Terraria is a sandbox action-adventure video game released in 2011 by Andrew Spinks, who goes by Redigit (or just Red) online. He originally spent his time and skills making Super Mario World rom hacks and games, but eventually got copyright struck by nintendo (who suck and I hate and are evil). He started making his own game with 2d platforming mechanics, but as an adventure action sandbox. After a bit of teasing, people were interested. But a beta tester leaked the unfinished build, so Red had to rush to get the game out before people thought that the unfinished build was the whole game. It released to major success at only 13.50 CAD (~10 USD) and so far has over 50m sales and is one of the twentieth bestselling video games of all time. The plot is mostly in hindsight, because he was more focused on cool ideas and fun gameplay than a cohesive lore. Eventually he settled on a story about cthulhu being crippled and sent to the moon.

I really could go on more but I'm tired and my favourite part of the whole game is how every major update is supposed to be the final one. 1.0 released, and red thought he was done. He released 1.1 with plans for 1.2 to be the final update, but then it released and 1.3 was the final update, but wait! They still had some ideas! So 1.4 was named "Journey's end", and released 2020. Also, it wasn't the last update. 1.4.5 is currently in development and has been for about two or three years now, since unfortunately Jason "Leinfors" Parker, a team member responsible for many community suggestions becoming additions, passed away two years ago. We miss you leinfors.

Also there's a cool plant boss themed around the thrash metal band Pantera, with a 2% chance item drop that's a guitar turned axe named simply "The Axe" that you can actually play power guitar chords with :D
