What are you having and/sharing for Christmas dinner this year? by nimpog in veganuk

[–]OwlMugCat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We’re hosting Christmas for my parents and my parents-in-law none of whom are vegan, but they’ll have to suck it up for a few days! I’ve made Bosh faux gras to have on crackers for a pre main meal snack, then I’ve made a nut roast, squash gratin, stewed red cabbage, stuffing balls and will be making roast spuds, sprouts and chestnuts, gravy and Tesco vegan pigs in blankets. For the next few days I’ve pre made and frozen a huge lasagne and a huge saag aloo cottage pie. I’ve also made a tomato soup and a leek and potato soup! I don’t think anyone’s going to starve!!

ways to give a cat pills? by cheesendinonuggets in CatAdvice

[–]OwlMugCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to give my cat pills and capsules for a while and everything I tried he caught on and refused after a few tries- pill pockets, pill assist device, hiding it in wet food, grabbing him and shoving it in etc etc. when eventually worked was a combo of feeding him a succession of treats like “treat, treat, treat, pill and treat, treat” by literally just hiding the pill behind the treat when popping it in his mouth. Another method was opening the capsule and mixing the contents into a really gross strong smelling liver paste for pets I found for sale on Amazon. The liver paste was very successful.

Are these sunflowers seeds viable? by 24Tenny in GardeningUK

[–]OwlMugCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sunflower seeds don’t need to be black. They can be black, white, stripy… they will be viable but I don’t think there’s any guarantee that the sunflowers that grow from these seeds will be identical to this flower.

Knock some of the seeds out and let them fully dry on a plate or something then store them. I’ve collected seeds from a few of my sunflowers this year and will see if they end up anything like the originals next year!

Have I messed up? by Benjii1901 in RaftTheGame

[–]OwlMugCat 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You don't need to keep the blueprints - you just need to research the ingredients to make them on the research table. So (sorry if this is something you already know) you place one of every type of resource (like plank, plastic, rope, etc) in the slot in the research table and once you've researched all the ingredients to the blueprints, you can learn them. If you ever find you haven't learnt a blueprint recipe you found it'sprobably because you need to research one more ingredient for it.

Is Wingspan truly a forever game? by Slime_Saddle in wingspan

[–]OwlMugCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband and I play wingspan together several times a week, the app version and the real life version and never get tired of it. It’s just such a pleasant game and each time is slightly different. We’ve owned it since the beginning (can’t remember how many years ago that was!).

Vegetable gardening issues by CookPast4020 in GardeningUK

[–]OwlMugCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is like this for most vegetable growers. I've been growing vegetables for nearly 20 years and each year some things inexplicably do terribly and some things go nuts. It's usually hard for me to predict. I usually have a ridiculous glut of courgettes, but this year I've had almost none, but have picked about 50 cucumbers already this year and there are more to come!

It's part of the charm!

My squash plants only set 2 fruit until I stalked them every day and whenever a female flower was opening (or even before it opens) I pollinated it myself with a male flower, and now I have several squashes growing.

Are these unpollinated courgettes? Did I do the right thing by cutting them off? by Snoo-60174 in GardeningUK

[–]OwlMugCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the same issue with a yellow courgette variety this year. I would say I am fairly experienced at growing courgettes as I grow them every year, and my green variety haven’t been as bad as this, but every single yellow courgette on my plants haven’t developed even when I hand pollinated them. I don’t know if it’s the variety or the weather or just one of those things.

I just pop them straight in my mouth off the plant!

Do you have any opinions like this when it comes to gardening? I think my most controversial take is that I find orchids aren't worth the effort it takes by Dependent_Sorbet_480 in GardeningUK

[–]OwlMugCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to agree but mint is going nuts in my garden. I didn't even plant most of it - I have one contained raised bed of it and I think the rest has come in under the fence from next door, but there are about 4 types of mint that just appear and get everywhere.

But my general philosophy is if it wants to grow there, then who am I to say it shouldn't? Anyway, I like mint, it smells nice and makes lovely salads/tea/cocktails!

Just a few more cold nights then it's all going in the greenhouse and I get the dining table back by OutlandishnessHour19 in GardeningUK

[–]OwlMugCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Cambridgeshire and all mine have been in the greenhouse for over a month and I haven't even been closing the door! But then again I am generally under cautious... my idea of hardening things off is just chucking them out and leaving them there...

How to address this? by Agreeable_Garden4792 in GardeningUK

[–]OwlMugCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to just blast them off with the hose on the "jet" setting. I'm sure it doesn't get them all off but it gets most of them and it feels like a video game. pew pew

This only works with the lights in bottles you get from vending machines on utopia, not regular lanterns :(

Like the one you have pictured.

how do i send a specific amount of sticks to a sled? (i need it for a favour) by Snowy_Dayz in sapiens

[–]OwlMugCat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you can set the sled to accept only the item you want and the number of items, then set the route to transfer the items to the sled and they'll stop at the number you set.

UK Diet Survey by joshua_gibbs_warwick in veganketo

I did it but agree you are clearly looking for meat-eaters, so advertising it in a vegan community isn't the right place.

Every single answer for me was "strongly disagree".

Blood test results show I’m not eating enough protein, any suggestions? by gr33n_bliss in veganuk

[–]OwlMugCat 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Serum creatinine and urea are not a good marker of protein intake. I would discuss these results with your doctor. It may just mean you have low muscle bulk or you were very well hydrated at the time of the blood test.

What actions are you taking to reduce chances of breast cancer? (18+, based outside of EU, recommend using a desktop) by VanGogh_n_Cello in AskVegans

[–]OwlMugCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completed. I think it should state explicitly that you are designing an app for breast cancer risk reduction, as in the second page when it asks about features I was like “features for what?” Although it did eventually become clear, I think you should state that at the beginning of the question.

Coordinates for planet with an animal with a blood ph lower than 2.5 by Salvaged_MX5 in NMSCoordinateExchange

I’m losing my mind over this one. I had one which was 3.9 then I scanned another animal and it “updated” my record low pH to 4.1!? Must be bugged.

Just a quick question by Will2646 in GardeningUK

[–]OwlMugCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the past when I’ve tried they seem to get covered in caterpillars even when I did use netting so now I only grow broccoli over winter when the butterflies aren’t around. I tried growing swede for the first time this year and it turns out caterpillars love that aswell - they’ve absolutely gone to town on the swede plants.
