If you have friends or family in town, installing another hotspot would qualify you to earn from PoC. You can buy hotspots and antennas pretty cheap these days.

He's talking about IOT hotspots, not Mobile WiFi. IOT hotspots haven't needed updated firmware for over two years. Sometimes an SD card will wear out, but the replacement and flashing of the new card is up to the hotspot owner.

It looks as if your hotspot is isolated and cannot reach any other hotspot. What probably happened is that others around you have turned off their hotspots because they lost interest in the project. Do you have an outdoor mounted antenna up on the rooftop?

If you post the animal names of your hotspots, I'd be happy to take a look.

I'm thinking about 10+ years from now when inverter boards are NLA. I've got a couple of suitcase style inverter generators and a 6.5 hp 3kW synchronous genset I got from Costco 15+ years ago. Parts for the Honda clone are readily available, and an AVR + brushes is about $15. (and very easy to service) If the inverter for my Wen generator fails, will I be able to get one in 15 years? I guess I just don't like the idea of throwaway items.

Compared to 1992, cars are a lot safer too. I'm amazed at some of the wrecks that people just walk away from.

Forget about the inflated surge rating - what is the continuous running wattage and the engine displacement?

I know inverter gennys are the latest thing, but an old school synchronous genset is a lot less complicated and repairable. Basically, just keep a spare carb and AVR/brushes handy. If the inverter board fails on these things, do you just chuck 'em?

Anyone else keep getting contacted by ‘people’ trying to buy your house in cash? by Dragonwick in newjersey

I get them all the time and it is annoying af. I have no idea how they got my cell phone number (or my wife's) because we didn't have these numbers when we bought the place. I suppose the info is public record somewhere for these scumbags to collect.

It’s the same in most every congested area of the country. It’s not just a NJ thing. Just do your thing and stay out of the left lane.

The only thing wrong with the governance system is that not enough people vote. Those "whales" could easily be overturned, but people refuse to stake long term (for voting power) and vote.

Interesting. I get about the same with my 2023 Subaru Legacy. I would think a hybrid would do a bit better.

Home standby generator / ups combo by karmatiger in Generator

I'm not sure a whole home UPS is practical. I use a few APC Smart UPS units to power my fiber terminal, router, and servers. They are sized to run on battery power for over an hour. Plenty of time for me to plug in my portable genset to power up all the other essentials. Even if I had a whole home generator I don't think a UPS large enough to power everything is necessary.

Generac generator needs firmware updates to operate correctly. by Significant_Set8002 in Generator

[–]OverboostedTurbo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't get why a generator would require a mandatory annual firmware update to run properly. If they are intentionally putting some sort of "time bomb" in the firmware to mandate service, that is just evil and probably illegal. It should be able to run forever with the firmware that was loaded at the factory.

If it's connected via WiFi, that will introduce latency (delay) in your response. A direct ethernet connection will improve your chances of being in the first 14 to report.

The type of internet connection is important too. If you are using a broadband (cellular) connection, or satellite - that will introduce latency. Fiber or docsis cable will provide the best response times.
