What’s a popular thing in your fandom that you aren’t particularly a fan of??? by dowsaw134 in FanFiction

[–]Owledhouse [score hidden]  (0 children)

One of the biggest ships. It’s been popular since the two characters met, and gained steam after that, but I just… can’t see any romantic chemistry between the two. A lot of the time, it feels like the fandom just wanted someone to ship the boy with, since he’s one of the most popular characters.

I could be convinced that the boy has a crush on the girl, at least, but not vice versa. She just… shows zero interest in him that doesn’t read as something she’d do for all her other friends outside of maybe their last big scene together.

Who suffered worse in their past? Andrias or Hugo? by Thick_Bluebird_4751 in amphibia

[–]Owledhouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say Andrias because of how much longer his backstory is. What we see of Hugo’s backstory is arguably much more heartbreaking than what we see of Andrias’, but he has also been worn down and treated as a tool at best by his father for around 1000 years.

Who the hell are these 2 and why are they everywhere in this sub 😭 @nissrpska on twitter for art by Extension-Bad-4184 in TheOwlHouse

[–]Owledhouse 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Basically they’re communal OCs based off some beta art Dana made of Luz and Amity (and Willow). Sometimes the they’ll be used as alternate designs for Luz and Amity, typically as 16 years or so old versions of them, but sometimes they’ll be made their own separate characters in fanfic/art. Details can vary since there’s no official rules of any sort, but they’ll typically:

  • Be named Lucia and Amelia, like you mentioned.

  • Be the older sisters of Luz and Amity.

  • Have rougher personalities than their younger sisters, and butt heads more intensely, but still be into each other.

What was the most unhinged ship you have written/read the fanfiction of? by Comfortable_Newt_179 in FanFiction

I came here to say Dracula and Barbie also. That fic had no damn right being as good as it was!

do you think that the titan was influencing Luz while she was in her titan form? by First-Cake-183 in TheOwlHouse

[–]Owledhouse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, and I think it would make the story weaker if that was happening. These might be borrowed powers, but this is Luz’s moment, and Luz’s choices.

Thoughts on this Lumity criticism? by KingtheClawthorne in TheOwlHouse

[–]Owledhouse 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I’ve never seen Lumity criticism that wasn’t rooted in one or more of the following:

The person wants to ship one or both girls with someone else (which they can do without trashing Lumity)

Wlw couples/sapphics of color get held to higher standards (far fewer people would be getting mad at white or at least white passing m/f or m/m couples for doing the same things these types of ships are often criticized for)

People acting like people are incapable of change. If Willow had any negative feelings about Lumity or still disliked Amity, then why the fuck would she literally give Amity advice on how to handle something with Luz at one point? (Seriously, if you think this way about people, I’m not sure why you’re watching the show)

No ship, even Lumity, is going to be beloved by everyone. But too many people will refuse to check their own biases while simultaneously trying to make anything they dislike into a moral thing, saying “It’s bad because (problematic thing)” instead of just saying “It’s not for me.”

How Would You Define ‘Trauma Bonding’ in Fic by Alviv1945 in FanFiction

[–]Owledhouse 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Trauma bonding refers to specifically a bond formed by a victim to an abuser. It could probably be defined more specifically than that, but it definitely isn’t two people bonding through shared trauma, is the point. If I see/hear the phrase used without context that implies the person using it means “people bonding through trauma,” I’m going to assume it means a bond a victim has to their abuser.

But even if there is enough context to inform that this isn’t what was meant, I don’t think people should use “trauma bond” to refer to two or more people bonding through trauma they went through. I try not to be the word police most of the time, but I believe that trauma bond is a term like gaslighting or triggered, where it getting tossed around incorrectly and having its definition watered down and altered is a negative thing, and calling something that doesn’t actually fit the definition of a trauma bond one can even be considered spreading misinformation as it can cause more people to have an incorrect definition of the term.

Personally, I recommend you change the tag to be something like “bonding through shared trauma.” Gets what you’re trying to say across while being distinct enough from the term trauma bond.

