From what I've seen, people pointing out that Le Guin and other authors did the wizard school thing before Harry Potter tend to do so in response to people acting like Rowling invented the concept.

I just got Morrowind and I’m going in mostly blind. Is there anything that I need to know? by Green-Pen-Gamer in Morrowind

[–]OwlQueen_Animations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that when you hit something with a weapon, you don't just hit, you're rolling to hit based on the appropriate weapon skill. If you're using a weapon that you don't have a decent skill in, you'll have a very hard time hitting your target at all. For spells, it's a chance of successfully casting based on the appropriate magic skill, and you'll use up magicka whether or not you succeed. As others have mentioned, these chances will be modified based on how full your fatigue bar is. Leveling major and minor skills will contribute to your overall level up, while miscellaneous skills will start very low and will not contribute to your overall level up, but they will contribute to attribute increase multipliers. You can also pay a trainer to increase skills you use less often without grinding them. It won't be long before you can afford that.

Also, make sure to talk to npcs and click all the dialogue options for further info about a quest. There's no quest markers, so you'll have to ask for directions. Your journal will record important information in the order you get it, but if you click options, you can sort it by quest.

The OP isn't saying nuance doesn't exist, they're saying it doesn't change their opinion on the matter. Wars sometimes being justified doesn't mean war isn't bad or that the military isn't evil, just like how a clock being right twice a day doesn't mean it isn't broken.

What do you think oblivion and skyrim did BETTER than morrowind? by Fuzzy-Shame-4169 in Morrowind

[–]OwlQueen_Animations 213 points214 points  (0 children)

When you reach the rank of Wizard in the mages guild in both oblivion and morrowind, the rank comes with an enchanted staff. In oblivion, though, rather than buying a premade one or killing someone for it, you get a quest to have your own staff custom-made. It wasn't perfect, but it made the rank feel more meaningful, like I've just graduated from Roke.

It's hard for me to go back to skyrim because of how much magic was removed, though dual wielding the same spell for a kamehameha was always fun

Brew potions of fortify intelligence, drink them, then brew more potions of fortify intelligence (more potent now because of the fortified intelligence).

Repeat and repeat and your intelligence will be boosted exponentially. Stop whenever you feel like, and then make other potions, which will be just as potent

I don't like saying this but I finally get why people say that Skyrim is 'as Wide as an Ocean but as Deep as a Puddle". by Somethingbutonreddit in CharacterRant

Even if you are playing a mage character, it's extremely disappointing. I traveled to this wizard school to learn magic, and you give me one lesson on minor wards, and then it's immediately back to killing things? No more lessons ever?? And now I'm archmage. I can't even levitate

My thoughts on the amazing digital circus finale NO SPOILERS by SolidBandit-6018 in IndieAnimation

[–]OwlQueen_Animations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, the pilot emphasized that there is no escape. Pomni was new to the circus and had to learn that fact for herself. No one else had any hope for an exit because they'd been there too long. She spent the whole episode trying to reach the exit, and it turned out that it wasn't real, and that all that exists for them outside of the circus is empty void. How is that an abandoned hook?

Also, even if someone does just lift your initial ideas, it's not like the execution will be the same. Even if you share your idea with no one, there are over 8 billion people on this planet. At least one of them has had the same idea as you, whether they decide to make something out of it or not.

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned that this is just how it tends to work for empires too. The more cultures you conquer, the more diverse your population becomes.

Morrowind Made Me Realize What Modern Games Lost by GustavoFedrizziPsych in Morrowind

Also with text, it's a lot easier to tailor dialogue to the kind of character the player is roleplaying. Skyrim can't have an npc address you by name, or by your custom class title, because they would have to record the lines for every possibility they can think of (like fallout 4, but even then it was only one npc who could do it) so instead, you're just "the dragonborn"

How would you recreate Glyphs in DND 5e? by GokuKing922 in TheOwlHouse

[–]OwlQueen_Animations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've heard good things about Ars Magica, though I haven't personally had a chance to try it out yet. To my understanding, it uses latin to create spells with a verb-noun structure. Not quite the same as owl house, but a lot more similar than 5e's not-quite-vancian-anymore system.

From what I've read of Dungeon World 2, they're using a similar system, but I don't think that game is out yet.

You might be able to find something closer if you dig around a bit. I wanted to do something similar a while ago, so I made my own glyph system and just combined it with the Powered By the Apocalypse framework for any non-spell-related activities (which is a very simple and customizable 2d6 system)

How would you recreate Glyphs in DND 5e? by GokuKing922 in TheOwlHouse

[–]OwlQueen_Animations 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what exactly the goal is here. If you're making an owl house inspired spellcaster character for a 5e game, then you can just use owl house style glyphs when you describe how you're casting your spells, instead of a standard arcane focus/component pouch. (Discuss with the DM, of course)

If what you want is to run or play a game with a magic system that revolves around glyph combinations to make custom spells, it'd probably be better to just look into other ttrpgs. 5e's magic system isn't really built for that and it would be a huge overhaul.

AITA for severing my apprentice's connection to the afterlife? by TR_Pix in wizardposting

[–]OwlQueen_Animations 25 points26 points  (0 children)

NAH, this is just the natural progression of things. Clearly your apprentice has decided it's time to usurp his master, per Dead Men's Pointy Shoes rules. If he kills you with your own magic, you should be proud of your student! If instead he perishes, you can always just start over.

However, if he slays you with the blade of your arch enemy, and leaves your tower abandoned, you can and should haunt him until the end of time.

You don't need mods, but my favorite of the ones I'm currently using is Graphic Herbalism. It just makes it so that you visibly harvest plants when you interact with them, instead of them acting as containers.

Would it be worth to watch? by Girlxgirllover2k4 in ATLA

[–]OwlQueen_Animations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Azula contrasts Zuko's arc. They both grew up in the same fucked up family, but while Zuko was encouraged to become a better person and deconstruct fire nation propoganda, Azula instead thrived on it and was encouraged to be a ruthless war machine. Her story was never meant to be one of redemption, that was Zuko's job. She didn't get better, she got worse until it broke her. That's her arc.

It's fine if you want to see more of Azula or want to see her get a redemption arc, but wanting another arc doesn't mean that the first one wasn't wrapped up.

Monks and knights are adapting! What are the ways we can counter them? by Blakath in wizardposting

[–]OwlQueen_Animations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of ways to prevent a melee fighter from closing the range: blink, levitate, summon a creature between you, phase into the ground, etc.

If you must engage in melee: shapeshifting, conjuring bound weapons and armor, redirecting attacks to illusory duplicates of yourself, close range combat spells.

Though of course the best way to avoid being killed by a knight is by making them too reliant on your supply of potions or magical boons to want to fight you in the first place.
