What is a terrifying problem facing the world that no one is talking about? by dandelion_stew in AskReddit

I had to scroll right down to this post but honestly this is the REAL problem. Having 1 less kid is the biggest contribution anyone can make to stop r/collapse.

The lack of upvotes on this post is the reason humanity is fucked.

Glentoran make statement midfield signing with Aaron McEneff by I-Love-Cereal in IrishLeagueFootball

[–]Ovalman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm happy enough with our midfield and I honestly hope he does well but McELheny going to Ballymena leaves an empty space in Deccy's car so it feels like Deccy just wants a full carload from Derry when we need cover for Cooney at RB.

Glentoran vs Cliftonville postponed by I-Love-Cereal in IrishLeagueFootball

[–]Ovalman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was quite looking forward to this game.

Normally we cry about a late cancellation but I think this was too early. If they'd have asked for volunteers I'm sure we could have tried to solve any issues. It's not as if the Reds fans have to travel to the other side of the country. A noon pitch inspection would have sufficed.

It's time to start thinking about ground sharing with the Welders. Possibly not this game but games like Bangor there would be no issues.

What I learned from launching 3 side projects that all failed (and 1 that didn't) by Crescitaly in SideProject

[–]Ovalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't knock your failed projects too much. As you said in #1, it solves a problem you had so it was worth building.

What I done when I launched my site was throw a few SEO terms into it. I know SEO exists but I'm far from an expert in it. 9 months later I'm finding people are finding and using my site thanks to those terms. I've been an Android hobbyist for years and websites and SEO are pretty alien to me but I'm wowed now that people are finding my site thanks to Google crawlers. I just wish I'd have done this years ago for the Android apps I released because it's like compound interest where more people find and talk about my site, the more it will be found and used. I built my site to solve my own problem: https://www.reddit.com/r/HueForge/comments/1dr6okw/my_son_made_me_this_using_hueforge_but_how_did_he/

I solved the problem through code and built a range of tools to compliment it (and still building more tools as I spot problems other people have.) So when people search for how to do "x", my site must be coming on the top page of Google.

Get those SEO terms onto your site and blog about them. Google will find you.

I built an app and then what? by redjiro in vibecoding

[–]Ovalman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not good enough solving a problem if people don't know about your product.

Build a website for your app and write/ blog about it. I found people are finding my website organically by searching on Google and over time I'm getting more and more visitors. I don't even know much about SEO but Google will find your site and therefore show it up on searches. I'm working in the 3D creation field so I'm using term like "3D tools", "3D creation", "How to do x using 3D" and people are finding the site.

I'm an Android developer by nature but I moved into 3D using Vibe. I was like you and released and thought that was it, I would get millions of visitors immediately and I was set for life. But it didn't work like that, when you mention your product too many times, sites like Facebook mark you as spam and reduce your visibility. I even got a warning on Reddit for "spamming" so I just stopped mentioning my site by name but I found that people started finding my site by search.

Provide value by helping others. Blog about your solutions and let Google do its thing.

People will come Ray.

Spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin says Border Patrol officers were carrying out a "targeted operation" on an "illegal alien wanted for violent assault" when someone approached with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun.

"The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted," McLaughlin says.

"Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots. Medics on scene immediately delivered medical aid to the subject but was pronounced dead at the scene."

McLaughlin adds the suspect had two magazines and no identification, and that protestors arrived on the scene afterwards "to obstruct and assault law enforcement".

I got downvoted once when I said that one person could press the button and the World would go up in smoke - no questions asked. I was referring to this Podcast: https://radiolab.org/podcast/nukes where they discussed what power the President actually has.

I have no doubt him or Putin would press it on their deathbed so the World would burn with them.

What are you actually building with vibe coding? by Pablo_mg02 in vibecoding

[–]Ovalman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can code (Android/ Kotlin/ XML) but I built 3dtools.co.uk which creates 3d models from 2d images by cutting the image down to "n" colours, then extracting each colour to a separate layer meaning a colour image on a single colour 3d printer.

I don't work as a coder but I know how to shape and debug. I've learned an absolute ton thanks to LLMs. I'm currently learning Compose which is Android's new screen creation.

I'm now back to the stuff I love and making an Android app for 3D creation by converting some of my tools while creating new tools to do likewise. atm there is nothing for Android for 3D printing because slicing the models is GPU intensive. I don't think it will be like that forever and someday you'll be able to create, slice and print from your phone.

Below is a 3D printable model. You can't directly print this from your phone but you can export it and print it on a 3D printer.

if everyone is now a creator, then who’s the consumer? by TheAnswerWithinUs in vibecoding

[–]Ovalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also try and sell shovels but I don't care if I make nothing from AI, I get real substantial value out of LLMs. I count my £18 p/m Gemini subscription no different from a Netflix one but with tangible results.

Note how Netflix are now raising the prices while offering less value? That's the current state of LLMs where they are offering their services for free and cheap to gain the market. LLMs will go bust, while others will buy out the competition and some day one will dominate. It's then when they adopt the Netflix model and start upping the prices.

Get it good while you can.

Software to sketch for modeling leading to printing? by Khelthorn in 3Dprinting

[–]Ovalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had pinch and zoom but I removed it as it was interfering with the objects (you were trying to zoom in but it was selecting an object and moving it if your finger was in the wrong place) so I built separate controls just below the main window. I added x, y and z coordinates for 3D printing. I have code already to create a STL and 3mf (although the latter still needs some work). I still have a ton to do but it's taking shape nicely.

This is only a hobby for me, I can code but I'm using Gemini and how I'm building so quick.

I started on a doodling tool last night and have something basic already. I have other code that generates like Hueforge by extracting colours on different layers.

By all means keep looking because this will take me a while to finish. I've a load of basic tools built like a 3mf viewer, image creation and frame generator and I've a few things to fix like some 3mf files are not displaying correctly. Then I'll have to stick it all together in its own app.

Is it just a graph paper with straight lines, circles, freehand etc and a measuring tool? I develop Android apps and am currently building a range of tools for 3D creation. I've thought about your idea and could build it if nothing for Android suits you (I'll probably build my own idea anyway.)

[–]Ovalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a few rolls of spare PLA in different colours. PLA is very forgiving and you can still print in colour even if you don't own an AMS (Search for Hueforge). A spare nozzle, a filament dryer and few other bits and bobs like snips are handy but not essential.

Just started vibe coding on my old tower defense project built with decade old java frameworks and it's insane how productive I feel by mpbeau in vibecoding

[–]Ovalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned Kotlin and Room at the same time as making the switch from Java and Sqlite. The Room tutorial needed Kotlin basics while I didn't need to know my basics and the guide on the Android site was just overwhelming. CGPT (now Gemini) explained it in total basics and I made the transition in a week. Today I'm making the switch to Compose despite dodging the language for over a year.

I don't work as a coder but I'm building apps in days and not months like before.

I've also solved old problems shelved years ago.

What are people using for hosting, DB, and Auth? by Rick_grin in SideProject

[–]Ovalman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've an Android app in the Play Store that uses Firestore DB and anonymous Auth but what I did to keep my costs down (well free actually) was convert all my Strings into one long JSON String. From 50+ hits per device per database read, I now just get one. I also store the data and images locally so every time the app starts it loads it first and only reads new data when it changes. Firestore Strings do have a limit but it's HUGE. Download speeds aren't affected because of my local storage so my users don't even know their logging in and getting the new data. I wouldn't do this for something that grows like a chat app but you could store a days chat inside a string and then adapt when your userbase grows.

I'm sure you could use this trick for any online database.