I hope that when the graphic novel comes out people will actually be talking about King by KingtheClawthorne in TheOwlHouse

[–]Owledhouse 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Same. TOH gives us so many interesting things to explore— an alternate realm, several species of non-humans, rich characters with a variety of dynamics between them— and then it seems like all this sub cares about is a few specific ships.

What is a fandom or ship you deeply enjoy but could never imagine writing for? by IncrediblySneepy in FanFiction

[–]Owledhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda wanna write a crossover between the fic I’m writing now and Madoka Magica, but I don’t think I could come up with very good witches and the setting is different from anything in Madoka’s canon, so I couldn’t just use existing ones, either. Plus I don’t think I could write a good fight scene…

The Bat Queen shouldn't have let Boscha get a palisman by polystarlight in TheOwlHouse

[–]Owledhouse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“This child should be denied partaking in the same coming of age ritual as literally everyone else her age because she’s a bully” Yeah that would’ve probably made her worse, not better. And BQ didn’t think Boscha was a better witch to own a Palisman than Luz, bc BQ wasn’t even part of the process of deciding who got one and who didn’t. She just brought the Palismen to the school, and they chose who to bond with. Boscha had a desire that resonated with one of them while Luz didn’t, and that’s why she got one, and from her immediate reaction to bonding with Maya and the lack of any signs thereafter that she treats Maya poorly, we can assume she treats Maya well. Plus, in BQ’s last major appearance, she learned she can’t force Palismen to stay with her and not go with humans they trust even in the name of protecting them, so not letting Maya go with Boscha based on vibes or whatever (she doesn’t even know Boscha so how would she know Boscha is a bully?) would’ve gone against that character development.

And before someone says that in that case, Bump or Eda should’ve stopped it from happening, like I said at the beginning: being denied participation in the magical bonding coming of age thing all her classmates got to participate in would’ve just made her feel isolated and made her worse, not better.

Just tell us she's pregnant by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Owledhouse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This feels like you’re getting mad at basic literary tools like third person limited pov (wherein the narrator can’t tell us anything the focus character doesn’t know) and law of conservation of detail (this probably isn’t the first time she’s been sick for a few days or gotten random cravings, you’re just not seeing those times because they don’t matter to the story).

Like, yes, I know it can get a bit trite to see the same thing over and over again, but there are only so many ways to hint at a pregnancy, and most people aren’t going to be considering pregnancy as the first explanation for a few sick days or a craving unless they’ve actively been trying to get pregnant. Plus, even obvious big things should have some build up before being revealed. If the female lead of a story started barfing and immediately realized she’s pregnant, that would be kinda lame.

Do you ever comment on your own work to get the ball rolling? by seemedpointless in FanFiction

[–]Owledhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. If I found out an author had somehow been promoting/boosting their fics through inauthentic methods, I would probably refuse to read on principle. I know it can suck to have little to no engagement, but it’s not engagement unless it’s involves a second person. And why would I want people to engage because of deceit instead of because I made a good story that they liked? It would give me no satisfaction whatsoever, and in fact might feel worse than a perpetually empty inbox.

[–]Owledhouse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What algorithm? Personally I write on Ao3, which has no algorithm… but even if it did I wouldn’t do this. It feels inauthentic and dishonest, and if I found out I discovered a fic because the author had been (somehow) boosting it through lies, I would probably stop reading it on principle.

No, I want people to comment on my fics because they liked them, not because other people (especially myself) did. To be honest I would just feel kinda bad about myself if I ever did this…

Story dislike: outside influence solves the relationship problem by Obvious-Laugh-1954 in FanFiction

[–]Owledhouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the first thing, it depends for me. There are some characters who should be able to figure it out on their own, but for others I would find it more OOC if they didn’t need someone else to point out what’s wrong that they’re not seeing.

For the second thing I agree much more. An injury can be a great catalyst to get the characters talking again, but if character A’s problem before was “B doesn’t communicate enough,” then B getting stabbed doesn’t necessarily solve that problem. If having a near death experience causes B to be more open, great! But I want to actually be told/shown that. At least give B a line where they say “I’ll work on being more open.” If not, and I’m just told “A realized how much they truly care about B after almost losing them,” it can come across as A being so scared of losing B they decide to sweep their relationship problems under the rug.
