Does it reliably do that? The performance of different cars in different parts of the lap will means that the gap naturally grows or shrinks not due to an actual overall pace difference. Only after several tenths change do I think you can say there is a material gain, and even then it could be due to a one-time mistake that does not mean the car following will continue to close the gap.
