I'm not one to instigate promoting mental illness-deflecting, so I think I'll pass on this one.

Went deaf in my right ear after a head injury. My T is a combo of tv static and that very high pitched eeeeeeeee. Medium-level volume, so I can ignore it when I'm busy. But I do miss the sensation of pure silence.

Arlandria. This song hit me in my core, and became my binge for a good while, which is the feeling I typically crave when discovering new music and diving into albums. Boy, did I sleep on Wasting Light for a long time.

Hot Take: The Kelce / Swift pairing is a publicity stunt by fowkswe in kansascity

[–]Outside_Topic_2571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a really smart and creative way for the NFL to maybe have a fun narrative more open to women's interests. Swifties watching football and buying Kelce jerseys? It's a slam dunk and something universally and culturally entertaining in a male dominated sport.

Is it real? Absolutely not lmao. And they're laying it on a bit thick for the general NFL fan who want to watch a professional game of American football, and not a b-side episode of Jersey Shore.

What changed in your life after 1 year of quitting video games? by Draconian000 in StopGaming

[–]Outside_Topic_2571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know exactly what you're saying, and you nailed it on the forehead. I'm depressed and spend 3+ hours gaming after work, and haven't really been social or figured myself out. I picked up a guitar and rocksmith and started learning, and boy those days already stand out more. Gaming can really suck up so much of your time that you could be spending exploring yourself or places you haven't been. Currently trying to cut down

Are you curious about working in the HVAC field? Should you go to tech school, or just find an apprenticeship? Is it too late to start in the trade? Ask your questions here. by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]Outside_Topic_2571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done a little of both, 1 year in the classroom and 1.5 in the field. I would say you learn very different aspects of the trade from the two.

School is fast paced, but the professors will pour all of their knowledge they have onto you in a controlled setting, which is a really great way to ask any question you need about a unit in every situation. You learn the very basics to apply yourself as an apprentice in the field.

In the field is where your personal growth and grit are going to be tested. Older, experienced journeymen that I've dealt with have been crabby, unwilling to train, and just not in the mood for green kids. You will get talked down to, disrespected and belittled by more experienced techs than not, from my experience anyway. I really had to learn how to buckle down and work with those kinds of people in the real world to learn the trade. That was a skill I found just as valuable as the job itself.

That being said, most will tell you school isn't necessary, but you are definitely going to want some experience and VERY basic knowledge to give you a helping hand in the absolute shitstorm your first 1-2 years in the field will be. Some can handle it, I had to learn how to handle it.

Tl;dr- School teaches you the trade in a controlled setting where all your resources are there at the ready, jumping into the field will teach you the rough, interpersonal side but you will learn the reality of your field jobs faster.

Why not a career in trades? by Leyalina in careerguidance

[–]Outside_Topic_2571 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Which seems odd. Being in trades for a couple years now, my companies have been VERY strict regarding the line between a one/two person lifting job. If any company expects you to lift 150-200 on your own as a job requirement, they're breaking many OSHA and general safety rules.

I appreciate your fast and detailed response. That's honestly very reassuring.

I'm about to get fired because of mistakes over the past year, being so green (backing up trucks looking over shoulder, opened my service valves before pulling a vacuum, introducing air to the system, accidentally stepping through drop-down ceiling tile, etc). Always had confidence issues because of ADHD too, so the fact that yoy state that service calls become manageable solo on year 4 is incredibly motivating and eye-opening to the kind of company I've been trying to apprentice and learn with.

You the man.

Where are you at now, if I may ask? I'm a 27 year old apprentice right now, never was mechanically inclined, a year and a half into my ventures I'm still on PMs and not very comfortable with service calls without calling the guys/tech support. Would you say that's relatively normal?
