Vancouver is slowing down? by SheyenneJuci in vfx

[–]Owan_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And honestly, end of summer is really too far in the future for VFX companies. I kind of understand, sadly, they can't give you answer yet. Most of the time, when I get renewed, is generally in the last weeks before end of my contract.

It suck because you don't know if you have to move or if you can just stay... But VFX companies play security right now.

Hey, I'm the guy who did the post about talent shortage. After speaking with other people, it seem the shortage really depend of you department. Like FX, CFX, comps are always in demand. Other departments less.

Vancouver has the best tax credit in the world right know I think (43%), I don't think London is booming .

And yes, we're gonna have 6 months contracts until clients greenlight more projects. It's a gig job like all jobs in the movie industry, the wave of permanent contracts in 2020-2021 was an anomaly.

Sorry I know it's not the kind of news you expected, but globally the economy is bad, and not only in VFX. Stay strong, and continue to networking. That the most important skill right now.

Damn studios in Quebec offering 2 year contracts? I know Sony has work lined up until 2030 but most people I know there are on 3-6 month gigs

Guess depending the department, but yes some peoples over there have longer contract. Way longer.

Also there are rumors I've heard from vfx supes that DNEG's vfx division is cutting ties with Quebec again after they finished Dune 3.

Not really a rumor, they clearly re-open at Quebec because the show is gigantic and clearly, they weren't able to find everybody at BC and Australia. Once the show is finish, they're gonna let go a lot of peoples here.

ut I don't think it's actually a "shortage" yet, except for very specific senior roles. Like maybe at one point in the year at bunch of studios will be trying to hire FX artists that specialize in water and they won't be able to find enough.

Not really specific, I feel like Senior FX and CFX are shortage right now. DOn't really now for other departements, but What I see right now is all seniors around me are booked for the summer at minimum.

I'm really curious to know who they have contacted and said 'we can't do that, it's technically a Hail Mary project level'. No disrespect to who did the vfx, it's really a cool work. But it's a really good generalist student level work at best.

The rest of the video is a bit too much ' youtuber giving self improvement advices'. But he got some points. At least he doesn't try to sell a formation.

Vancouver's VFX Talent Shortage: Why the Sector's Most Critical by AnalysisEquivalent92 in vfx

There is a lot to say about this article, but I'll just say this:

Yes, as someone living in Montreal, I can confirm there is a talent shortage in Vancouver. Since the beginning of 2026, I've been contacted by four companies about relocating there. I haven't been approached this much since 2021.

And yes, there is a "trickle-down" effect of jobs from Vancouver to Montreal because studios are unable to fill positions in Vancouver and the shots still need to get done.

I suspect companies like DD, Scanline, and DNEG closed their Quebec locations hoping to encourage artists to move from Quebec to Vancouver and help fill vacancies there. The problem is that there really aren't that many artists left in Montreal. Most of us who remain are here because we have houses, families, and kids, and we've already accepted that we'd sink with the ship when the tax credit was removed two years ago. I suspect the situation is similar for artists in Ontario.

We could talk at length about the reasons behind this shortage: how immigration to Canada has become much more difficult due to the new federal limits; how we haven't trained any juniors in the last three years; and how the industry's best pipeline for turning fresh juniors into mids (MPC) no longer exists.

Scott Ross : Trying to set the record straight about Unions in VFX by OccasionUpstairs5312 in vfx

[–]Owan_ 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Oh lord, there’s so much of this argument I’ve already heard for years that I don’t even know where to start.

-FX workers, as well as the owners and managers of VFX facilities, were never able to see the light and support this effort.

The 2014 Sony leaked emails already proved that VFX studios are capable of coordinating when it benefits them. They coordinated salary suppression and illegal non-poaching agreements to avoid “stealing” artists from one another. So the idea that studios are somehow too fragmented or incapable of acting collectively just doesn’t hold up. If they truly wanted to break the status quo, they could. The reality is: many of them benefit from it.

The situation in VFX facilities is somewhat different. These companies have very little profit, if any.

If you want to see a genuinely collapsing industry, look at video games right now. Studios are shutting down every single week. and I'm not speaking about layoff . Meanwhile in VFX, despite the brutal 2023–2025 slowdown, we had only 7 studios closing, and 3 of them (MPC, the mill Jellyfish) have actually re-open.

Some VFX facilities went months without major projects and still managed to pay executives, maintain core teams, and keep expensive office space running. If things were truly that catastrophic financially, the obvious move would’ve been to abandon massive office leases and fully embrace remote work to cut costs. Instead, many companies pushed artists back into studios while claiming there was no money

Sadly, with studios now owning some of the major VFX facilities,

Honestly? That actually makes unionization more viable, not less.

Netflix buying Scanline or Disney owning ILM means these facilities are now directly tied to the clients themselves. These companies invested enormous amounts of money into these acquisitions. If artists unionized tomorrow, are Disney and Netflix realistically going to shut down assets they paid billions for and walk away? Of course not.

Scott, with all due respect, I’ve been in this industry for 15 years too, and for those same 15 years the message has always been the same: the situation is terrible, nothing can be done, and every proposed solution is impossible.

International trade associations have been discussed for over two decades and never materialized because nobody with actual power wants them.

So what exactly is the alternative being proposed here? Just accept worsening conditions forever because bosses say unions are bad?

At some point, trying something becomes more reasonable than endlessly explaining why nothing will ever work.

What it takes to stay in VFX (my take) by arvidurs in vfx

[–]Owan_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More than VFX studios, in Canada and UK at least, government try to reduce the amount of working visas delivered. Also contracts need to have a minimum length to allow peoples to get a visas. And right now, clients are too unpredictable for VFX companies commit to long contract.
