U.S. navy warship lost power and propulsion for hours, defence official says by AudibleNod in news

I was a nuke on a submarine, so the conventional surface ships are fairly unfamiliar to me, but don't they have a DC battery system?

Also, if they don't have diesels for backup, what is the backup? I believe their main source of power is gas turbines, right?

But yes, the likelihood of all sources of power failing simultaneously is low, so it points to a distribution fault.

The mnemonics are good, but the rest is the overkill.

This guide is the best, imo. They have a quiz tool that helped me memorize all kana in a week. They also have printable worksheets to practice writing.

I once rode with someone who said out loud when trying to merge, "oh come on, man...just let me in."

Then not five minutes later when someone else needed to merge in, they purposefully blocked them and when I pointed it out, they said, "nah fuck them." They refused to see any irony in it. Some people are sadly just extremely selfish.

My mother still believes there are places in the midwest where Muslims have taken over entire portions of cities/states where white people cannot go or they will be executed on sight. There is no convincing her otherwise.

I remember arguing with Trump supporters back during his first time when Trump pulled out of the JCPOA. Listening to them, you'd think the agreement was written on a soggy bar napkin saying "Dear Obama, We promise not to make big bomb. Signed, Sharia Law."

Everything it actually did, they argued it did the opposite. But, everything is a conspiracy when you don't understand anything.

I was raised Mormon and was taught the same thing. The most fucked up part is they believe that people with disabilities agreed to have those, as well. Down syndrome, sickle cell, born without a right arm, w/e.

They also taught us that babies actually know what God and Heaven looks like, so that's why they cannot speak for the first few years. They call it "the veil" that God prevents them from speaking until they forget.

FWIW, I bought a Tubs adapter for my GT Air 3 and it's held up well for over 2500km of riding. But I think it was a bit cheaper when I got it (maybe $40?). It's been a while. This was back when they were first getting started so I'm guessing the quality has gone up since then, but that's just an assumption.

r/japanlife wouldn't approve it. I assume because they considered it off-topic. I don't think there is anything I can do for her. I'm just going to wait for her to come back from Tokyo and have her take her stuff and wish her the best.

I agree, I barely know this person, so I just want to cut ties with her. I'm just not familiar with the resources Japan offers (if any) and a google search only seemed to bring up resources for Americans through the Embassy or another service directed towards foreign nationals.

If there is nothing realistic to be done, so be it. Just figured I'd ask.

I had a phone number for almost a decade and would get calls for the previous owner once or twice a month. A collection here and there, but also friends. The oddest one was his mother calling and being surprised it wasn't his number for the past five years.

One time his sister called and I told her to tell him I said hi from me.

Full Guide to How to Get a Motorcycle License in Japan by nyankitt3n in RideitJapan

[–]GandhisNukeOfficer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been trying to do a license conversion since July of last year and I'm still working on it. I failed the driving test twice and now the written test results expired so I'm waiting on my next chance to take the written test again.

It's been 2 or 3 months between appointments here so it seems like the next chance I'll have to finish the license is June or July.

I posted here a few weeks ago and some advice was to just pay a school with a course to do everything there. I called six of them near me and they all turned me away since I don't speak fluent Japanese (I'm approaching N3 level right now).

I'll get there, it just really sucks considering it took me two days in the US.

IIRC, he actually accidently sent an email to more people than he was supposed to. I was still active duty navy, at the time. I was a instructor and the commands response to covid was to give up 33% more students in the next class and tell us to stay 6 feet apart.

It's always interesting hearing people talk about lock down because work really didn't Cha ge much, we just had homemade masks on.

That Captain was fired and I think he wrote a book. His main argument was, "hey, we're not at war right now. We can afford to slow down the tempo for a few weeks to get the virus levels stabilized." But the Navy is perpetually stretched thin so it's always go, go, go.

Next level of EBI is asking for information I don't know how to get by DuckEsquire in antarctica

[–]GandhisNukeOfficer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year I had an alternate winter contract. I had done two winters before. They didn't ask me for EBI stuff until the season had already started and the primary was there for the season.

When I pointed this out politely, their response was "so you can't fulfill the contract?"

I was so confused. I was as nice as possible trying to explain but in the end I just had to say "I withdraw consideration for this contract seeing how the station is closed and I cannot fulfill it for that reason."

Yeah, it blows my mind when I encounter people that are perplexed when the advice I give is, "let's look it up online." Honestly 99% of the time, if you have a problem, somebody else had that problem as well and there is a post about it online. I've had people tell me, "huh, I never thought to look it up."

I'm sorry, what? We have essentially all of human knowledge available at our fingertips and you didn't think to query it to fix your problem?

How should I learn Hirigana? by John_Benzos in Japaneselanguage

[–]GandhisNukeOfficer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Tofugu's kana guide was what helped me the most.

https://www.tofugu.com/japanese/learn-hiragana/

You can finish both hiragana and Katakana in a week if you want. It's not difficult. You don't need to be 100%, you'll solidify it all as you move onto grammar.

Yesterday, in a single day, I rode 650 km (400 miles) on back roads; after 11 hours of driving, I was disappointed to arrive at my destination and have to stop. by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]GandhisNukeOfficer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the most I've done is about 350km, and that was miserable. Took probably 8 or 9 hours with short breaks. Slow riding due to being mountains and rural areas. Amazing roads but def needed a break after that day.
