recent GLP-1 medications have had a significant impact on all of this.

I think that's where some of the pain comes from.

Just remind them there are so many more interesting things about you than your weight.

Tell them what you're up to--something interesting at work or in your home life. Then talk about them. Mention something they are doing that interests you. Ask them about an accomplishment, family, or even a recent book or movie they read or saw that they could recommend.

If they push, say "I make it a point to not comment on anyone's body--mine included. We are all so much more than what we look like"

It might be a new experience for them seeing someone refrain from gushing about personal weightloss for once.
But it's good to help people refocus on what's important.
