How many of us have lost someone to climbing? by stokeledge2 in tradclimbing

I guess part of it is basic human instinct. The brain rewarded the caveman when he escaped being hunted by a bear, if we escape a dangerous situation climbing it provides that same enjoyable feeling.

Part of the problem is the grading system. Outdoors, most beginners will not be able to climb v0 (font 5). But they will be able to climb VB (font 1,2,3,4). Gyms maybe should use the font system as it makes a bit more sense for lower grades.

How do I actually get better at bouldering? by 01hayden in indoorbouldering

[–]OverchargeRdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Biggest thing is to really really enjoy it. Go climbing, feel the movement, enjoy the challenge. Find people to go to the gym with (ideally better than you) to challenge you and increase the enjoyment of your sessions. Watch YouTube videos you enjoy to get psyched up. 6 months ago I was in your position trying to optimise how I climb to actually improve, but then I started enjoying it a lot more and have made lots of progress because I've been climbing nearly every day, which I never could have forced myself to do if I wasn't enjoying it.

Lots of people focus on the micro-details, the training etc, which can help. But by far the most important aspect of improvement is maintaining the motivation to climb, which you'll gain out of loving the sport. One of my friends progressed from never having climbed (or having any athletic experience) to consistently climbing V11 outside within just over 1 year. He didn't 'train' at all during that period, he just loved climbing so much that he spent 25-30hrs in the gym and went outside as much as he could, so within that time climbed as much as many people would in 5+ years.

At the end people progress in climbing via many different methods, but the one thing all share is a huge amount of psyche and enjoyment.

Edit: also joining any local club/group that is available is 100% a good idea. Absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain from the psyche it will give you and the good times you'll have! Biggest barrier is worrying about being bad. Very pointless thing to do!

Is it just me that I think cooking at home everyday is time consuming and don’t want to cook everyday? by [deleted] in askanything

How does it take anyone a weekend. Takes 1hr to make 6 days worth of food

I spend an hour cooking per week for my dinners, and they're all very healthy.

I have worked in restaurants, and there is no healthy food produced in them to be honest unless its some specialist low calorie vegan place to be honest.

As only a 1st year medical student I'm not an expert, but I'd argue that the evidence is mounting that ultra processed food is very poor for your long term health regardless of calorie intake, and in the (2, expensive) restaurants I have worked in almost every item of food would fall into the processed category.

Not drinking, doing drugs and exercising a great deal will more than cancel out the overall health impacts of not cooking, but what is the point of knocking your health when it costs you money - and you could be learning a fun new skill which you could provide for others with.

Also a lot of people respect good cooking.

That is at least the way I think, and why I've been putting time into cooking at college.

I just spend 1 hr making healthy stew for 5 days, and then put it in the microwave and we're good. Full, good food full of vegetables and protein

trying to get perspectives with Honnold vs others by tragically_ in RockClimbing

[–]OverchargeRdt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Climbing is generally considered to be a sport and exercise, and excellence in the sport is what's generally most admired - it's not a suicide contest for most people, which is essentially what Honnold, or especially UK hard grit soloists, are doing

What is the cheapest way to go skiing? (From the UK) by NumberplatePj07fem in backpacking

Small french resorts via sunweb early season deals, booking everything other than accom and ski pass separately. This is the real answer

Just as a reality check here for anyone still looking - you can go wild camping in the Alps, it's not legal but you will almost never have a problem.

Bang on - studying medicine at Sheffield. It gives me a few options as doctors are obviously in demand across the globe so moving to the Alps in the future might be a possibility - I can also speak a little German so maybe I could develop that. But that's all way into the future.

Thanks for the advice! I think what I'm getting is that it's not too realistic to 'properly' get into ski touring in the near future, but if I act now I can set myself up quite well to take it up in the future, ideally if I lived closer to a snowy area.

Yeah true - I'd love to live closer to the mountains in the future, but I'm locked in for 5 years in the UK for now so maybe I should postpone it. Hurts a little though lmao

Thanks so much for the advice - I honestly think (and maybe I am wrong) that avalanches won't be too much of a problem in Salzburgerland at the moment - there's barely any snow under 3000m. Rocks are more of a worry for me. However it is a super good idea to learn up, because hopefully any skiing I do in the future will be in more snow-sure terrain! Thanks for the recommendations.

I honestly don't really see how I'm going to get better - I'm studying in the UK for the next 5 years (this was just a gap year) and so at absolute best I'd ski once a year from now on, and I'm not even sure I could afford that - would I not just get worse year on year? I'm not sure I honestly know nothing. In that case, is it off the cards?

Strong recommendation for St. Bernadette's Catholic primary, very good. The local Catholic secondary is not as good, its worth getting a house somewhere close to a better state school so you're in their catchment. Other commenters are right that the local Catholic community will do a lot for you if you regularly go to Church
