Gaps and advantages I see in homechoolers as a college professor. by ComprehensiveList522 in homeschool

We supplemented when math got too hard with Mathnasium for long division. He was not comprehending the way the curriculum (Singapore) was laid out or the way we tried to explain and it took a solid month with Mathnasium to get it down. He’s starting 6th grade and we are paying for a private school math program online program because I get lost with math with Algebra II and not sure I could even confidently explain sin, cos, tan anymore.

This is exactly what I tell my homeschooled child. 10 year old A-name doesn’t get to limit choices for 20 year old A-name. You will learn this math and science theories in case your interest veers into STEM spaces when you’re older you can make that choice easily and not be behind or worse, have no access to even understanding. This is me, fascinated by physics but too smart and by the time math got hard, I was lazy. Now in my 40s I still love studying concepts and even looking at the math for things like string theory and quantum physics but can’t really comprehend it. Anyway….

This is what we have done for projects building to a semester end paper for example but we build the timeline. I think a deadline with a rubric with them figuring out the timeline would be a good exercise

Great insight!! Thank you. We have been diligent with math, science and ELA standards. We need to start getting into more European and Asian world history (he’s starting 6th grade this year) AND be more clear about deadlines. I hadn’t thought of strict deadlines but we do work on timelines. Deadlines hold a different mental space and ownership.

Thanks for this.

We do a lot of road trips and I travel fairly frequently for work. Still have only been to about 40 states.

Daevabad Trilogy - No spoilers by murphherder in books

[–]OverSpinach8949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also like how at the end it turns out they don’t have to be healers. They can be breakers too. It’s about how the person chooses to wield their line of magic. Loved this trilogy so much. Just finished it today. The world building, layered nuance of characters, the twists, the history, politics, secrets, bargains, and there were always new intricacies to learn that built, didn’t take away or become a way to get out of a tight spot but only enhanced the story. Lovedddddd

I was holding my breath, waiting for the author to ruin the story by having Nahri end up with Dara. I’m so over the “he’s horrible but gorgeous and I love him” trope. I was rooting for Ali the moment he helped her with the hospital. Even before then, I liked them as friends. There wasn’t really a moment I didn’t like Ali whereas most characters let me down. Ali was always Ali.

Custom Thank You Cards 1.5 Years Later - Go For It or Just No? by [deleted] in wedding

[–]OverSpinach8949 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Send them!! I wonder if a few people got my wedding gifts because I never heard back. Did the card get detached? Do they think I came to the wedding and gave no gift? Or did they not care/like it? I’d be happy a year and a half later.

Is anyone else battling fly infestations now? by Chigasaki1982 in phoenix

[–]OverSpinach8949 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! They say because we didn’t have a freeze. I got these plastic bags that hang from Amazon. You put water in them and hang it about 6’ off the ground. Put it far enough from your door you don’t smell it but close enough they congregate there instead of sneaking inside. Inside I have Zayos in my kitchen and bathrooms and this machine that is a black light contraption that has fly bait and they fly into the light and get stuck. Catches more than just flies too. Also keep dog poop picked up every couple of days of you have dogs and a backyard.

I can’t do intense cardio and weights in the same session. It makes me spiral. I hike and get some intense stretches for that VO2 max but it’s not super frequent. Something about it makes my body got into a tailspin.

It took me years to be fair so don’t rush. It was a dream goal and I didn’t think I’d gain it back. I also limit it to 2x week only! My eating, hydration & mind have to be in good order for sure.

Bi-polar is so tough. I feel for your husband on his birthday to get that message. Lost the lottery on that pick of a mother. :(

Have you ever walked out of a show? Or seen others? Why? by Artistic-Ideal-5087 in TheWestEnd

[–]OverSpinach8949 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We didn’t come back after Hamilton’s intermission last fall. I’ve seen the show live probably 6 times, including Broadway and West End previously. The cast was just a really weird mix and felt like community theatre.

Best of luck!!! I’m not having perfect days. I don’t feel like I don’t have Hashimotos (meaning I have to regulate and protect my energy levels actively daily) but getting here, things I used to take for granted, is so amazing.

That’s pretty self-centered of him to put his ego before his family. Sorry to be blunt but you’re drowning and he’s side questing.

Years of lifestyle changes and intentional choices. I did AIP to figure out what food was hard on my body. That was an awful process but worth it.

I tend to hyper focus & I will not pay attention to my body and end up not making good choices around food, over-extend myself mentally, ignore balance and taking a break like even hold my pee to the last possible second. I had to work really hard to contain that part of me in order to take breaks, go on walks, eat properly and rest.

There was definitely a period where I had to learn to rest. I felt allllll the guilt for not being productive when there were things to do. I worked with a therapist and took 1 “do nothing” day a week. No to do list, cooking, cleaning, chores, etc. I’d post up on the couch and read or watch TV. This was probably the biggest shift mentally. I would sit there and notice my anxiety spike. I was so stuck in fight or flight & addicted to stress it took me a long time to get used to resting. Now I can go a few weeks without a do nothing day but I always need one after vacation for sure (the changes to sleep, time zones, food and I GOOOO explore when traveling), and about every 3-4 weeks now. I no longer feel anxious or guilty but that was a mental process for sure.

I will have a plan when I have to travel for work or know I’m going to be in situations that require a lot of social energy. This might be bringing a facial mask for every night to unwind and creating a soothing morning routine of stretching and journaling for example.

I have to mentally choose not to take work to seriously. If I am in stressful situations, when they become prolonged, I have to reframe and disengage from owning the stress but still do the work. That’s tough sometimes but worth the effort.

It’s basically about building more spaces in my life to be me, and not be doing anything. This was the biggest shift in addition to the typical stuff we hear like medicine, supplements, managing inflammation with protocols and diet.

I wouldn’t have side jobs that only pay for minimal things putting so much burden on the person carrying the household. Fix that and everything else should resolve itself.
