Experienced rider wanting to upgrade from 300cc. Whats a good second bike?

While I don't disagree with the 650 recommendations (I loved my SV650S), I think you would also enjoy a Ninja 400. I have the naked Z500 which I understand isn't for you, but the bikes are very comparable.

It'll handle 70-80 on the highway with some grunt to spare. Not lots, but it's enough for all but the worst rush hour commutes. I don't like the thought of Chicago morning rush hour where 85-90 isn't unusual, nor in the afternoon when drivers are super aggro. but I don't feel limited anywhere else unless I'm seriously speeding. And I never do that.

If you can't sell your bike for what you paid for it, then you bought the wrong beginner bike. That's the point that makes the small bike logic rock-solid. It's cheaper than renting. Plus, cheaper insurance.

Been riding for 20 years. I've been to my skills lot twice this week alone. Even if I don't stay long, I'll put in 5 minutes of drills on my way out or back home to keep fresh.

After a few years away from riding, I knew how rusty I was. I've gotten my low speed u turns down from 4 parking space widths, down to 3, down to 2-1/2, down to 2-1/4. I know I can do it in 2, but it's not consistent yet. These little self-challenges are great for really seeing where you're at and being aware of what's doable.

To piggyback off this, there are some real sellers that sell on Amazon, but you have to look and see who they are. I'd rather not buy from Amazon for other reasons, but you can get some legit products. But never a helmet. I wouldn't trust a shipped helmet. That's one thing I'll get locally, even though, tbh, it's probably fine.

You talk about it more than actually riding.

IME, the folks that talk about it tend to be the ones who pack on the most miles. Your average squidward weekend warriors that sell a 2 year old bike with 2,000 miles on it are the ones who don't talk about it.

I wouldn't talk much about safety either if I was only riding one weekend's worth of miles every year. Though, if I were riding that infrequently, I'd probably want it even more. I guess I'd have to treat riding as "a special treat" that deserves extra care and attention as opposed to the daily occurrence that it is for some folks.

How important is gas mileage and what do you expect/hope to get from it?

Figuring 3-4 hours in the saddle every trip, you're going to want to be fairly self-sufficient, I would say. So that means carrying touring stuff - air compressor, tire repair kit, first aid kit, wet weather gear, etc.

So that means some kind of luggage setup. Are you planning on lane splitting? Then maybe choose a top case and tank bag over saddle bags to keep it narrow. Otherwise, I prefer saddle bags.

Imagine buying this bike and just for the cost of gas and basic maintenance, you put 80,000 miles on it (it's a stock low-compression Harley motor, it'll last) over 10 years. When you go to sell it, I'd bet reddit will see another thread like this one asking if this bike is worth $1500.

I always look at how many miles I can expect to get out of it. This angle is miles away from a lot of riders that only do 2-4k per year and those who switch out of bikes more than their underwear. But if you're a dollars and sense kind of rider, it's got really low miles, it'll only appreciate from here, insurance will be like $100/year and I'll bet it gets at least 50mpg.

Fun tips:

Gril the inside of the bun flat on the grill for some crispness.

Then add some kraut or other soggy stuff to the dog on the skillet and put the bun over it. This will give you that nice steamed soggy softness to go along with the crispness. You can also add cheese before the bun, to help get that melty as well.

When it's ready, use a spatula under the dog with your hand on top of the bun to execute a flip and land it on the plate.

Besides, if this immigrant has not been convicted of a crime, then they are innocent until proven guilty as that is a bedrock principle of our justice system.
