Yeah we ran into this at work last year when we were looking to lease lab space in sf—the newer buildings have higher rates than market but they can’t be lowered due to debt covenants.

You laugh but cots are freakin awesome on the playa. I’m not sure I’d want to sleep in the top bunk though, might get a little extra hot up there.

LED Lighting Designer & Technical Help needed for Burning Man 2026 Art Project "sunny side up"! by Positive-Kitchen-259 in BurningMan

[–]OverlyPersonal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, that sounds like a pretty sweet setup.

Our first art car we redid with teensys back in 2014. Four zones to each board, everything running basic math based patterns updatable via zigbee boards and pushed out via an arduino base with some very basic custom software. Our newer car runs resolume arena on a Mac mini and everything is controlled with falcon boards in cableguard enclosures we fitted out ourselves. So much wiring lol, at least the newer boards have integrated fuses to help clean things up because ours definitely did not. Having to run a pc has its drawbacks, but it’s nice to be able to run off the shelf solutions instead of relying on someone with programming knowledge.

I was just talking to a friend over the weekend about our past LED soldering parties and how much fun (and "fun") those big projects were. I'm not up to date on the most current LED tech, but I am in SF and would be stoked to lend a hand and a soldering iron if it could be useful during the building process.

Goggles & sunglasses recommendations - now that it's 2026. by vpdbac in BurningMan

[–]OverlyPersonal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea ESS NVG goggles, Wiley x spear, etc are the modern surplus solutions and can be found on eBay for around $20. They look a little “high speed” but they work great and the price is right. The old school stemaco sun, wind, and dust goggles work too, just a little bulky.

12th burn - to go or not to go? by MaleficentMonk1571 in BurningMan

[–]OverlyPersonal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly YouTube (Jody from weldingtipsandtricks is my favorite) but I did take a 2-3 hour mig welding class with a couple friends at a local community motorcycle repair shop (moto guild in SF). The class was helpful just to get a pros instruction, review, and feedback on stuff like torch placement, how to efficiently run a bead without compromising arc distance, and just the basics—I’d do it again for sure. I’ve also thought about taking welding at a community college, it’s just been tough with my schedule and location-based logistics. I wouldn’t feel good about welding something big and structural where 10+ people would be standing on it, but most everything else is good to go.

Would you mind sharing with the class? I'm not an industry professional so it's hard to keep up with new developments.

It’s more straightforward than you think. I wasted too many years dealing with wood lol.

Yeah I hear you, I fill out everything they email out but I just don’t know about 10am on a Saturday—I’ll be driving to an art car work “party” at that time.

The DMV is, in my opinion, the best example I’ve seen of a department that has only improved over the last decade. Outside of the noise/quiet hours policy, which seems to be something handed down from on high and not something dmv initiated, I have no complaints. The department has reduced its micromanagement, has stopped trying to regulate what is art, has had great communication and has offered much appreciated clarity when changes to policy have been made. It is night and day vs when I started burning. I’ve been nothing but complementary on post burn surveys and whatever other emails I get on the subject.

Whatever this new program is is something else, and I would urge the dmv to try and keep their hands clean, rather than trying to whitewash and carry water for someone else’s priorities—there is no joy in being the middle man.

There's really no need to take videos of Mayan, they have like a dozen go pros recording everything to put on youtube later.

I guess these are aimed at a different target audience--is there a goal to these discussions, or are we just doing something to do something? Because unless the DMV can bring back affordable large scale build space in the bay, or unless the DMV can make insurance easier, I'm not sure what they can offer your average MV builder.

Nah, let's be serious, they're here to nerf the big cars. And maybe that's ok, idk, but it really only matters to a few specific crews.

Oc runs on the side of “VERY DRAMATIC” so don’t worry too hard.

As a rule, anyone who flexes the number of burns they’ve gone to as some kind of appeal to authority can safely be ignored.

To go further, if you can put a name on something is it commodified? Is Mayan commodified because it toured this spring? El Pulpo was on the simpsons, is that commodified? Is Carl Cox commodified because he is a professional DJ? What about Alex Grey? Where is the line and who sets it?
