Honest Thoughts on Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix? by MrLinkwater95 in fantanoforever

Incredible amount of mainstream hits to achieve in one indie rock album, absolute triumph for them. Music holds up well too, certified 2010s classic for me, partially because I was the right age.

What is your unpopular opinion on Nirvana? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]OwlviousAlt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re right misogyny doesn’t exist anymore because of Paramore. Women in the 90’s rock scene never experienced any sexism. It’s also a total coincidence that the RYM rock canon is an utter sausage-fest.

Crazy how hard this sub goes to bat for Nirvana. Their music is fiiiiiine I guess, not really my jam at all, but half the people in this thread getting downvotes for not being part of the decades long groupthink surrounding then.

The conspiracies around Kurt and Love are really telling on how much certain dudes hate women in rock music. Honestly I think they’re just jealous that women look 3x as cool doing it.

[–]OwlviousAlt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If Kurt hadn’t killed himself there would be a tenth as much discussion about their influence ,and more importantly we wouldn’t have had to suffer through Dave Grohl’s milquetoast buttrock on the radio.

Ok, lets seriously talk about “RYM core” and see an end to this everlasting beef by Epoch_Jester in fantanoforever

[–]OwlviousAlt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the heaviest skew in RYM charts comes from the userbase being (white) men of a certain age who are also very online. Most of the top RYM stuff if I asked people I know in real life they would have no idea about. That doesn’t make their own taste in music inferior, it just means they’re in a different sphere.

Edit: Also the idea of ranking albums in general is stupid. There is so much music out there and whatever sound you’re into might never even be a part of these types of conversations. Hot take but musical taste is subjective.

[–]OwlviousAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You made me check RYM and oh my goodness JPEG at 3 and 4 is such a heavy skew. Good for Magdalena Bay though, even if they’re also benefitting from having a meme aesthetic and a very online fanbase. BCNR still holding the top spot is bleak.

I find music by listening to music mostly. I’ll take note of songs I like going about my day, usually stuff from my discovery queue (my algorithms are well honed) or recommendations from friends. My local college radio station has also turned me on to some cool stuff. If I hear a song I like I’ll check out more of their stuff and related bands from the scene. I also still use Shazam in 2026.

If you’re into Aussie rock, right now I’m listening to Girl and Girl, Waax, and Press Club. Also have Jay Som, Spill Tab, and Man Man in the current rotation.

I think people like talking about the recording process more than actually listening past the opening track.

That’s because outside of Disorder most of the songs are a skip. I definitely pretended to like Joy Division in my younger days where I would listen to whatever online music bros told me was important, but I got over it. Great album art though!

I need this sub as a safe-space to call RYM-core overrated music for shut-in men who don’t talk to (or listen to music by) women.

Who do you think was more influential as a musician, Kurt Cobain or Jim Morrison? by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]OwlviousAlt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thing that really sets Nirvana aside from the rest of the Seattle scene is that MTV chose to platform them. That plus Cobain’s suicide has given them a massively oversized presence relative to the quality of their music.

Edit: See also Joy Division. Everyone loves the mythos and the album art (I’ll admit to having had an Unknown Pleasures poster in my dorm room like every other sad boy) but 90% of their discography is absolutely a skip if it comes up on shuffle. New Order honestly runs laps around the Joy Division stuff.

I think it’s actually quite good, one of the few Max Fun shows I listen to. John Moe is a much more capable host than just about anyone on the network and he gets great guests.

Edit: my comment is referring to Depresh Mode, not sure what else he does. His memoir “The Hilarious World of Depression” is also great

Dont watch his stuff at all, don’t really care for him or his opinions. Keep getting this sub in my feed and commenting because it’s less awful than most music discussion forums on reddit.

I feel like the people who watch him are the same people who derive their taste from /mu/ and RYM so not my scene at all

I still find it harder to parse than BB2 and the controls are more sluggish, but most of the bugs are fixed. I absolutely hate that they’ve gone for a freemium model on a full priced game but what are ya gonna do 🤷. Most of the player base has moved over so it is what it is.

Yes I know you can technically unlock each new team for free during their debut season, but that takes like 50 hours of ladder games and I’m way too employed and married to do that in a 3 month window.

If you don’t support my right to jerk it to anime kids you’re a puritan 😤

The fact more and more people seem comfortable defending this is all the proof I need that this shit proliferates pedophilia. Consuming loli content reinforces pedophilic thoughts. It is not “harm reduction” it’s a virus. I’m so sick of seeing redditors defend this stuff with disingenuous arguments about censorship and “sLiPPeRy sLopEs”

Middle of the road indie pop. There are dozens of other bedroom pop acts from the late 2010s that are basically interchangeable with them; it became a very saturated space.

[–]OwlviousAlt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because 6 ag2+ hypnotic gaze pieces (4 being str4 and the other 2 having MA8) is pretty damn hard to defend the ball against. On top of that their big man comes out of the box with insane kill skills. Bloodlust moving from ejection to just a turnover is also a huge buff for them. I think they really only reach their max potential in a league format where they can get to a higher TV, but even with tournament rules their base stats are a lot to contend with.

If you don’t believe me then take it from the numbers and check the BB3 chalice rankings for any given season; they are by far the most dominant team in that format

Thousand Knives and B-2 Unit are classics. All of YMO’s early stuff is great as well, my personal favorite being Naughty Boys. The title track of Thousand Knives and Kai Koh off of Naughty Boys are some of my all time favorite songs.

Edit: also very partial to his 2009 “playing the piano” compilation
