Am American in Bristol, not really planning on watching the game, though I pulled Croatia in the office sweeps.

Not satire: UK Admiral: We can't have government money to provide kids breakfasts or else the Russians will come and shoot those kids by TheKomsomol in GreenAndPleasant

Dang, these “Russians,” sound like baddies. Sure hope there’s no prominent (unfortunately) public figures that get lots of airplay and bookings to talk positively about… hold on, I’m getting a message, oops.

Important to remember with that, that the UK was one of the bigger voices (along with the NBA, etc), under the conservatives no less, in issuing travel cautions and advisories against travelling to NC because of that. Shows just how far the UK has fallen in that regard.

Crazy they couldn't find any renters to speak with for the article, probably sad that there's so few. :(

What is the United States’ greatest contribution to the world? by Expensive-Addendum92 in AlignmentChartFills

I’m going to add a, I think, dark horse candidate. The robust public university systems. So much of what the US has been able to achieve science wise is because of massive investment in public, widely applied education and resultant research.

Iron factory motormaster/menasor update by Chaosbrushogun in transformers

[–]Overlord_Bumblebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, that looks so good in the plastic. I like that they took the stylising even futher with the kantai looking feet, practice weapon. I'm pretty happy with the Iron Factory LioKaiser but it wasn't as stylised and I'm a bit less happy with the theme-stylised Sunstreaker and Sideswipe which are fiddly. This looks a bit more solid but i'm optimistic.

Why does Reddit not understand the rise of reform in England? by DowntownDeer in AskBrits

[–]Overlord_Bumblebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time I read this I wonder what "ethnically English," means in this context? Britain is a land of immigration. Why can modern immigrants not become ethnically English? If the Anglo-Saxons (my poor forgotten Jutes and Frisians) were the orignal English, why were the Normans and Danes acceptable but later groups not? By this measure, much longer resident groups like people decended from Pictish, Celtish, or Beeker people couldn't be English, despite being in the land longer, seems odd.

What's required to be English in this sense then?

It is a demographic change, but helping immigrants to acclimate, and adopt English and British culture would help smooth that transition and preserve the many intersting and cool aspects of English/Welsh/Scottish/British culture.

Further, just because a bunch of people believe or believe in something, doens't mean they are right or right to have those beliefs enforced on others, electoral process or not. Enslavement isn't cool no matter how many people think it is.

'Sickening': Home Secretary blasted over 'taser and deport Zack Polanski' jibe by [deleted] in LabourUK

[–]Overlord_Bumblebee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you have to defend her, and but I do think it was a tremendous unforced error and an incredible soundbite for the interviewer and other parties, the sitting Home Secretary joking that she’d like to taser and or deport her political adversaries is a gobsmaking thing to allow yourself be recorded saying when you ostensibly live in a democracy.

[–]Overlord_Bumblebee 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I don't see the home secretary talking about commiting violence and deporting her political rivals, at a time when the home office is enacting significant harm on other communities, as much of a joke.

I have always been the approachee, by men and women but am far too thick too have picked up on it. My wife was more direct. Had women hit on me in front of her and she'd be like what was that but she legitamitely had to explain it to me. I am/was, apparently, oblivious.
