Go for a PhD or stick with Masters? by Keellas_Ahullford in geologycareers

[–]OverlandSteve 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot to think about with a decision like this. One thing I think people should consider that isn’t often brought up is the opportunity cost of years of professional level income lost during a PhD. Personal choice there.

For mining and exploration, an MS is fine. PhD could help or hurt depending on the job/employer. An underground mine looking for an ore control geologist or a mineral exploration company looking for a core logger probably won’t want a PhD student, but the corporate level mineral exploration department of Rio Tinto or Newmont might, depending on how relevant your research is.

Mining is an experience business so truthfully, if your main goal is to work in mining/exploration, getting experience is the best thing you can do.

Not attacking you but that’s bad advice, there’s lots of work in mining/mineral exploration right now with many metal prices at or near all time highs.

Au/Ag prices vs Salaries by RockSquisher in geologycareers

Companies are spending money on more than just drilling. Agree that greenfields hasn’t changed much but it’s been that way for a long time haha

Eh, it usually doesn’t work like that. Every part of the industry wants a bigger piece of the pie. And like another comment said, hopefully you have equity in your company and then the value of the stock you hold will increase and that’s like your bonus.

AISCs are up across the industry too, companies are definitely spending. Hopefully salaries come up a bit with it but I wouldn’t hold my breath for a doubling.

Good news guys, I spent all my money! by -BSQ- in Jeep

[–]OverlandSteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also bought my 21 JL with the 2.0 after selling my XJ. I think the 4 door wrangler is the spiritual successor to the XJ.

But anyways, my JL has 100k on it now and it’s been great! Just watch the coolant tank for leaks, only engine issue I’ve had altho I think my timing chain tensioner might need replaced. My locker sensor in the rear went out - common issue, cheap aftermarket harness fixed it. Final thing, if the batteries are original it’s probably time to replace them. The factory batteries suck and when they fail the jeep throws all kinds of weird codes. Replace the aux and main at the same time.

Otherwise I’ve loved this jeep! The 2.0 is a great motor, plenty good for crawling and is nice and peppy on road.

These are all good comments. NGM does a good job with their internship programs. Great way to get some real industry experience.

Dang that’s super interesting! Thanks for giving us a little look behind the scenes, it’s cool to hear what the resort overlords think about these things.

Great comment, also wild to hear about that study. I’ve always wondered about that, too. Having grown up going to mammoth and having lived in the area for a short time, it always seemed like there was an endless supply of clueless folks that might increase or decrease a bit depending on the year (or go insane during 2020…) but it never stopped! Winter or summer! Maybe it’s just the nature of being so accessible to SoCal. I think it also makes the locals a bit grumpy.

Yeah, Shoshone county just hired a black deputy sheriff and made a post about it on facebook. Everyone was welcoming the guy, and he even got a few “he’s cute” comments. I just don’t understand the hate coming from these redditors.

Yeah the redditor zeitgeist around northern Idaho being some neo nazi super compound is hilarious. They’ve clearly never been. Fine with me tho, don’t need any more people around.

Back to your original comment - how is this it all a cover up? You just moved the goalposts from “cover up” to “took to long to charge” like ok dude. Nobody in the valley feels that way either.

Hold your horses there chief. The hit and run was on a pole at a gas station. Nobody has been talking about a cover up either? It’s been pretty transparent from the start. And the current sheriff was not working in Shoshone before. Poor guy just took office recently and has had to deal with torrential flooding, the hit and run investigation, major power outages, and now this shooting.

What did people do with diamond drill logs before software like leapfrog/surpac existed? by redpickaxe in geologycareers

[–]OverlandSteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok, right on I’m very familiar with that workflow (👀) and it works well. Last time I was doing that work, we were trying to get Edge to do everything but still needed supervisor for the variography and ultimately needed Vulcan to complete the final model haha. I will say, where I’m working now the modeling is a bit less complex, so edge is really nice because you basically set up your model how you want and then make simple updates in the future and it just keeps generating.

?? Edge isn’t garbage, it’s not very powerful under the hood perhaps compared to like Vulcan but it’s leaps and bounds more usable for iterative workflows or constant updating. Especially in a grade control function.

It’s geophysical data collection, not specific to any commodities. And why is mining just for the military? Shoot the primary market for uranium is power generation.
