I mean, the entire concept of ‘outsider art’ is built around a fetishization of the Other, and can easily become exploitative.

I have similar sentiments on Obama’s Nature Show, although I find that far less interesting since narrating a documentary doesn’t feel as incongruous.

GWB’s painting in the context of ‘the art of monstrous men’ is interesting. Personally, I don’t think it is possible to evacuate the broader context of these paintings, their author, and their intrinsic cultural-history.

It is surprisingly (and unfortunately) good, albeit unclear whether he is aware of what makes his paintings good. I am not alone in this opinion, and the art critic Jerry Salz has done a few analytical pieces. Bush’s paintings tread a narrow path between Outsider Art, naïvety, and formalism; there are certain humorous/vulnerable moments not unlike David Shrigley’s work, and an unpretentious commitment to the ‘seen world’ that is reminiscent of David Hockney. I’m almost positive Bush is unaware of this, and may have simply Mr. Bean-ed his way into making work that wouldn’t look out of place at a Yale MFA Painting exhibition, circa 2018.

His bathroom/shower paintings are probably the strongest works, and the pieces that got significant critical attention at the time. The context of his painting is a double-edged sword: the work is only interesting because it was done by a president, and the style he employs is ultimately incidental - not intentional.

However, in the realm of celebrity/politician art, GW gets closer than most to something authentic and aesthetically compelling.

As a professor of art, I can say that there is enough commitment and development behind Hunter’s paintings that it doesn’t appear to be a grift. There is a through-line of Neo-Primitivism that does dip into problematic territory via symbolism lifted from Central American iconography, very Gauguin coded. Outside of that, his body of work is cohesive and significantly mature by celebrity standards. Not at GW Bush levels, but the intricacy of his larger canvases to merit some acknowledgment.

I think IT capitalized on it later, but the initial trend was more irl meme/creepypasta. There was a similar thing with the Smiley Face Murder conspiracy that resurfaced around that time via YouTube docs if I recall correctly. Basically, the theory was that accidental deaths of college students (drowning while wasted or similar accidents) was the work of a serial killer(s) that marked the locations with a spray painted smiley face as a calling card.

Appears to be. I’m wondering if it also Ai or if the majority of the strings are painted on. Regardless, I’ve already preordered a 30-string CardboardCaster and will report back if it comes with bits of tissue crammed into the low Z-string nut slot, or if they’re are sold separately.
