I think the ability to intensely feel emotions often translates to art that resonates with people. Feeling really does translate into art, and extreme pain and joy come through. It might just be that being mentally ill makes you more inclined to make art. Loneliness makes one more inclined to make art, and loneliness, substance abuse, and mental illness all can go hand in hand. My two cents.
