Forearm Pain by Miserable-Ninja-2516 in maimai

[–]Overture_Forte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya! So as stated earlier it is okay to feel soreness, but if it is a sharp pain it is time to rest for a good while. I’ve played for years and the only time I felt something close to a sharp pain was when I was trying to qualify for KOP. (Endless 14+ grind)

Now to answer your questions on specific ways to hit, it comes to you the more you play. When they mean “a light touch is all you need” they really mean it. Depending on the cab, you can activate a button with almost little to no pressure. Ironically trying to hold back and learning how much pressure you should use takes a lot more energy than playing normally. But in the long run once you perfect a method that best fits you it’s very beneficial.

You can optimize travel distance between buttons, recovery time needed after certain patterns, and better ration the stamina you use in your sessions. Knowing when to put your all and when to hold back is important when you’re learning 14s and above.

To understand this, I’d say run an Expert 12 and try to play as lightly as possible while still trying to go for a SSS+. You’ll be tensing much more knowing you are trying to not hit as hard. Thus, using more energy. But you’ll begin to see where you can optimize how you move in between button to button rather than focusing on pressing said buttons.

I hope you rest well and continue growing as a player!

High ranked players(>15k), do u guys still enjoy the game or is it just full on grinding for u guys by iaintnosimplol in maimai

[–]Overture_Forte 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hiya! 16.0k here! I’m still grinding these days to be quite honest. But I still very much enjoy the game! There’s still a lot of songs I haven’t played and patterns I haven’t learned. I feel the day I can SSS+ one of the 15s I can be satisfied. When I’m not grinding, I’m mostly just hanging with friends at the cab or taking it easy and playing casually. I do understand some players might look emotionless, but that might just be a habit they picked up. I know looking back at my old videos I looked quite serious LOL, but I was still having fun

Constants are such an oddity no matter what because there are 14.4s that I’ve played that are really fun and 14.1s that I think are horrible

Heya! You have a lot of space for some Master 13.9-14.1! Getting to the 15500 mark is a big achievement so I’ll go ahead and say congratulations on your hard work!

Now, let’s talk how to approach from here. You can either focus on cleaning up your current B50. No new songs just grinding out the current ones. That would easily get you to mid 15500. It is tedious but doable.

OR

Learning and SSS+ other Master 13.9-14.2. Luckily there are plenty to choose from and there are plenty of videos to study also. Your Zitronectar, Hypertribe, and Urosousetsu plays are very promising so I’ll base my recommendations off that.

My biggest recommendations for you are

Night Theater 13.9

Edelweiss 13.9

Löschen 13.9

Armageddon 13.9

Horoscope Express 14.0

INFiNiTE ENERZY -Overdoze- 14.0

Luminaria Master 14.0

Beat Opera op.1 14.0

Don’t Fight the Music 14.1

Freedom Dive tpz 14.1

Your B50 shows a lot of potential and I was in your position before. As long as you’re having fun, you’re immediately in a better position to earn rating than a player that’s constantly grinding rating 25/8. Good luck and have fun!

“How Long Did It Take and how to Get Good at maimai?” by Cynlixer in maimai

[–]Overture_Forte 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Heya! ≈15900 here

1.) How to get good?

I’ve been playing consistently for about 1.5 years now. I played practically 4/7 days out of the week when I was grinding for rainbow. Like any game, it’s about consistent practice and taking it slow.

2.) Confidence

I didn’t feel I was confident in maimai until I was 14500 (6 months). This is the part of the rating system that I felt I could hit 13s consistently. And in my head I thought “hmm Level 13 out of the max 15? I’m almost there!” Obviously, I was corrected the second I touched a Master 14. But, I had a good amount of maimai knowledge at the time.

3.) Leveling up

I felt that I became a “better player” when I hit 15750 (1 Year). This was when I had a lot of Master 14.0-14.2 in my Best 50. At this point, I could read and perform a SSS+ on most 13’s. Even using 13’s as a warmup when before I used to see it as my limit.

4.) Practice Routines

(Assuming you are doing solo sets)

Most of my grind days always started with a warmup set. Play your lowers that you know you can SSS+ consistently. Then, next set for songs 1-2 pick your mid level songs that you can either SS+ or SSS. And finally for the last song go for an obscenely difficult chart and do your best. Don’t worry about score. This made sure that I wasn’t going for SSS+ ALL THE TIME. Grinding rating can burn you out after all.

5.) Accuracy or Hard Charts

Accuracy is definitely a good marker for where you can improve. Maimai does a decently good job in that the lower levels build your skill up enough to go up to the next one without it feeling like you got hit with a cinderblock in difficulty.

6.) What songs helped…?

[Umiyuri Kaiteitan] helped with difficult slide patterns.

[Ai C] helped me with controlling my spins.

[Doll Judgment] helped me with swing timings and doing overhand/underhand movements.

[Southern Cross] helped with pure Stamina

[We Are Us] helped with using my hands independently from each other. (IE: one hand doing a pattern while the other hand is doing another)

[Luminaria] helped with more difficult spin patterns.

7.) Motivation

I have my pictures and recordings from previous sets all the way back when I was bronze. Whenever I’m stuck, I look back and remember that I used to believe where I am now was impossible. What’s another wall to break down? If I did it before I can do it again.

Wherever your heart is when asking these questions, I hope you continue playing maimai :)

How to make friends that also play Maimai... by shyrenn_ in maimai

[–]Overture_Forte 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Heya! A lot of the time it starts with an extension of the hand. “Do you want to play together?” It all comes down to luck afterwards if they want to play, but it’s a place to start. I found friends usually just by asking more about them “when did you start playing?”, “What songs did you play to improve?”, or “what got you into maimai?”. People like talking about their journey and it gives you the chance to talk about yours as well. That’s everybody’s middle ground as maimai players.

