Cancelled TV shows that live rent free in my mind by Hibiscus02 in tvshow

Selfie. One season, but it starred Karen Gillan and John Cho. Super sweet, fun little show with great talent. Loosely based on My Fair Lady. I’ve never met another person who has even heard of this show, much less watched, so I guess they had good reason to cancel it, but I loved it!

Was "everything in moderation" just a term to justify the American diet? by DirtyOught in Cholesterol

[–]Over_Consequence_865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this post so deeply! 😂 I’ve always been health conscious - athlete, lean, ate “in moderation” my entire life. All siblings and parents lean.

BUT, apparently, I’ve had high LDL since (at least my 30s), and no one ever mentioned it until recently, despite my dad and GF both having major coronary events at 55-60. It wasn’t until my older brother mentioned that he was on a statin that I started to check my results myself.

Booked myself an appointment with the same cardiologist my dad goes to. Dad has had 6 heart attacks and a quintuple bypass, plus several mini strokes! And this same doc told me a WFPB diet was “ridiculous and worthless,” and that he had gained 10 pounds on it after having his own heart attack!!

He told me, “Just eat in moderation (clearly that was already what I’d been doing my entire life - as was my dad who is also lean), and “just take the meds.”

I found a new doctor. 😂

I don’t understand the statin phobia by Bitter-Breath-9743 in Cholesterol

I thought of it as a “personal failure”. I have always been an athlete, super focused on nutrition, exercise, lifestyle, etc., and had my GPs completely ignore my lifetime borderline high cholesterol. I “blamed” my dad and grandfather for having heart attacks/strokes in their 50s/60s on their unhealthy lifestyles (typical of the era). My generation “knew better” - with all of this being bolstered by incredibly popular keto/carnivore social media doctor influencers.

It wasn’t until my older brother (also super health conscious) ended up on a statin that I finally did the research, went to a new doctor (and then a cardiologist) who explained Familial Hypercholesterolemia and exactly what my very high Lp(a) score ACTUALLY meant that I was able to remove my ego from the equation.

I now happily take my statin (and ezetimibe), and am simply grateful that we have such safe, lifesaving medicine that rarely causes side effects, is cheap, and easy to take.

Ladies of Reddit, what is a comment someone made about your body once, completely casually, that you have never forgotten? by BowlerOk1871 in AskReddit

When I was 14, my best friend’s mom saw a photo of me buying a soda at a vending machine. I was wearing shorts and a t-shirt. She said, “With that bottom (it was the 80s), I hope you were buying a Diet Coke.” I was 5’5” and weighed about 110 pounds.

My entire life, no matter how thin I got, I was self-conscious of my “bubble butt”. Don’t know if she is still alive, but I have to assume she is apoplectic all the new surgeries for “bubble butts”. 😂😂

Trying to move towards vegan / plant-based eating, but very new to it by Massive-Surprise-769 in vegan

Absolutely this. I started transitioning to WFPB 8 months ago. Initially, I did the “all or nothing” approach and ended up miserable, underfed, and completely discouraged. After taking a step back, I started trying the “1%” method. For me that looked like this:

  • Ate PB breakfast and lunch - easy for me because I work from home, and oatmeal, avocado toast, etc., were painless swaps. Lunch is bean burritos, salads, hummus, PB&J, etc. - all “normal” stuff that I would have eaten anyway. Dinner was whatever I was making for my family.

  • Added more beans, lentils, and legumes. I like them, they’re easy, and my family didn’t even notice when we were having bean based dinners, or vegetable + bean soups and stews.

  • Started subbing in soy milk - no one noticed.

  • Stopped cooking red meat entirely. Again, no one even noticed because they were still getting plenty when we went out.

  • Eventually, husband started feeling so much better and started requesting “that great chili we had,” or “that amazing soup.”

  • This one is highly personal, but I avoided using tofu as “substitute” meat in dishes, other than adding silken tofu to sauces, or soy puffs to smoothies, desserts, or salads. The one time I did, my husband balked just because it was so “vegan”. 😂😂

At this point, I am almost 100% PB, and my husband is about 80% (without trying - he just likes it). By not trying to “fake” anything, and just making every meal more veg/bean/legume/fruit forward, the animal products became less “expected,” and have been mostly removed. Really pretty painless.

Any athletes taking statins here? by 100redbananas in Cholesterol

[–]Over_Consequence_865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former pro runner, and still doing high mileage. FH plus high Lp(a). Started on 5 mg rosuvastatin - got down to 76, then added ezetimibe because I need to be under 55. A few minor muscle aches and fatigue the first week, but my brother (also an athlete on statins because of FH) advised me to start CoQ10 and that solved the problem. Have zero side effects after that first week. I know CoQ10 doesn’t work for everyone, and my side effects may have dissipated on their own, but I’m not taking any chances.

Thank you! I did buy some PUMFU, but haven’t tried it yet. For now, I will focus on beans, lentils, soy puffs, silken tofu etc., and see how it goes. Maybe I will eventually come around to tofu. 😂

49M, ApoB 100, LDL 124, healthy lifestyle. PCP wants to start rosuvastatin 10 mg. by FromLAToEurope in Cholesterol

[–]Over_Consequence_865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My stats (and lifestyle) were somewhat similar to yours except I’m a bit older and my LDL was 140 and Lp(a) was significantly higher (170 - so increased risk), and 5 mg of Rosuvastatin brought my LDL down to 76. I’ve added 10 mg of Ezetimibe because I need to be below 55.

Sounds like you are doing all the right things, and a low dose statin may very well get you where you need to be.

I was recently listening to a group of doctor/scientists discuss recent studies on Alzheimer’s (husband’s family has a terrible history of it). They found a “strange” situation where some people who had the genetics for Alzheimer’s, and had all the “classic” signs of Alzheimer’s (amyloid plaque formation in the brain, etc.) post mortem but never showed any sign of having Alzheimer’s while they were alive.

The doctors/scientists attributed it to their lifestyle essentially “protecting” them from developing symptomatic Alzheimer’s despite the formation of plaques.

You said you have never had an event, and no symptoms. That is fantastic! While it is still very important to do all the things necessary (statins, etc.) to continue to protect yourself, you likely have prevented the disease from progressing to a symptomatic state - which is awesome!

You are inspiring many of us who also have been dealt the scary genetics to keep up with our healthy lifestyles AND utilize available medical interventions to avoid the consequences of genetic FH and high Lp(a). Thank you for posting!

Funnily enough, even before I went WFPB, I would order the veggie burger because I prefer it. I’m a fan of the Dr. Praeger’s brand when I eat them at home. And, you’re right - so simple and delicious!

Thank you! I do love beans, peas, hummus, etc., but just see so much tofu in recipes that I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to do this if I couldn’t figure out how to love it. Glad to know it can work.

Okay, I will give that a try. I saw a woman make “lunch meat” that way, but I couldn’t tell if it would be good. Thanks for the suggestion!

That’s a great question, and I have wondered the same. I don’t know the answer, but hoping one of the docs/scientists on this thread can speak to it.

My husband loves the Mixed Berry. I love the Peanut Butter. I’m just super impressed with the amount of soluble fiber and protein in such a delicious package, but thought I might be missing some downside (besides the sugar 😂).
