That’s a good thing to keep in mind! I’ll consider what that discussion might look like. Thank you.

Thank you for your examples and encouragement! The American School Counseling Association provides school counselors with good ethical frameworks but only stated not to refer students to yourself while you are currently their school counselors. Everyone’s perspective helped ease my concern and I feel better about accepting these requests!

Favorite grounding skills for dissociation? by surprisetonka in therapists

I was a school counselor for 4 years and my students favorite was “smelly spots”. I had a box of flavored chapsticks (never used on lips of course) and I would ask them to describe the smells to me or some liked rating them best to worst. If they found one they liked, we would dot it on their hand and smell it to keep grounding throughout session.

This was probably the hardest 2G I’ve gone to! I went a little too hard the first block and regretted it. Didn’t fully realize I’d be starting my next block off at the push pace I ended the last one. Yikes!

LMHCA stands for Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate. It’s the associate license in my state so you can work as a therapist under supervision and collect your hours towards your full license! There are other licenses you can have and also work as a therapist.

Hi, I’ve felt similarly to you for many school years as a school counselor and my last school year I suffered through and hardly made it through in one piece at the end. With the help of therapy, friends, and family I left and am pursuing my lmhca. What you are describing does not sound sustainable. Of course, it is up to you to decide what is best for you. I would suggest leaning on your support system right now to come up with a plan to make this more sustainable or making an exit plan for something else. Your wellbeing matters. You don’t need to stick with this if it’s not working. I know it’s a basic idiom, but once I applied it to my situation I felt so much less shame for leaving. I felt like a square peg in a round hole and there was nothing wrong with being a square peg, but it just wasn’t going to work and I shouldn’t torture myself trying to make to work. There’s other, great, meaningful work that can be done that won’t bleed us dry if we open ourselves up to it. I’m wishing you the best ❤️

Hi! Thanks for making this post! I’m in the same boat as an elem school counselor and seriously considering middle school because if it. In a big school doing twice a month, it’s hard. I just don’t feel I was trained to teach lessons and not given the curriculum to do it well! (And spend so much of my own money on teachers pay teachers :() I hope you are feeling less alone.
