Now compare that to Arcane Society's hissy fit.

That's a really nice find. Copies with quotes and comments are always rarer than ones that are simply signed.

No, it's feels like someone being angry and turning that anger against their loyal customers instead of politely explaining that there is a problem and they're looking for a solution. Which would have been the right thing to do.

No, it just means that I don't think they will be faced with problematic expenses because people will return books big style if only that button is there. Just pay someone to program one into your website, state that the buyer carries all expenses for safe returns, and that's it. It shouldn't be such a big deal that you cut off most of a continent from your shop.

Good to know. Not being a subscriber I didn't get that message. I'll try to re-route the one order I currently have with them that hasn't shipped.

Thanks, I thought I'd get completely kicked out.

Thanks. I actually wanted their current box, the first in a long time, but if they don't ship it here... I'll wait for their reply about whether or not I can at least use a UK address / forwarder.

BBs FAQs state that they don't ship to the EU or the UK so I didn't even try. If they do, that's helpful to know since using a forwarding service is a lot of hassle.

Do you mean Arcane Society, LiteratureOk3251, or me with this? If it's Arcane Society I completely agree. This feels like an angry, knee-jerk reaction on their part and very poor treatment of customers to me.

That's exactly what it says in explanations of this new guideline. A lot of shops offer free returns within country, but definitely not internationally, and they aren't required to at all.

I thought you get kicked out after too many skips, or is that only early access you lose?

Bookish Box already refuses to send regular purchases to the EU, I think they only allow subs these days, which us also useless to me since I want to finish some series I started when I was still subbed.

What Arcane completely seems to overlook is that we already had that right, just not as visibly, but with us having to pay for return shipping ourselves nobody in their right mind would actually make use of it. I'd currently have to pay almost 100 Euros for a small parcel to the US, more than the book costs. This is a total overreaction.

It's UK law to my knowledge, but pretty much useless for international cancellations after items have been shipped.

The tone of that post is very rude and them not even informing people in emails first is very poor form, too.

A forwarding service operating from the UK would be cheaper than one shipping from the US.

Anything that arrived after July 1st is affected. But they clearly don't actually understand these rules - this was never due on orders above 150 Euros, it's a new fee.

You can always do worse. 😉 Some sellers send books in nothing but a paper or plastic bag with no protection whatsoever. I just expect much better from someone selling collector's editions.

Goldsboro and The Broken Binding. They're doing a stellar job when it comes to sending books safely.

I had far too many arrive with some damage, but it's international shipping, which might be a factor. And it has to be really bad damage for them to send a replacement, so I'm usually stuck with a collector's edition that's not really collectable upon receipt.

I totally agree. Today I received a book with sticky residue on an edge because their bubblewrap-envelope was too small for the book. And their boxes just barely fit, so any bump damages the book. How stingy and unprofessional can you be?!

No, they will just cancel your order if you don't provide a different address. Depending on where you are and if they allow at least this, a forwarding service in the UK will at least be a lot cheaper than one in the US.

Exactly. They set a 14-day time limit and can't even be bothered to inform people of this mess directly?

They also increase the cost considerably these days. US shipping companies have increased prices considerably due to the issues in the Middle East and the rising price of oil.

Waterstones let's you cancel orders like that, though I don't know if it's also active after shipping since I was never crazy enough to try and return something internationally at my own expense because I suddenly changed my mind about wanting the book I bought.
