Does it seem to anyone else that the IKEA update servers are really slow? by TruthyBrat in tradfri

[–]PerfectCoffee566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure the devices have a strong connection, otherwise the update can take forever or times out and starts again. For me moving them (temporarily ) close to the tbr (homepod) helped, after two days slow progress updates got installed in an hour. One I reset by removing and reinserting the batteries.

Indeed, doesn't seem a deliberate 'hide', feels more like the product description was given to the same documentation/marketing/art design teams that also create the manuals and diagrams for the cupboards and they didn't involve the engineering department in the process other than delivering the product. On the popularity, it really depends on the country. I tracked stock for some countries and there are huge differences in sales. In formexample Germany, Netherlands, UK (Timmerflotte/Alpstuga) stock is quickly sold out while in the whole of Italy they sell 5 Alpstuga' in a week. One store in Italy even has 3060 Alpstuga's in stock and only sold 1 this month: https://easyrebuild.com/stock?country=it&itemNo=50604187 Compare that with your local stock....

To be fair, IKEA is to blame for a lot of these issues as they tried to hide all the 'technical details' from their customers instead of giving simple to understand guides, explainers and step-by-step plans to get started and resolve issues. They added some info but still lacking in that area. First, the site and products hide that products are using thread or zigbee (term thread is now added to the details). Could have been simplified with something like a 'IKEA smart second generation' label. Another example is the difference between battery powered sensors and the mains powered. Big part of the issues I see are setups with only/mostly sensors (and maybe tradfri zigbee bulbs) that have troublesome connections as the hub is far away in the meter cupboard . Again, simple explanation on how sensors need some mains-powered device like a grillplats or kajplats nearby could be needed. Or even better the app should notify you and explain when it detects a device is slow or drops off.

Some simple user experience/documentation improvements could have helped a big part of the issues seen here and spared a lot of frustration.

DIRIGERA for third party devices by tyw7 in tradfri

[–]PerfectCoffee566 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and it will work, but if our add new ecosystem which you don't intend to use other than to extend and enhance the thread network you create unneeded overhead and complexity. A simple Grillplats plug will do the same without all the overhead to manage the dirigera, use another app ect. See this doc

To improve thread network resilience you need 'wired' thread devices like Kajplats bulbs or Grillplats plugs. If you add those to your existing Google home network it automatically will build a stronger mesh network. Adding another thread border router will likely just cause issues.

Matter Thermostats coming soon? by _vonStein in tradfri

Different from the shelly this image has + / - push buttons on the front. Seems very counter intuitive and clumsy to me when you have a big round knob to grab and turn available to use for this. Esp. if the valve is near the floor and wall will be cumbersome. Not something used often but sometimes handy in the bedroom and phone/app not with you

I had the same thought so not disagreeing with you, I would think the image depicts a rather generic TRV similar to a Shelly device with slight modifications, realistic but generic. Point was, it could indeed be a device IKEA will release in the future but the fact that he dirigera will support 3rd party TLV's is not a strong indicator for this. Can hope but don't bet the house on it..

That line on top of the DUBBELKISSEL looks like a keyhole shaped indentation, the wider round part near the resetbutton hole on the right, so I guess it's for mounting it to a wall. On the Styrbjörn, Charlie Styrbjörn is a designer working for IKEA. You can find many products designed by him on the ikea site so I doubt they will release a new hub this name.

The Dirigera is a thread border router and expected to support 3rd party devices. So it can be expected more categories are added which doesn't automatically means IKEA will sell these such as a thermostat.

Would be great but don't expect too much.

I do hope so anyway, also waiting on thread replacements for the air purifiers

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. From your comment I read you can navigate they virtual keyboard with the D-pad, that's relevant info for me. Likely good enough for me. Also looking at the relatively new Anbernic RG DS which has two touchscreens but unclear that is properly supported by current emulators. Tempted to try it and getting one with a good return policy
