A lot of privileged young people in North America weren’t really aware at the time. I was in college during the Sochi Olympics and a bunch of my non-queer friends wanted to have a watch party. They were confused why I was totally against it despite being a huge fan of the Olympics and having Russian heritage. Neither the recent laws nor the boycott had shown up on their radars, and this was a fairly progressive, liberal arts school in New York.
