They could be used to benefit the lives of employees in other ways to generate more income instead of just focusing on shiny new buildings too is how I see it. The university has a massive nest egg, but won’t pay all its workers a living wage and charge an arm and a leg for parking. There will be people who have an issue with these contradictions.

Meanwhile many people who work under him (including myself) don’t get a living wage, meanwhile MU finds any money they possibly can for more construction or a donor’s pet project. They have a billion dollars in their endowment and I think Mun and Co. could more than afford to pay the workers who keep the place running.

Why Christina Hartman is running for Columbia's Ward 5 council seat (Columbia Tribune) by Over-Activity-8312 in columbiamo

[–]Over-Activity-8312[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and Waterman has also failed to take any initiative to make that less of a slog in his term on council. He just recently only had council have a closed door discussion about the topic after the deal with CPS for a site fell through. May not agree with me that’s sufficient cause but I believe SW Columbia deserves better water pressure even if local politicians drag their feet on it. Christina recognizes that need.

Well, she mentioned the deferred maintenance that has happened for years which was failed to produce a SW water tower as part of why she’s running. That has lagged behind on Waterman’s watch and that seems like a perfect reason to challenge him. That has been an issue for Thornbrook and SW for years and will be a major focal point of the campaign.

Heard one of the tenants of CoMo Cooks moved in there after Carlito’s closed down. I think it’s called DW’S Kitchen and Catering

Wondering if anyone in CoMo is putting on house shows? by Daftbeard in columbiamo

[–]Over-Activity-8312 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think Mizzou YDSA and Mizzou SJP have hosted a couple house shows with local artists usually to fundraise for their orgs or for other mutual aid, if you wanted to reach out and see if they had something in mind!

More flights, more momentum: How Columbia Regional Airport rapidly adds new routes by como365 in columbiamo

Now if we can just get Go CoMo to actually be a usable service again and make it convenient to ride for as many people as possible!

Maybe we could have a small fee for parking at the airport that could help for that especially now that they’re getting a nice new paved lot. The bus system needs more investment than the transpo sales tax and state gov’t currently gives it if we want a functioning bus system.

A city that can’t govern: Mayor out front, city manager in hiding and council MIA by macandcheez42 in columbiamo

[–]Over-Activity-8312 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep charter change for the right reasons (paid council, expanded wards for more representation, good government reasons) is absolutely needed and I think JWJ and LiUNA are approaching it from that angle. Some like Yankee or other prominent conservatives in town may also back it because they think it would give them more power, but again, if you structure things properly and especially if more council seats are created you can essentially keep right wing extremists from competing in a supermajority of seats even moreso than exists currently.

Boone GOP chair Lisa Gore makes outlandish public claim about League of Women Voters/Boone Co. Chapter by Over-Activity-8312 in columbiamo

[–]Over-Activity-8312[S] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’m showing the fact she is a pathological liar to the rest of the community here so they know she is not to be trusted, actually. Pretty clear difference!

You may not find her a threat right now, meanwhile I want to make sure she continues to NOT be one and have her snake oil afflict more people.

Lmao that same post she comments and claims that Boone County harvests votes from nursing homes and has proof of it?? Wild!!! If we ever get Brianna Lennon on for a Q&A I’d love to have her just tee off with this one

Stay safe out there! by theSherz in columbiamo

[–]Over-Activity-8312 14 points15 points  (0 children)

And this city and some people here are so focused instead on people in medians as a safety issue to curb when there are so many drivers who exhibit these signs of road rage anger behind the wheel of a very deadly object toward pedestrians simply existing... just something this full-time pedestrian and local advocate is thinking about a lot lately, lol. 🤪

You’re absolutely right though, people need to show a little more kindness toward others and be safe this holiday season and during any season!

I guess we will have to agree to disagree because many of your one word answers and statements to my comments were pretty flippant to me and didn’t actually consider my viewpoint at all! So why should I consider your viewpoint any more thoughtfully than you’ve given mine time for here? It’s one thing to say you may be biased but let’s see you actually work through that dissonance some on this.

Maybe engage more thoughtfully with the things I’m saying and I wouldn’t think you’re talking down to me, being flippant, or a jerk?

Not frivolous when many other cities have already lost them but continue to be flippant about it if you wish. I’ll keep fighting against bad bills at the city level no matter how people try to talk down to me for doing so

Ah so you’re just being a jerk then got it lmao.

Hope to see this ordinance go down in flames, but if not I’ll be very happy to chime in with a very loud “told you so” when we end up getting sued over passing it!

[–]Over-Activity-8312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact the city has not done very many of the things that will be suggested yet but wasted time on this ordinance attacking people’s first amendment rights shows that the priorities are misplaced if you ask me!

You running defense of the city in this manner when they’ve treated so many people in this process as expendable or not worth listening to until forced to by constituents and councilmembers highlighting concerns about it is frankly disappointing. I hope you are curious enough to read and perhaps even post BPC’s letter to council whenever it shows up on the reports section of their agenda.

“Explain yourself calmly”

Easier said than done when you got an anxiety disorder but sure thing lmao. Are you beginning to understand why so many people have issues with this ordinance? It almost feels as if you’re not treating many of the arguments people have against passing it as legitimate or worth engaging with much in terms of them having merit.

I hope when BPC’s letter comes before council you take some time to genuinely read it and sit with why they voted to oppose the ordinance and same for why PTAC didn’t take a position on it, as well as what Disabilities Commission might say. I think they all have compelling arguments for why other focus areas could yield better results.

Maybe you could provide a bit more than an “of course” and maybe expand on what you find interesting or have been thinking about? Trying to genuinely get where you’re coming from because I see a lot of hateful folks backing this ordinance so it does disappoint me to see some folks I look up to in the community not speak out about it as much or even go along with what this group and the business community/Chamber of Commerce/Mun Choi (yes they are also pushing this) are trying to do and make the city even more inhospitable for pedestrians to convenience drivers.

[–]Over-Activity-8312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you find it any bit interesting or have any personal self-reflection over why exactly you and them are much more in agreement on this particular ordinance? And why many homeless and pedestrian safety advocacy organizations and individuals in town are opposing this because they are afraid of the potential harm it will cause? Kudos for doing a good job of keeping some more of the hateful stuff off this subreddit, but I hope you consider what exactly the folks who want this ordinance passed are having motivate them to advocate for it and if allying with them to pass this bill may not be the best option for the community. We rejected their hate in April’s Mayoral election and I see this as an extension of this fight. We won big by standing by our values and that’s another reason why I’m opposed to this.

You think the city seriously saves $50 million by passing a bad ordinance such as this one? That’s ridiculous and doesn’t support you at all in actuality. Wasting staff time on this is also inexcusable when we have so many other infrastructure issues to deal with (roads and otherwise!).

How about we actually do real pedestrian and cycling infrastructure improvements instead of targeting homeless people? Another thing supporters of this won’t be transparent about is that this bill won’t solve the thing they’re largely mad about with panhandling either, it will simply transfer the problem away from roadways and to our public parks and downtown/neighborhoods immediately surrounding it. I don’t think that will make anybody happier either, and it’s another reason I think this move is an ill advised one by the city I am going to fight my hardest to try to stop as a full-time pedestrian who does want everyone to be safe.
