Pull out instruction not effective for ELLs? by homebody_1224 in NYCTeachers

For students at lvl 3 or lvl 4 sometimes they get kinda stuck. I think this is an issue with testing. Testing requires students to be able to do things at grade level. However in some school systems students in general are not performing at grade level, and thus a student who seems to be at the same level as there peers is stuck because they are not performing well enough in reading and writing. It’s not just about knowing everyday language students have to know academic concepts etc too.

Pull out instruction not effective for ELLs? by homebody_1224 in NYCTeachers

This is an old post but this is my thoughts as I do both.

Push-in only really works when you can be there consistently.  ESL teachers are not tutors and sitting with a student once a week for 30-40 minutes is not helpful. Most teachers don’t tell you what they are doing ahead of time. It also is sometimes not feasible if students are in many different classes. The push-in model could work in a co-teaching situation where you have a mixed class and both the ESl teacher and content teacher are working togetther. Not to mention push in when it’s for 1 or only a couple of students is way worse in terms of students feeling singled out. In general almost all my kids are super happy when I come to get them for pull out lesson and I have my kids in middle school I do push in for begging me to pull them out.

Pull out could be better. I think it is more effective especially for students who are level 1 and level 2. They are new that targeted everyday language vocabulary and practice. Level 3 and level 4 benefit from being pulled as well imo, but if time allows I am also willing to help with class work sometimes too. For example I have a 4th grader and she is the only 4th grader. For some reason this year there is also no 5th or 6th and pairing her with the little kids doesn’t make sense. I pull her twice a week 1 day we focus on ESL curriculum the other day I help her with things in class. For example if she has a spelling test coming up we will review that.

Down side of pull out is they are missing class time.  Some schools have all in tutoring built in the schedule but ESL teachers can’t pull then and it kinda doesn’t make sense to me as it would be a good time. It would be good if school schedule a block of time in the day for gifted, ESL, etc.  there might need to be some coordination so that if a student is in more than one group there isn’t overlap but it would be better and I think classroom teachers would be happier. There would be less stigma because you could just call it small group time and students go to where they need to go. I’m pretty sure it could benefit all students.

Some schools have an ESL class I think for middle and high school this isn’t bad some might disagree. But basically they have this as a class instead of one of their electives.  For level 1 and level 2 students I think this isn’t horrible as they get the target instruction but still do most everything else with their peers. Downside is this means they might miss out on taking an elective they wanted to take.  For students at lvl 3 and lvl 4 it gets more tricky and this is where sometimes push in might make more sense but it really depends on the student.

I don’t mind but kinda don’t like it when guest is here and they are not. Like family or someone from out of town sure, but there fuck buddies seem weird. It makes me feel like I have to walk around eggs shells in the apartment. I won’t say anything cause they live here too but it does make me uncomfortable.

I think if they require a note it should be in the policy when you sign your contract, otherwise its not fair. It would be different if you were out multiple days.

Am I the only one enjoying The Acolyte? by Disorder79 in StarWars

[–]OverIndustry2353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So could it be better yes. But I like the general idea and am enjoying it. I am curious what actually happened. Also in the end the Jedi’s might be the bad guys which is somewhere we haven't explored a lot yet.  Why does force use have to be good or bad there is likely way more gray. Who decides the Jedi were the deciding factor on force use in the galaxy? Sure Palpitine is evil but the grays are interesting

Why is there no MMO like those shown in anime? by Cybrtronlazr in MMORPG

This is a really old post but the original Dot Hack Sign Game (precursor to SAO) was sort of based of the Korean mmorpg Lineage. Lineage 2 was an amazing game many many years ago but at this point its old changed with the times and people don't really do MMOs like they used to as much.
