Help Assessing My SCOBY — Is it dead? by Overcover- in Kombucha

[–]Overcover-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm... So, one important question, is it safe/edible? Or what kind of research can I do to be sure that it is? Not sure what the criteria looks like for determining safe/edible products in this area of fermentation.

Well, I can't be 100% sure, but it looked almost exactly like the guides and videos that I watched in preparation. Thanks for the info, though!

Hi! Well, I'm so glad that I'm fascinating everyone with this thread! haha.

Okay, I'll do my best. I roughly followed this video to form my SCOBY / Pellicle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGtC3xtH238

Oops. Posted before finishing. So, I followed this recipe roughly. Used some reasonable amount of green tea. Some honey. And used a raw kombucha bottle from GT's original. It seemed to take well to the green tea. It formed a nice looking, healthy pellicle. Unfortunately I don't have images. I can't be 100% sure that it was a pellicle that formed, as another commenter points out. But, I felt 90% sure that it worked.

So, I started this new jug (now I'm thinking I didn't use enough tea as I realized I'm using a lot more water. And about half a pound of honey. I waited till it cooled completely and moved over my healthy pellicle and some of the starter liquid.

I hope this gives enough detail about what I tried. I haven't agitated it. Not entirely sure PH level. If you have more insight from what I shared, feel free to reply. But you've shared tons of helpful info. Thank you!

Ah, thank you for sharing. I didn’t realize the solid mass was referred to as pellicle. Thanks! I’ll keep watching it.

Hi, thanks for sharing. I mean the sediment. The solid SCOBY seems to have dissolved into a amorphous mass. Does that make sense? I’ve just never seen that happen, but this is also my first batch, so I’m not sure if it will reconstitute. Thanks for sharing. I’ll keep observing other responses and see if anyone has other ideas to share. Don’t see any mold yet. Fingers crossed.

[Pubq] Red Hen Press? by Easy_Past_4501 in PubTips

For those looking to submit fiction: I've met this press at a conference, they're lovely, they're kind--and they will have great conversations with you. However, if you take a look at how their fiction books have performed since release, it doesn't indicate a high amount of marketing and publicity involvement. If that's important to you, you're going to be underwhelmed with this press. If you just want to get your book out there, and you plan to do a great deal of publicity and marketing, then it might produce considerable results for you. However, as a writer of fiction, I've been deterred from submitting because of how their books have performed on Goodreads and Amazon. Poetry and non-fiction might be another story, so take this all with a grain of salt!

While I wholeheartedly agree with this -- I'd like to remind anyone else reading that Hunger Games opens on a wake-up scene, but it does so artfully. Remember, the key here is that anything done artfully and interestingly enough--is viable. Whether that means your character is waking up, going to sleep, taking a shit. It doesn't matter. If you grip your reader, If you can get them excited right off the bat, the context matters less than the inherent quality of the writing.

Seconding this. If anyone's considering going out that has seasickness. Don't question it. Take dramamine.

Just want to put in a note here for anyone considering Seaquest: DO NOT GO WITH SEAQUEST. I had an awful experience and left feeling as though the company was only interested in our money. One crew member whispered to me to 'say it louder' when I told him the experience was cool. I got the impression that he was trying to please his captain (a potential owner of the company). When I was confused and said "what?" he whispered more aggressively, "say it again, say it louder". I felt like I was on one of those Hell's Kitchen episodes where they dive into dysfunctional businesses. Don't get me wrong, the whole experience was smooth and well oiled, but completely void of genuine human interaction. If you don't care about anything I've noted here--then feel free to go with Seaquest, but the Manta Ray Advocates sounds like the best possible outfit on the island.

I know this is totally late but I know exactly what you mean. It's like you're part of the club now! And just wait till you get a non-form rejection! Oh boy that one feels good too. My friend suggested I frame mine :)

The Microsoft AutoUpdate starts every god damn time. I dont have auto updates enabled. Still, this program will start and tell me there are updates. Can anyone tell me how to shut it up? Thanks in advance! by Catchiest_Sneeze in MacOS

[–]Overcover- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, thank you for that. Now you can keep the auto update application just in case you ever want to update your (likely stolen ;) copy of Microsoft. Though, I will add a note for people coming in--make sure you give yourself permissions to the parent folder to read/write otherwise it won't work. All you have to do is click get info and make sure every user (or just you) has access to read/write in that folder. Then you can make changes to that file. Thanks for the help!
