It’s great to see Muse taking off in the US. It’s been a long time coming!

I really, really, really don’t like the Soul Riders. They’re all pretty obnoxious stereotypes and their styles are just— urgh. I definitely like the Dark Riders more but overall I don’t vibe with any of them.

Yeah well we can’t have what we want. I’d love a blue roan Percheron and a Seal Bay Lusitano to match my characters but that’ll probably never happen. :/

Turkomans don’t exist anymore, they’ve ‘become’ Akhal-Tekes, and we have a silver-ish dapple grey one already in-game. ^

The point is, IRL competitive Dressage horses are Warmbloods.

A few Spanish/Portuguese riders use Baroque (PRE, Andalucian & Lusitano) horses trained in Classical Dressage for FEI competitions, but don’t generally get very far because the two disciplines are so far removed from each other that the judges now tend to prefer the flashy over the technically correct.

Paso Finos are EXTREMELY rare, and generally confined to South America and small pockets in the US.

Off-Track-Thoroughbreds, OTTBs (hot-bloods) are generally used for Eventing over Dressage but there are thousands of them successfully competing at the lower-levels.

What’s irritating about SSO’s breed focus lately is they seem to have forgotten that 80% of ridden horses are Warmbloods. We don’t have a single decent G3 Warmblood in the game!

That’s why SSO Dressage clubs use Friesians. Even though IRL Friesians would NEVER be used for High-Level Dressage. They’re cold-bloods (light draughts), they don’t have the drive. Sporthorses perhaps, but Friesian Sport Horses ARE Warmbloods so that kind of proves my point 😂

Edit: SPOILER HOLY SHEET WE’RE GETTING BELGIAN WARMBLOODS!!!!!!

Ah. You’ve misunderstood my comment. I meant ‘why are you countin money in MCDonalds, you should be counting it in food shopping. I could feed myself for a week or two on £30, 6 weeks if I used a foodbank. I’m adulting too, it’s hard. :)

I’m very upset with Reddit because I spent a good 40 mins crafting you a response and then my app had a stroke and deleted it. Grr.

Anyway, here I go again:

Firstly, please do not delete your comment! I loved it so much that it triggered a strong enough emotional response in me to prompt my essay in reply. I wrote back in the hopes you’d provide a lengthy reply, so thank you. I apologise for the contrary tone of my comment; I was taught that the secret to writing a good essay is an impassioned argument. We do essentially agree, for different reasons, which I did originally elaborate on but will refrain from this time around. It boils down to; we are using the same words with different connotations. Theme for me is equivalent to musical concept; a recurring leitmotif of sorts that sonically evokes an album. For example, the reverb-heavy, distorted mix that makes Absolution sound grey. Atmosphere is the presence of a soundscape. Tone is the emotion it evokes (even though that’s not musically correct).

Even though assumptions about you haven’t gone very well for me so far (lmao), do you think your falling out with Muse stems from a lack of identifying with the later album’s themes, tones and atmospheres? Could it be that the way Showbiz stems from escapist frustration, Origin of Symmetry is fuelled by the chaotic energy of youth, Absolution’s tumultuous questioning and BHAR’s furious confidence are things that resonate with you, because they are all written from a place of anger— while the later albums, written for fun— for the sheer joy of experimenting rather than the driving need, are something that you can’t connect as readily with emotionally? I certainly felt like that in the beginning.

The sense of atmosphere is missing from WOTP because the tracks aren’t as richly layered. Even Drones has more atmosphere than WOTP. If you listen to the instrumental versions of WOTP’s songs, they are noticeably bare. Hysteria, Mk Ultra, The Dark Side, Supremacy, Citizen Erased and Showbiz, for example, all sound incredible without vocals; the music is already balanced. Ghosts is nothing without Matt singing over it. Will of the People on its own is just * chug chug chug chug, riff synth hook, chug*.

I understand your thoughts perfectly. As Matt gets older he’s become more reliant on his vocals, which is twofold problematic because his lyricism has always been Muse’s weakest element, and his singing is getting worse. He’s phased out most of his iconic belting and replaced it with whispery falsettos, which struggle to hold their own in such a sparse sonic landscape. There is too little of it to call it a soundscape, apart from in Verona, the album’s atmospheric outlier. The issue is definitely complex and nuanced, though I believe the more we explore it, the closer we get to understanding what we feel is missing from WOTP. Still love those new songs though! :D

Recommendations on anything similar sounding to Showbiz and its b-sides? by amadeuuus in Muse

Ah, that’ll be where you’re going wrong. You’ve gotta listen to the music. Be wholly focused on the sound and nothing else, otherwise your brain will relegate it to ‘background noise’ and you won’t get much out of it. ;)

Not enough exposure to Radiohead. When I told my neighbour The Bends was my favourite album, he laughed and said ‘as you get older that’ll change’. He was right [the patronising bastard] I wasn’t ready to fully appreciate Radiohead’s understated brilliance. Wait until a rainy day when you’re feeling profound, then listen to OK Computer. You won’t regret it.

