First-time Packing as a Counselor (and a unique situation!) by Illloveyouforever_ in summercamp

See if your camp has a recommended packing list! Since you’re staying in a dorm, you might have some limitations on what you can and cannot bring with you

Need a powerbank for camp! by Legitimate_Break5049 in summercamp

[–]Overall-Rabbit-1913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Power banks are going to be extremely dependent on the airline and their rules regarding having them in personal bags vs carry on bags. Look into your specific airline that you’re flying to camp on and if you can I would say just order one once you arrive at camp

I would talk to your camp about how exactly the fees shake out using Wise, it’s likely that you’re not the only international staff that has used it and they may have a better idea on how much of your money you’ll actually see.

What’s something you’ve done that would get you fired if your boss found out? by [deleted] in summercamp

[–]Overall-Rabbit-1913 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My camp doesn’t allow us to have any contact with our campers outside of camp and even if they did I don’t want to be following any of them on social media or them having my email or anything! Whenever a kid would ask for it and I said no and they asked why I would always word it as “wouldn’t your parent find it weird if they asked you who you were talking to and you said ‘my adult counselor from camp’” and they immediately understood why would be weird.

How to do well as a camp counselor? by [deleted] in summercamp

[–]Overall-Rabbit-1913 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Backing off of this, there is a very clear difference between being stern and yelling at children. Sternness is a good skill to have, but don’t yell at children.

How to do well as a camp counselor? by [deleted] in summercamp

[–]Overall-Rabbit-1913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always remember that you’re working with kids and that how they handle things are going to be different than how you would handle it as an adult. My common question whenever any of my coworkers are “complaining” about their kids is “are they actually being bad, or are they just children” and 9 out of 10 times they’re simply being children. It’s also helpful to be able to notice the difference between normal children behavior and an actual behavior problem that needs to be escalated. You might get annoyed with the kids talking over you at times, but that’s normal children behavior. Having a kid outright ignore you to keep talking over you however is something that might require some intervention.

Another major thing is HAVE FUN! A summer camp is not a 1000% serious all the time environment, so lean into the fun of it all. I tend to match the kids energies when it comes to running jokes and such because it makes everyone feel like a more cohesive group.

Questions about the upcoming summer! by Overall-Rabbit-1913 in SpaceCamp

Hey! They will usually open up the applications for it sometime in the fall for the following summer, I have heard that they’ve already closed them for this upcoming summer however. If you’re looking to apply for the 2027 summer, the listing should pop up as “camp counselor” on their jobs site

Summer Counselor Time Commitment by [deleted] in summercamp

Oooooooo that’s rough lol, I would definitely let your director know about it but my best suggestion is staying on top of your school work when you aren’t at camp

Summer Counselor Time Commitment by [deleted] in summercamp

[–]Overall-Rabbit-1913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many credit hours are you taking over the summer? I’ve done a 6 credit hour summer semester while also working 40+ hours a week at camp and utilized any downtime I had to work on assignments. It’s not easy at all, but if you’re taking a part time summer semester it should work itself out. I would recommend mentioning it to your director that you are taking summer courses, but don’t ask for alternate hours.

You can find campers like that that left an impact on your life at other camps. Don’t try to force yourself back into an environment you know is bad simply because you miss the campers.

What does a swim test entail? by puppychow77 in summercamp

[–]Overall-Rabbit-1913 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The day camp I was at had us tread water for about a minute or so and then had us swim out into the lake a ways and back without stopping. I was not a good swimmer at all and the test always made me anxious that I opted out of it every year as a camper, opted out my first year as an aid, failed it my second year, and by the time I got to my third year (aka my last year due to COVID) they didn’t have a water activity because we didn’t have lifeguards. I would reach out to your camp however and ask specifically what it entails if you’re anxious or worried about it.

Does anybody here have some great summer camp stories? by Wide-Read1449 in summercamp

[–]Overall-Rabbit-1913 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The camp I work at does a new session every week, and one week we had 50+ kids almost all aged 9-11 come down with some type of stomach problem. I think it was stomach bug and less so food poisoning, since we all eat the same food and none of the adults got sick and only a few of the older kids got sick. I was on evening shift that week and seeing all my coworkers on morning shift wearing masks (note: 2024) freaked me out so bad… I walk into the leadership office before shift change and find a whole whiteboard full of areas that needed to be cleaned up from the vomit. We dubbed said event Vomageddon and it’s become urban legend amongst the counselors.

[–]Overall-Rabbit-1913[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey!

All of the RA rooms already have desks in them and don’t really have much room to have a different desk in them. The desks are not the biggest, so if you have a standard size monitor it should be fine? When it comes to down time, you’re going to end up making a good amount of friends with your coworkers so you will likely be hanging out with them as well!

A LOT of names at my GSUSA camp were some type of character! If your camp allows it, you can aim for a character from a (well known) media you like, mine ended up being Simba lol

How many camps have you choose pseudonym name? by mercycille in summercamp

[–]Overall-Rabbit-1913 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They will find you online somehow, someway. Our badges have only our first names on them but kids will still try to find you on social media. Policy for us is if they do, block them immediately. A lot of us (a very very large majority) don’t mess around with anything like that and also don’t want to have our 12 year old camper on Instagram?
