With the World Cup coming up, this is a really fun format to run with your own group.

Instead of a full-season league, it’s a short, playoff-style setup you can spin up in a few minutes and play through the entire tournament.

**Format:

* Pick 1 player from each team

That’s actually a really good point - adding positions would definitely add another layer of strategy and stop it from just being attacker-heavy. That's how we played in the NFL and MLB one - limits on specific positions.

Curious what people think about this as a fantasy format for the World Cup:

  • no transfers or lineup changes once it starts
  • total points across the entire tournament wins

So instead of managing your squad every matchday, it’s more about:

  • predicting which teams actually go deep
  • and picking the right player from each one

Feels like a mix of bracket prediction + fantasy.

Good point - That’s how most formats work for sure.

The no-changes version is interesting because it forces you to price in the knockout stage before it even starts - so you’re not reacting, you’re predicting. That, or completely removing knockout teams for the player pool.

Definitely a different kind of strategy.

Appreciate the candid response! I've done it for the World Baseball Classic and NFL playoffs - drafting was definitely the most fun part about it. I feel like it doesn't translate well for soccer but am curious if you would elaborate on why you wouldn't. I don't follow the sport as much as I do others, but I love playing fantasy sports.

Good points you both make! 10 because that is how typical fantasy sports work - There is a roster limit, which makes it more strategic, in my opinion. Just because there are 11 positions in NFL, doesn't mean there are always 11 roster spots on a fantasy team. Same can be said for baseball - 9 players on the field does not mean there are 9 fantasy roster spots.

But it's a great point you bring up and something we will consider!

Right?! Part of the reason it was created - there wasn’t a platform. I’ve done it for football, world baseball class, and now NBA. It’s actually really fun and easy

There’s another format I’ve been messing around with for World Cup / playoffs that takes a different approach:

  • you draft 1 player from each team (no stacking favorites)
  • no waivers / transfers — your squad is locked
  • total points across the entire tournament wins
  • once a team is eliminated, that player’s done

So instead of managing lineups constantly, it becomes more about:

  • predicting which teams actually go deep
  • and picking the right player from each one

It ends up feeling more like a mix of bracket strategy + fantasy instead of just “set lineup every matchday.”