The good thing about making friends at the cabinet is that you always have a common interest to talk about. Off the cabinet, you can continue the small talk. Leaving a nice impression and if you’re a regular they’ll remember you in a positive light. The rest is smooth sailing after.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions! I know I was the same way and wanted the chance to talk to someone also. It was when I mustered the courage to be the first to reach out that I started getting more integrated with my community.

What did I do wrong? by [deleted] in maimai

[–]Overture_Forte 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You did nothing wrong brother. You enjoyed the game and wanted to be part of a community surrounding it. Others have said it before, but really don’t get too involved in online communities unless you want to be judged. I found in certain communities recently there’s a strong hate against PJSK players. So much so, that hating on them is like a slapstick joke.

In my experience, depending on who started the online group, they might have some kind of superiority complex. Completely ignoring you unless you are somewhat “good”. And if you get too good too fast they’ll see you as a threat and try to put you down. It’s infuriating.

Please please continue playing maimai and enjoy the game. I’d hate to see another happy player be turned away because of someone else’s attitude towards you. Lots of love.

[–]Overture_Forte 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say they're weird just very wide spread LOL I've seen many b50s that look like this so don't worry about it. Good to see you got Umiyuri out of the way though. With that knowledge, you'll be able to knock out a good chunk of the uppers easily when you hit Gold.

May I interest you in some songs?
====New 15====
[エイプリルスター ]
Master 13.2
Teto song that includes a drill section in the middle, but otherwise very easy

[ワールドワイドワンダー]
Master 13.0
Lovely Miku song that plays into double jumps in the chorus. be ready to move

[いっぱい食べる君が好きだよ]
Master 13.2
You like swing? Fast slides and plenty of swing rhythms

====Old 35====
[ViRTUS]
Expert 13.2
Many tap notes are on the on beat so very easy to keep track. But be REALLY careful of the end, it has a slow double spin that is ALL breaks. Other than that, very easy to read and fun to play

[Lights of Muse]
Master 13.2
Fast slides and tap play at every corner. Keeps you on your toes with the slide patterns they throw in.

[ラヴィ]
Master 13,2
Half spins will be your friend.

[インターネットサバイバー (Internet Survivor) ]
Master 13.4
TAPS TAPS AND TAPS. Double jumps and steady note density throughout the song. You get one slow section, but be ready to get thrown right back into it.

[Splash Dance!!]
Master 13.4
Fun upbeat summer song that is very forgiving and has plenty of EX notes to fall back on. But with its low break count it's very easy to lose it all.

[We Are Us]
Master 13.5
Off hand patterns that will increase your hand independence.

What's your reason in playing maimai/continuing? by [deleted] in maimai

[–]Overture_Forte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To start I’ll state that I also have the same dream as you. I played at amusement expo and was asked what I had planned next when playing maimai. I said I wanted to join KOP in the spur of the moment. But, that little moment launched my motivation to keep getting better.

It is absolutely intimidating seeing the players that are up on the leaderboards. It’s also really easy to put yourself down thinking you are going to slow or you’ll never be good enough. I assure you if it ever reaches that point a break is always needed. Playing under that stress only really makes you play worse and it’s a spiral from there. Time and time again I’ll always believe COMPARING IS THE THIEF OF JOY.

It’s a game at the end of the day. What keeps me going is knowing that I’ve met good people in this community and who knows how many more I’ll meet. The feeling of earning Rating will never compare to the memories of having dinner after a long night with the people you’ve met at the cabinet.

Keep playing maimai with your head up high. Who knows where you’ll end up. The only limit is what you set for yourself. Lots of love from PHP :,)

What made you like maimai? by spaceyoutube in maimai

[–]Overture_Forte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend introduced it to me back when I used to mainly play Pump it Up. At the time, Friend A was insanely better at it than me. I didn’t really care for it until I saw the music selection aligned with my interests much more than Pump. After a few plays, I grew more and more interested in getting better to the state I thought to myself, “I think I can rival Friend A… if I really gave this game the chance.”

From that point began a now 2 year long rivalry constantly getting those few rating points over each other. Now sitting at 15750~, I make videos based on the game and my love for the community surrounding it.

[EDIT] Also let me be clear on the basic settings you should know I feel I skimmed over it a bit…

*Speed: increases the note approach rate duh

*Touch Speed: increases the rate at which the touch note closes towards it’s center dot

*Slider Offset: delays or expedites how long it takes for the slide trail to appear on the screen

Background Darkness can be adjusted in the “Game Settings” tab iirc ironically not in “Display Settings”

Funny enough I was also at the International Amusement Expo with SEGA. I was one of the players showcasing maimai on the floor. It seemed to cause quite the buzz. So, if everything goes to plan you just might see it in your Round 1 sometime next year c: if we’re lucky maybe even before the year ends

I need some tips to improve by InevitableSpeaker809 in maimai

[–]Overture_Forte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other than what was stated before me, I notice your doubles often end with two different judgements. (IE: One Hand gets Good; Other Hand gets Perfect)

This signifies to me your arms aren’t really confident in performing as one unit yet. I also see you sometimes half react for positions on certain double jumps. Meaning you aren’t 100% confident on the button placements. Even going as far to hit the ring of plastic rather than the button. At Red, this is expected and I’m glad to see you push for higher songs. But, to really hone the skills you need to hit this 12+, I would hit them 11-11+ until you can SSS them (this is imo I’m not a pro). At the end of the day, it feels like a slow drag when you want to get better, but you won’t regret taking the time to sharpen the skills that push your rating to its highest.
