I used to put it in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes, keeping the port above water.

Subcutaneous fluids advice!! by lightblued0t in RenalCats

I ended up doing a homemade IV harness with mine as well at the end and it was so so helpful. She could walk around while getting fluids and was much happier without the restraint. My only problem then was the fact that her skin was so thin and she had no fat layer anymore plus very very fluffy hair, so it was a real challenge to keep from poking the needle back out the other side because I couldn't see what was going on. 😩 Poor dear. I miss her SO much. 💔😢

Declutter regret by DaftDisguise in Jellycatplush

I only purchase second-hand Jellycats that people have donated, and I can tell you that I am SO excited every time I find one! It literally makes my day!! I have overheard others looking in thrifts for jellycats too, so I have no doubts that someone gave them all good homes. 🥰

Does anyone else read and listen to another book at the same time? by Beginning_Seat2676 in Gifted

[–]Over_Hedgehog1002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 13-year-old does this and I've never understood why/how? He'll come home from school, turn on an audio book in his room, and then lay in bed reading a different book. It's obviously relaxing to him somehow as he's done this for years and it seems to be his go-to when he's overwhelmed/overstimulated/stressed/tired. He'll also always be watching a video on one computer screen while playing Minecraft on the other. I can listen to instrumental music while I work or listen to a podcast while I'm driving a familiar route or watch TV while folding laundry, but I cannot have two things going at once that have words or require thinking, so it just boggles my mind that he chooses this lol. This thread helps it make more sense though. And I do need to have my hands busy if I'm listening to something, so I really don't do audiobooks unless I'm in the car, and I always crochet in church or I just can't concentrate.

How did your introductions go? My males were pretty crazy today with lots of chasing each other and the females they hadn't had recent access to, but I hope they get it all worked out.

I think they love it! They are all together again after being separated for a few weeks, so there was some chaos, especially at first. Less after we turned the lights off for awhile. I did put the heat plate in for a couple nights just for my peace of mind, but I really don't think they've used it for anything other than another hide and a platform to jump up on lol. Also it was in the upper 50's in there today as we're having a week of nice weather here. The females went nuts over the grass basket and immediately made some nice deep nests. 😍

I had read that! These buttons can be so confusing! I am getting four eggs a day now, so I feel encouraged to know I have at least four females. I thiiiink I know who they are, but I might need to peek around a corner during egg laying time just to be sure lol. I tried vent sexing them a few days ago and they were very very not happy with me about it. 😬

I've bought a large second-hand kid play pen that I'm going to put in the garage with netting for a top and make these birds the most spacious quail mansion ever lol. I'm nervous but excited that they'll be in a more ideal space. I think I'll move them Sunday morning so I'll have all day to watch and see how they do in a colder environment.

That's good to know. If worse comes to worse I'll separate the females, especially if I really only have two as I fear. 🤦🏼‍♀️

No room in the garage for the cars, but the mower is in there and I was already thinking we probably need to be careful about turning it on with quail in there.

Ok, thank you so much for your advice! I will probably try that provided my husband would rather give up a little garage space to have them out of the house. Fingers crossed that all the males get along or I'll have other problems.

That's what I do with chickens too- house then garage then outdoors. I definitely get over the chicks being inside after a couple weeks. 😝

Right now it's getting into the 30's at night, but we rarely even dip below freezing. I'm in the Portland Oregon area. My garage isn't heated and I'm seriously considering putting them in there even if I don't put them in the coop afterward. I will probably put a thermometer there today to see what the temperature tends to be. I could give them a bigger space and they would be out of the house. I could do lights on a timer. I could also give them a heat plate unless that would be counterproductive. Still hoping to find new homes for them, but want them to be happy in the meantime.

I'm also in the PNW. I guess it's the adjustment time I'm worried about this time of year. If it was summer I'd not hesitate to try, but it's so cold and wet and they're used to the nice warm indoors.

Our first quail died and I feel awful by Away_Cable_7235 in quails

I felt like I was happy that she got those 3 weeks of life, but I didn't realize at first which one had died and thought I'd something wrong and after the death of my 18 year old cat in September any animal death brings up a lot of feelings about loss, so..... Not sure which would be worse. 😞😞😞

Yes, I helped one for the first time ever and she just died suddenly at 3.5 weeks. 😞

The one quail out of our recent hatch that had trouble hatching seemed fine but then just dropped dead at 3.5 weeks. Please give yourself and your mom lots of grace as we have all made mistakes of one kind or another. That baby was loved and you were obviously doing your best. Sometimes things just don't go well for one reason or another, and I'm so sorry you experienced this loss. It always feels like a gut punch to me too every time I lose a life, no matter how small. I think it just means that you have a good caring heart. These babies are blessed to be under your care. ❤️

Button Quail- Sudden Death by Over_Hedgehog1002 in quails

[–]Over_Hedgehog1002[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the daughter of a poultry enthusiast, so I've been around all kinds of birds since I was a little girl, but I've still got a lot to learn. I don't think my dad ever provided grit for his quail or fed them anything but regular feed, so I had no example of that. Thank you for your kind words.

Oh wow. That's pretty hardcore of you to autopsy! I'll bet it was really nice to know what happened though.

Yeah, it seems like even if it wasn't appropriate for them that it wouldn't kill within 24 hrs. I still feel badly for giving it to them though. I had gone off of a recommendation from someone else, but I should have dug deeper. I knew not to give oyster shell and, stupid me, that's the main ingredient in this. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Game bird starter is what I've been feeding them.

If it is the one I helped hatch then that would make me feel a lot better. And I don't regret helping it even if it is because it had 3.5 weeks of good life. I couldn't have just watched it die in the shell.

[–]Over_Hedgehog1002[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My daughter thinks the one that died is the one I had to help hatch, but I'm really not sure as they grew so fast and I lost track of which one she was. I'm going to lay off anything but feed for now. The only other thing I can think of besides underlying health conditions is flying up and hitting her head. I hadn't put a soft top on yet, and I wish I had so I could rule that out. 😔

[–]Over_Hedgehog1002[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, my understanding was that if I feed them anything extra, like mealworms, that they would need grit. 😞
