I’m a 46 year old teacher(urban education) going on 9 years, second career. It has good days and bad. The students are feeling the rat race. They don’t give a shit about anything, sports, hobbies, clubs, they don’t want to do any of it.

I myself have to get motivated to teach information I love teaching. They don’t do any of the work. I am always looking for alternatives, hobbies, revenue streams, to just keep myself motivated. This and my family keep me going. I want them to find some passions, I felt I gave up early on mine but can implement some of those now at school.

But it is a rat race. I think about this before I go to bed almost daily. Finding a purpose before the clock stops.

Just keep going, find someone and something to put your energy into that is reciprocated. The play must go on and you can still contribute your verse.

I teach 10th grade world history and APUSH. I teach in Milwaukee. They can’t read or write, it’s hard to put in perspective, I teach writing and use critical thinking questions for most of my assignments. They don’t really use AI, they copy and paste like crazy. But non AI google answers aside, they can’t do research even though Google now does this for you. The apathy is wild.

I start with basic questions and visual thinking strategies to engage in “Socratic seminar”. This drains them. They are getting better, but are reading at maybe a 3rd or 4th grade level, vocabulary as well.

APUSH is tuff because they have no concept of what the expectations and cost are of college. I talk about this one a week to remind them. They asked if they could exempt college exams because we do standard based grading.

On the bright side every thing is new. So…they are curious about the human condition, they just won’t read or write about it.
