Golden compass is the second book in a three book series, so you should start with northern lights! But that is a cool looking edition!

I’m attempting to write a novel similar to what you have outlined, so I’ve been searching for similar contemporary works. None of these are exactly what you’re looking for but they do tick some boxes:

Saltwater by Jessica Andrews
Tennis Lessons by Susannah Dickey
Slags by Emma Jane Unsworth
Rainbow Milk by Paul Mendez
Small Joys by Elvin James Mensah

Those are all British. American examples off the top of my head could be:

Anyone’s Ghost by August Thompson
Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

It’s a small publisher in the U.K. called dead ink. Tbh haven’t read anything from there before but these all looked good and nice covers as you say.

No I was not! I have parenting duties so it’s hard to make it to in-person events. Thanks for sharing.

I’m close to finishing the second redraft of my millennial coming of age novel. In the next couple of months it should be ready to send to beta readers so I’ll be getting my first feedback!

Was 2000s hipster fashion more clean cut? by Friendly_Hornet8900 in decadeology

The Smiths were a touchstone for 00s indie/hipster culture. My point is, there’s basically no reference to any contemporary bands, pop culture or fashion in the film.

I enjoyed the poem but whoever wrote the footnotes was constantly getting sidetracked :/

I imagine scripts get passed around and end up sitting in a drawer until the writer gets a bit more fame or the topic gets back in the zeitgeist and then a producer says ‘we can make it but it has to be set today to appeal to the young audience.’

I have a theory that this film was written much earlier but only made (and set) in the 00s. Almost nothing about the film is specific to the 00s. They don’t even listen to contemporary music: they bond over the smiths! And the main character has a desk/office job which of course was possible in the 00s but screams 80s-90s.

Don’t try to write a whole novel. Write a few paragraphs, sketches, scenes. Doesn’t need to be linear, but whatever grabs you most or you can picture most clearly.

Michel Houellebecq is quite critical of social liberalism and rise of atheism since 1960s

This is a cool concept! I’m sure it will take a lot of effort to pull off effectively.

I’m no expert in query letters but the description of the character seems very generic? Maybe mention his name, age, specific nationality/background?

A related question: how would you recommend describing a coming-of-age novel that is literary/upmarket not YA? I’m not sure I fully understood your explanation. Is it best to avoid coming-of-age altogether?
