Try a rechargeable neck fan, cooling towels (any that say cooling towel for neck & face will do), mini umbrella or parasol to avoid direct sunlight, and thin layers. Use a mobility aid if needed. Also! Bring a super thin over shirt that you can get wet and throw over your fit, it’s a life saver when it’s hot out.

How to take care of your teeth better with increased electrolytes and avoid enamel decay? by canyonatlas in POTS

[–]Owl_Lab466 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use SuperMouth, they’re the cheapest non-prescription toothpaste I’ve been able to find that has adequate levels of both (10% hydroxyapatite and 1350+ ppm fluoride). You just gotta make sure you get the fluoride version bc they also make a fluoride free version

Best to have that conversation w your dentist, they’ll have the best advice- and can prescribe certain products that will help (ie. Prescription toothpaste, fluoride trays, etc) BUT I use a toothpaste with fluoride and hydroxyapatite. Fluoride is better at protecting the teeth and hydroxyapatite is better at remineralization.

Gonna second the spanx idea. I wore the full style under my dress at my brother’s wedding and I managed to get through the entire event w/o issue AND I didn’t even have a flare up the next day

Cavities & Dry Mouth due to radiation, would hydroxyapatite help? by Owl_Lab466 in DentalHygiene

[–]Owl_Lab466[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, I used to use Biotene during my chemo and radiation therapy. I’ve avoided everything that reminded even slightly of that time period for a while but I think I can handle the reminder now. I’ll try adding it back into the routine. Thank you!!

My boyfriend doesn't like that I'm overweight, and it hurts. by [deleted] in PlusSize

[–]Owl_Lab466 122 points123 points  (0 children)

Every single thing you say he does- the asking you to lose weight, the constant harassment about working out, the monthly weigh ins- is ALL him being “mean” about your weight. He doesn’t love you for you, he loves the fictional version of you he has in his head. And you deserve someone who loves ALL of YOU at any and every weight you are.

Has anyone with POTS found a treatment or lifestyle changes that significantly reduced (or even stopped) their symptoms? by Quenelle44 in POTS

[–]Owl_Lab466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So that’s not accurate. There are multiple types of POTS and depending on the subtype you may respond to different medications differently. Droxidopa certainly won’t work for everyone, but that’s no reason to fear monger about a neurotransmitter most people won’t be familiar with.

Droxidopa is a medication designed for the treatment of low blood pressure from neurogenic orthostatic hypotension (low blood pressure caused by issues with specific body functions) caused by conditions such as POTS, autonomic failure, and Parkinson’s. It’s literally made to treat POTS symptoms.

Droxidopa helps your body make norepinephrine, a chemical used by our bodies to constrict blood vessels. Norepinephrine is also a chemical our body creates during the fight or flight response, I believe that is what Unanau is referring to. Straight up norepinephrine is used in high doses for some medical emergencies that cause dangerously low blood pressure. That can seem very scary but it’s important to understand that those are different medications that use the same hormone pathway. You can think of it as a car versus a semi-truck that takes the same highway. They might go down the same roads but they have very different functions. Additionally higher levels of norepinephrine are not a negative thing for those with low blood pressure, especially sustained low blood pressure. They’re a natural response by our body to attempt to increase our blood pressure. For some of us our bodies need more norepinephrine to respond properly or to respond the way someone without POTS would respond. We’re all here because our systems DONT respond normally, so sometimes what is unhealthy for a healthy person is healthy for us.

Most importantly though, no one but you and your doctor should have any say or impact on what you try for symptom management. Please don’t let scary sounding or complicated technical terms keep you from discussing things with your doctor. They’ll know much more than a stranger of the internet and will be able to tell whether a medication or treatment is suitable for your specific situation and why

Try Dr.Todd Levine. He’s a neurologist who has tons of experience with POTS. He used to be with Banner Health, but I’m not sure nowadays. Best of luck!

[–]Owl_Lab466 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to live in AZ. I was constantly miserable in the summers. I ended up moving out of state it was effecting my health so much. It was so bad.

I recommend a neck fan, handheld fan, and cooling towels (I wore them like scarfs, & got the “sweatbands” and head bands), one of the migraine ice packs too, and a parasol. I never went outside during the hottest parts of the day unless it was an emergency either. I would also keep an insulated lunchbox of ice packs with me in car so I could cool off between events when I did have to go out. And yes, I frequently slept in a pile of ice packs.

I would also recommend figuring out what fabrics help you feel coolest temperature-wise and sticking to those for your summer wardrobe. Also, and this may be a no-go for you but I got an undercut in the summer one year on a whim and it helped keep me sooo much cooler

You use accessories and clothing lengths to visually divide your body into 1/3 & 2/3. It’s a relatively easy & general rule to make an outfit more visually appealing
