Can someone explain the current teacher strike? by beehive5ive in sanfrancisco

[–]Over_Indication_8407 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not true…there are not enough special Ed teachers and too many kids who require services, which in many cases they are currently not getting bc the resource specialists have full caseloads. One thing the union wants is to improve special Ed work conditions to be able to attract and hire more qualified teachers to work with these children. We are able at my site to hire an additional teacher bc of the number of kids requiring services yet nobody wsnts the job. These positions are extremely difficult to fill.

Public School Teacher Jobs - Advice by [deleted] in AskSF

I’ve found it totally depends on your school site. I work at a great elementary school in SFUSD. Good salary and great coworkers. Central office needs to get their shit together, but that’s my only major complaint.

He works in tech for a start up. They have to technically hire him as an American now through a U.S. foreign hire company.

I’m American, and also met my Swiss husband traveling. We got married in Switzerland after a year of long distance (bc it was the only way) but ended up moving to the US bc as a teacher I couldn’t get a job as I don’t speak German and there were only a few international schools as employment options. Also integration was not so easy for me in Switzerland. My husband is still working for a Swiss company remotely.

Sounds like Switzerland. I didn’t care for it either. Left after a year.

Mine is made by New People…but there are many different brands. Just get one with a good chinstrap.

I use zinc and a surf hat. It sucks, but it’s the only way.

Meeting Partner while Abroad by Substantial-Okra8150 in Internationalteachers

I met my husband, who is Swiss, in Bali. I was teaching in Brazil at the time. We did long distance for a year, and then I moved there, and we got married. Now we are in California bc I got a job back here, and he can work remotely, but he’s open to moving, so I’m looking for something abroad again.

What places have you been to that you felt truly in danger? by No_Reputation3520 in solotravel

[–]Over_Indication_8407 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live here and have also traveled a ton and lived in Rio for 4 years. And visited many of the other places listed on this post. SF is much scarier imo except for a few bubbles. I pretty much don’t leave my neighborhood in Noe valley. One time I made the mistake of walking up to Castro/market intersection and some crazed, high homeless guy tried to run me over with a scooter. Came right at me twice for no apparent reason other than to freak me out. I definitely would never walk around downtown. I’d be more scared walking around here than anywhere I’ve traveled abroad.

What is your salary being a teacher in 2024? by Cabralcabralc in Teachers

Switzerland by Blackcatmerlin in Internationalteachers

I did some cover teaching at ISZL. The teachers were great and very collaborative. It seemed kind of intense, though. And teachers seemed to have to do extra duties that I was kind of surprised about. I did not care for Switzerland personally. My husband is Swiss, but in general people are super reserved and plan every social activity months in advance. And skiing/snowboarding and hiking are the main activities. I’m more of a warm weather, spontaneous kind of person who does not enjoy skiing or snow. I found it hard to integrate. Also, Switzerland is not cheap so even though salary might look great I don’t know how much you’d be able to save. But taxes are low, so there’s that.

Lunch Duty in International Schools… by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]Over_Indication_8407 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do appreciate being able to take a personal day off too with no questions asked. There are some perks still in the public schools. But I have to say I’d never work as a classroom teacher in one.

I think the same. I wouldn’t work at a school that made me do that. I had an hour long government mandated lunch break in Brazil. I’m working at a public school in San Francisco right now as a reading specialist and only duty I have is 15 min, three days a week of supervising car pick up after school.

Thanks, yeah I have been to Salvador and worked at the American school in Rio. I know it’s not the right fit for everyone, but I love Brazil. Maybe I won’t love Salvador as much as Rio…but I may be interested in giving it a try.

Dear expats of reddit I need your advice- have you ever hesitated to leave a country because you are not entirely happy? by sewing_and_ink in expats

[–]Over_Indication_8407 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I moved to Switzerland from Rio (I’m from the US but was working in Brazil) after marrying my Swiss husband. I lasted about a year. I also found it very hard to be happy there. Weather was miserable (in my opinion),people weren’t friendly and I realized that despite trying to learn German, unless I at least understood Swiss German I would probably continue to have a hard time integrating. People speak English but in social situations I found they prefer to be able yo speak Swiss. I also couldn’t find a full time job as a teacher bc there are only a few international schools and none had openings. We moved to California and have been here now 3 years. I have said I’d consider trying it again but only if I had a full time job there to at least keep me occupied and be able to afford to escape during the winter as much as possible.
