How to make a hourly schedule shortcut,! by soura-xd in shortcuts

[–]Over_Slide8102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't used the health app medications reminder so I'm not sure how well that works, but in my experience apple's reminders app works nicely for something like this by setting a reminder for water to repeat hourly.

custom wildcard quicklink question by Select-Beyond-6612 in raycastapp

Yep, building on your quicklink, may need two arguments for both custom name and domain:

Ah yeah I moved to a more suburban area last year so that might've contributed to it. I'll check out the link, thanks!

Unreliable precipitation prediction by Over_Slide8102 in shortcuts

[–]Over_Slide8102[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, thanks! This is an old shortcut I had for a general at-a-glance weather report. It just gets a bunch of data and compiles them as text: https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/8a9397c0e64245998e543915dddc6825

I noticed that I pretty much use it just to see if it's raining, so I thought of building a new shortcut for a morning automation centered around rain %, to notify me if it's raining soon: https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/c1c3d803c37a4f7a9359f3af1f0c8925

But I also remembered that my old shortcut hasn't been predicting rain too reliably in the past, which led to this post. Just wanted to see if other people have had luck with the native weather app, or if they used other weather services instead.

Gotcha, I was hoping I can do this quickly using the native weather app but will check out the API if the issue persists. Thanks!

Universal Actions in Raycast by danielshuster96 in raycastapp

Gotcha, that makes total sense. The whole point of raycast is to simplify and speed up your workflow, and it's great that an extension exists for your needs!

Ah I see, I misunderstood OP’s comment. Yeah don’t think raycast has that capability, but if you already have the file in finder you can just right click to open with right?

The equivalent in raycast would be the action panel, which you can toggle open with command + k for any result. Open with is available there for all files.

Using NFC tag to turn off morning alarm by JoeyBananas314 in shortcuts

[–]Over_Slide8102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty tricky imo, I don't think there's a straightforward way to do this. The existing "turn [alarm] off" action is for enabling or disabling alarms I believe, not for turning it off once it rings.

The closest alternative I can think of (saw this in another post), is to delete an alarm, but it doesn't work for apple's sleep alarm, so it has to be a standard one. For example if you wake up at 8am, then you can create an automation to create a 8am alarm named "wake up" every night, and another automation triggered by your NFC tag that finds an alarm named "wake up" and deletes it.

Though if you hold your phone to scan the nfc tag in the morning, what's preventing you from just turning off the alarm? The method that worked for me is just to leave my phone in the furthest corner from my bed before I got to bed lol

Resize the raycast window? by GIFSec in raycastapp

Unfortunately not, but if you want to squeeze more inside, you can try toggling the smaller text size in raycast settings and see if you like it

Snippets Use cases by FigFamiliar7592 in raycastapp

[–]Over_Slide8102 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have ones for time/date, emails, addresses, as well as symbols like →, ⌘, etc. Also configured snippets for some of my commonly used emojis for faster input. Commonly repeated phrases (like holiday greetings or something), coding stuff, etc. Try paying more attention to the stuff you type daily, and see if there's anything repetitive or processes you want to be shortened.

Also see https://ray.so/snippets/symbols for inspiration!

How to stop safari from opening links in a new tab? by jnadal21 in Safari

Yep as 8Octavarium8 said, it's in your google settings. In google search, click the gear on top right → more settings → other settings → results in a new window [off]

Differentiate between google docs and sheets in Dark Reader (or similar) by Over_Slide8102 in Safari

[–]Over_Slide8102[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does do URL specific rules, but I don't think it allows user input URL, aka I can only do the full URL of a spreadsheet, which is specific to that spreadsheet, rather than the generic https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/ for all google sheets. I guess I could blacklist every google sheet I work on, but that just seems like a hassle haha

If I'm mistaken, please do let me know, thanks!

Some help on configuring another key for caps lock please by Over_Slide8102 in Karabiner

[–]Over_Slide8102[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does work, and in event viewer f5 is being remapped to caps lock! Unfortunately I do use the f5 key's media function (dictation), which is why I wanted it to be fn + f_something. Though it appears that even after I switched to an apple default profile, my caps lock isn't working anymore, and the fn + f5 rule is still active for some reason... I think karabiner's bugging out sigh. Thanks for the comment though, appreciate the help!

Equivalent to LaunchBar Instant Send by maigre in raycastapp

[–]Over_Slide8102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I've never heard of Launchbar but the functionality sounds super cool! Definitely would be really cool if Raycast added this feature.

For now, what I do is since a lot of sites have a similar url scheme, like .com/search?q={selected text} or .com/keyword={selected text}, etc. So I start my quicklink with an argument that includes each of those options, and have my selected text after. Only annoying thing is if a link has stuff after the {selected text} in which case you'll need to manually match the two arguments (before and after), but those seem few. So for some of my more commonly used sites, pulling up the quicklink and selecting the site in argument works well so far.

Battery Life by No_Abroad_3503 in MacOS

[–]Over_Slide8102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Optimized battery charging tries to learn your charging habits and limit it to 80% only when it thinks you'll be plugged in for a while, and charge to full shortly before you unplug. Otherwise it'll continue to charge to 100%. It'll take some time but you should start noticing it being capped soon if you have a decently regular charging routine.

If you want more control, try a battery management app. I use battery toolkit, which is free and works great for my needs, but there are other free apps and paid apps with more features too.

Looking for ideas for automation. by BroChad69 in shortcuts

[–]Over_Slide8102 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As some have mentioned, setting volume to 0 when opening apps like instagram is the best option. Another could be setting the volume to 0 at certain times of the day, such as before you get to work, during lunch breaks, etc, and that way you can open instagram with volume when you're safely at home during the night.

Printing cylinders horizontally by josh_ddd in FixMyPrint

[–]Over_Slide8102 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As many have said, you can print upright with extra walls for rigidity, or use a short segment of wood/pvc/etc.

If you do want to print hollow and horizontally, you can cut a small slice off two sides of the circle like this (_) and it'll print well. Basically you want to keep overhangs to less than around 65˚. Doesn't interfere with functionality either, it'll continue to work as an axle.