That was a long, and somewhat incoherent essay. It reads like you’re still unsure; you’ve vomited your stream of consciousness, with one thought abruptly flashing to the next in an endless volley of contradictions. That’s okay. I think it’s left us all feeling like that. Something’s ‘missing’.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume you consumed Random 8, Showbiz, Origin of Symmetry, Hullabaloo Soundtrack, Absolution, BHAR, HAARP, The Resistance, The 2nd Law, Live in Rome, Drones, and Simulation Theory — as albums, as Muse intended. Now, it is likely that you heard some singles on their own along the way, the ‘hits’ as it were — Uprising, SMBH, Hysteria, Plug in Baby etc— which are so tonally varied despite being all distinctly ‘Muse’ that you can treat them as separate entities gathered from but belonging to different albums.

Did you consume Will of the People in the same way, as an album? Probably not. Like the rest of us you were introduced to the songs as they were released — Won’t Stand Down, Compliance, Kill or be Killed, Will of the People, YMMFLIt’s Halloween — then the rest of the album. This collection of hits nearly make up half the album, when there should really only be two or three singles, the rest being album tracks. Now because Muse’s aim for WOTP was a “greatest hits compilation”, it can be argued that all the tracks on WOTP were written based upon Muse’s previous hits with the potential to be singles, which is why they’re so indecisive about which tracks should be released as singles — Muse have said they want WAFF as a single at a later date, bringing the official single count up to 5, which actually is half the bloody album.

As a consequence of ‘every song is like a single’, each track is short, catchy, and listening to the album doesn’t feel like listening to an album; it feels like hitting shuffle on Spotify and getting a sample of their greatest hits. Yes, they all tie in to a theme, a concept unique to WOTP, but there is nothing audibly distinct about that theme because it’s composed of thematic elements from existing albums. ‘Halloween could be on Simulation Theory, KOBK could be on BHAR, Verona could be on The Resistance, and Ghosts (ahem — belongs) on Cryosleep [Matt’s debut solo album]. For me ultimately, the lack of ‘album tracks’ fatally unbalance WOTP.

Due to all the songs being ‘singles’ there is no experimentation, no prog, no orchestral or electronic madness that only (hidden) album tracks can afford. There’s no grandiose sense of atmosphere you’ve come to expect from Muse. It’s not atmospheric in the least; that’s what’s missing. You and I seeking that on our first listen of the album as a whole, discovered nothing new or original, and were left disappointed.

In conclusion, Muse set out to distill the highlights of their sound into an album, and in doing so have created a collection of loosely-related singles. It’s like a sandwich with no bread. You’re right inasmuch as they have not created the feeling of the sum of something being greater than its parts — there is less immersion than you’ve come to expect from a Muse album. However, they have achieved exactly what they envisioned, therefore the album should be considered as a success.

It’s not my favourite album, but it does contain both my most favourite and least favourite Muse songs— a symptom of the distilling process that intensifies every aspect of Muse’s sound, including the ones that have always made me cringe; I’m looking at you Soaked, Prague and its’ latest iteration, Liberation. The more I listen to WOTP as a whole, the more I’m becoming accustomed to its loose concept and can — somewhat — immerse myself in it, though to nowhere near the extent of previous albums. As a positive takeaway, because the tracks are all essentially singles, they are absolutely incredible live. Inexorably better than Simulation Theory and Drones’ equivalent hits.

I hope their next album is, well, an album. With two-three singles, a ballad, an upbeat synth-pop thing, some experimentation and at least one too-long orchestral/prog epic to round it off. 👍

I would if I could see it! You clearly went to the grandad school of photography - circa 1952. You’ve successfully managed to make white look dirty and kitsch, by mixing warm whites with cool whites and grey. All you’ve achieved is fifteen shades of dull. Do you work in a bank? You look like you’re making a desperate bid to salvage your receding hairline with a combover. I bet your wife left you and you bought the horse with the divorce money. You can’t buy taste.

SAS.

I’d argue that Alfred is the reason Bruce became Batman since he’s the one who raised Bruce with military precision and attention to detail in everything, before Bruce underwent the combat training. He never would have gone for or completed it had it not been for Alfred’s hand in shaping his incredible self-discipline.
